What Is High Mileage For A Ford Escape Hybrid

Ford Escape Hybrid 2006 wouldn’t start…there is a special button you must press!

Any Ford Escape Hybrid with over 100,000 miles is a high mileage vehicle.

Although the Escape Hybrid is highly capable of covering another 100,000 miles and then some, it will likely have more unexpected maintenance issues once the odometer hits six digits.

The engine and hybrid powertrain should still be very reliable, but lots of other things might start giving you issues after 100,000 miles.

If youre looking at first or second-gen Escape Hybrids, keep in mind that these vehicles are at least 10 years old at this point.

Even if the one youre looking at has less than 100,000 miles, a lot of parts and systems can still start breaking simply due to age and degradation.

Batteries degrade over time, so you might be looking at a new hybrid battery replacement if youre considering a hybrid thats more than 10 years old, so be sure to factor that into your budget.

When buying a used Ford Escape Hybrid, youll want to consider the following:

  • Check that the car was properly serviced and the owner can provide evidence of this.
  • Be wary of abnormally low-priced Escapes it usually means there is damage or significant defects.
  • Have the car inspected by a mechanic who understands hybrids.
  • As a general rule, less previous owners is better. More owners usually means more wear-and-tear. A one-owner car thats been regularly serviced on time is less likely to have issues and nasty surprises.
  • The condition of the interior tells the story of how well the car was maintained and cared for.
  • How Does A Car Battery Work

The battery in your vehicle is there to provide a jolt of electrical energy to start the engine and to provide engine-off accessory power for a limited amount of time. Once the engine is running, the alternator takes over to power the accessories and charge the battery. Car batteries typically feature six connected cells in a lead-acid formulation, or up to 12 cells in a 24-volt system found in heavy trucks or other large vehicles.

Ford Escape Hybrid Battery Recovery Charging

The Ford Escape hybrid battery pack has 250 cells in two layers under the floor of the rear cargo area. Certain model year Ford Escapes have no way to recover from a wont start/no start situation do to the hybrid battery being over discharged. Our products provide a quick, low cost solution that allows the hybrid battery to be charged enough for the vehicle to be started and returned to service.

    INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS:USAGE INSTRUCTIONS:

The Prolong Charge does not cool the hybrid battery while charging it. It is very important to not over charge the battery. We only want to charge it enough for the vehicle to re-start on its own. The battery should be charged for approximately 2 to 2.5 hours only. DO NOT charge the battery for more than three hours. Longer than three hours could cause the battery to overheat.

The car harness can be left permanently connected to the battery in case this process ever needs to be repeated in the future.

If you are using a ProlongPro Charger to charge a Ford Escape Hybrid battery pack, never let it run for more than one hour.

Whats Involved In Maintaining Or Replacing A Battery

Batteries are not one size fits all. There are several things to consider:

    • Size:Typically based on your vehicles make, model and engine type, it is literally the footprint of the battery, along with placement of the battery terminals. Every battery has a slightly different terminal placement. Take care to make sure the new battery you are putting into your car, truck or SUV is the same size as the one you are replacing. Its got to be apples to apples. In other words, dont try to fit a pineapple into the space reserved for a canteloupe.
    • Age:Like a loaf of fresh-baked bread, batteries are best when fresh, within six months of manufacture. Most batteries, like the one in your current vehicle, will have a date code to tell you this information. When in doubt, call the battery maker to decipher the date code.
    • Cold Cranking Amps: Can this battery start your frozen SUV at 0 degrees Fahrenheit in the dead of winter when the oil is as thick as molasses? The higher the Cold Cranking Amps rating, the better the batterys starting power. The rating refers to the number of amps a 12-volt battery can deliver at 0 degrees F for 30 seconds, while maintaining at least 7.2 volts.
    • Reserve Capacity: In the case of an alternator failure, the Reserve Capacitywill give you an estimate of how long your cars battery will be able to run on battery power alone, without the help of the alternator.

What You Lose When You Disconnect The Battery

First, you lose the ECMs adaptive memory. Those are the settings your computer has learned over time to make your engine and transmission run well as it ages. If you disconnect the battery, it forgets all those settings and it has to relearn everything. That takes about 10 cold start drives and it can run poorly until it relearns.

Used 2006 Ford Escape Hybrid Consumer Reviews

I love this Ford. I think it has the right size motor and electric combination unlike some hybrids. I get at least 30 mpg. The computer must take some many factors into account so the car knows when to go electric and when gas. Brilliant. I love when I’m coasting or driving along on battery or when the motor shuts off in traffic or at a light. All cars should be hybrid. It just makes sense to get the most out of a gallon. Regenerative braking also just a common sense solution to wasted heat energy in normal brakes. Update a year later – Still love this car. It looks practically new and I rarely ever even wash it. I had to have the brakes done and front wheel bearings but it’s got 170K miles on it. Still going strong at 187K. Car is a peach .

The Ford Escape Hybrid SUV is an excellent alternative to the large, offensive SUV’s driven by urban soccer moms. The gas mileage is terrific and extends time between fill ups on the highway. The vehicle is extremely dependable and very low maintenance compared to any other SUV on the road. The 4 wheel drive is competent and provides excellent winter traction and stability. The CVT transmission is similar to a golf cart on steroids and provides a seamless, smooth acceleration and “shifting”. The cabin and ride are comfortable for long trips and space is plentiful for luggage and accessories. The best vehicle we have ever purchased.

Ford Escape Hybrid Vs Hyundai Tucson Hybrid

The Tucson Hybrid is a new model for 2022 from South Korean automakers Hyundai.

The company has some experience with building hybrids starting with the Sonata Hybrid in 2010 and so the Tucson Hybrid should be fairly capable of going toe-to-toe with the Escape Hybrid.

The Tucson Hybrid will likely last just as long as the Escape Hybrid at 200,000 300,000 miles or 13- 20 years.

    • RepairPal gave the Hyundai Tucson and Escape Hybrid the same rating of 4/5 stars for reliability.
    • The Tucson is cheaper to maintain with its average annual repair cost of $426 vs the Escapes $600.
    • Kelley Blue Books consumer rating index gave the Tucson Hybrid a reliability rating of 4.6/5 which is just a bit higher than the Escapes 4.5/5.
    • Edmunds consumer reviews gave the 2022 Tucson an overall rating of 4/5 which is significantly lower than the Escapes current rating of 5/5.
    • JD Power gave the 2022 Tucson an impressive 88/100 for Quality & Reliability while the 2020 Escape only got 72/100.

The Tucson has a much longer warranty when bought new. But Hyundai also had a large recall for many of its engines made in the last 10 years due to the possibility of severe engine failure. So theres no telling how well their other engines might hold up a couple of years from now.

Its pretty much a toss-up between these two hybrid SUVs.

The final decision will depend on which one you like the most and which brand you trust.

How Long Do The Tires Last

The Escape Hybrids tires should be able to last around 50,000 to 70,000 miles or roughly 3 to 5 years with normal use. They can wear out much sooner depending on road conditions, driving habits, climate and maintenance.

3 tips to get the most life from your tires:

    • Rotate your tires every 5,000 miles to ensure even wear.
    • Check your tire pressure every few weeks to make sure theyre at the correct tire pressure.
    • Check your wheel alignment every 6 months.

    Ford Escape Hybrid Battery Failing

    2005

PostsRe: 2006 Ford Escape Hybrid battery failinganneHi,Maybe someone here has experience with this – apparently my hybrid battery is failing . I have a new car ordered, won’t be here until October, so – I just need my car to get through about 3 months of minimal driving around town.As of now, I have the A/C set to “Max”, so the engine won’t shut off when I stop at lights, etc. First question: Does this mean the hybrid system will be bypassed completely? If not, is there a way to do that?Second question: If I shut off the “High Voltage Shut Off Switch”, is the car drivable, and will that help the problem?Thank you!

    Ford Escape Hybrid Preliminary Information

The Ford Escape Hybrid was offered for sale as a 2005 model. At the start of production for the 2006 model year the Mercury Mariner was added. At the start of production for the 2008 model year Mazda acquired this same vehicle as the Tribute. The hybrid systems used in all three of these vehicles are identical.

Because Ford Motor Company designed the all wheel drive model with a separate PTU unit, the FWD and AWD transaxles are the same. The hybrid battery pack is one of the most powerful in the industry rated at 330 volts and is located under the cargo cover.

The transaxle is known as the eCVT or the P310 and has a dedicated cooling system that is separate from the engine cooling system. The hybrid cooling system uses a 12 volt electric pump to circulate the coolant.

The P310 uses a Power Split Device similar to the Toyota Prius to allow the transaxle to operate in its various driving modes. Unlike the Prius the P310 does not use a chain to connect the drive motors to the final drive. Instead, it is gear to gear. A four cylinder gasoline powered engine along with two 3 phase AC electric traction motors power the vehicle. The engine uses stop/start technology at which time the electric starter motor will start the engine if needed. The engine is a 2.3 Liter Atkinson Cycle design and can maintain a low RPM range while meeting the necessary torque requirements.

Caution: even though the capacitors are discharged, the hybrid battery pack is always lethal!

The Electronic Throttle Body Is The Biggest Issue

An electronic throttle bo A small motor controls the

The gas pedal sends electronic signals to the PCM which then tells the throttle body how far to open

throttle plate opening and closing. In order to open and close properly, the computer must know when the throttle plate is fully closed. Some car makers have a self learning throttle body re-learn procedure. In those 2006 Ford Escape hybrids, all you have to do is turn the key to ON and leave it there for 30-secs. without starting the engine. But other car makers have a complicated Hokey-Pokey procedure that requires multiple brake pedal applications, along with several key on/off cycles. Still others require a factory scan tool relearn.

Stability control relearn is also a big problem

Stability control systems compare inputs from the steering angle sensor to the readings from the yaw sensor to figure out if your 2006 Ford Escape hybrid is in a skid situation. If you disconnect the battery without providing backup power first, whichever position the wheels are in when you disconnected the power will be the new straight-ahead when you connect the new battery. As soon as you drive the car, the computer will detect a steering angle sensor problem and set the check engine light. How do you reset the steering angle? Yup, an expensive scan tool.
