Placement Of Smoke And Fire Detectors
When placing alarms in your home, there are several things to keep in mind:
- Smoke and fire detectors should be installed on every level, outside of each sleeping area, and inside every bedroom of your residential home
- Ceiling mounted alarms should be in the center of the room if possible
- Never mount a detector near a heat source
- When installing an alarm high on the wall, it should not be placed more than 12 inches from the ceiling.
- Mount smoke detectors away from fans and air ducts that could blow smoke away from the detector
- To avoid nuisance alarms caused by oven heat, cooking smoke, or shower steam, avoid placing smoke detectors too close to a stove or oven and bathroom shower and at least 10 feet from appliances

New Illinois Law Requires Smoke Detectors With 10
By Kevin HaasGet our mobile app
ROCKFORD A new state law that goes into effect Jan. 1 requires all homes to have smoke detectors with a 10-year sealed battery life or a hardwired system.
The Rockford Fire Department and the Illinois Firefighters Association held a news conference on Wednesday to draw attention to the law and urge property owners to make the necessary changes now. The sealed-battery smoke alarms are considered more reliable than previous technology, where 9-volt batteries could run out of power or be removed by owners while cooking who then forget to replace them.
We do know that smoke alarms save lives, only when they work, said Matt Knott, Rockford Fire Department division chief. A working smoke alarm reduces the risk of dying in a home fire by up to 50%.
There were 97 residential fire deaths in Illinois in 2021, and nearly 70% of those deaths happened in homes without a working smoke alarm, according to Margaret Vaughn, Illinois Fire Safety Alliance and Illinois Fire Association government affairs director.
I know in Rockford theres a lot of older homes, so this is going to affect a lot of people, Vaughn said.
The Rockford Fire Department in partnership with Illinois-based First Alert will provided the alarms to all Rockford homes and assist with installation. Since 2020, 264 such alarms have been installed.
Tamperproof Design Prevents Battery From Being Removed
Thanks to a tamperproof design, the batteries in the First Alert 0827 Sealed Ionization Smoke Alarm cant be removed. This smoke detector complies with current 10-year legislation in states/cities where required, making it a great addition for any number of properties where sealed/tamperproof alarms are required.

Illinois Law Requires Sealed Battery Smoke Alarms Starting In 2023
A new law in effect on Jan. 1 means you might need to update your home smoke alarms.
Public Act 100-0200, passed in 2017, requires all Illinois homes to have a smoke alarm with a sealed 10-year battery by Jan. 1, 2023. According to the bill, homeowners without an updated alarm will get a 90-day notice to get a sealed battery model after those 90 days they can be fined up to $100.
If they’re not working, theyre not doing any good, said Vaughn. And it’s really not so much the burns that are killing people. It’s smoke inhalation and the content of the modern homes is all synthetic materials, a lot of plastics.
Thirty, 40 years ago, the fire department at least had time to get there, she said. Now, you need to get out of the house as quickly as possible.
Sealed batteries mean that mistakes like removing the battery while cooking and forgetting arent threats to the fire alarm working properly.
Fire alarms with sealed batteries cost about $5 to $10 more on average than the old removable battery alarms. Vaughn said that if your home was built after 1988, pre-existing legal requirements mean you probably already have the right kind of smoke alarm.
However, if youre in an older home and need the new units, there are some programs that can help with the cost. The Washington Fire Departments Be Alarmed! program is one of these services.

Most smoke and carbon monoxide detectors look the same, so you might think that they basically are the same. As long as theyve been certified by a testing organization, such as UL or Intertek Electrical Testing Labs , they should work just fine, right? Not exactly.
We need to test detectors because some fail at CO detection, and there are differences in how quickly different models respond to CO, says Bernie Deitrick, Consumer Reports test engineer for smoke and CO detectors. I have never tested a model that failed our fire and smoke tests, and it is reassuring to know that such critical devices actually work.
A detectors ability to sense carbon monoxide can mean the difference between life and death. According to the CDC, every year more than 400 Americans die from accidental CO poisoning, and about 50,000 Americans end up in the emergency department.
To determine the type you need, remove the detectors in your home from their mounts. If there are wires connected to them that run into the wall or ceiling, you need hardwired detectors. If there are no wires, you need battery-powered detectors.

Does Your Province Require 10
10-year smoke detectors are required in the following provinces:
- Winnipeg, Manitoba: As of 2016, 10-year sealed battery smoke detectors are required in rental properties that do not have hardwired alarms.
- Regina, Saskatchewan: Adopted in 2018 and in effect since January 1, 2020, 10-year sealed battery smoke detectors are required in rental properties that do not have hardwired alarms.
- Montreal, Quebec: Adopted June 26, 2019, all residences built before 1985 and which are not equipped with hardwired alarms must have 10-year sealed battery smoke alarms. The requirements were delayed until January 2021.
Even if your province does not currently require the use of 10-year smoke alarms in residential areas, there are several benefits to consider:
- There is no need to replace the batteries for the life of the detector. However, testing your smoke alarm regularly is recommended, no matter the type of alarm.
- Provides hassle free protection for a decade
- Helps eliminate late night, low battery chirps
- An end-of-life warning reminds you to replace the smoke detector
