Honda Civic Hybrid Battery Life
I have a 2007 Honda Civic Hybrid with about 61k miles. Im wondering what kind of battery life people experience with the hybrids. Im 6 years into this and wonder how much longer I can expect before having to replace the batteries.
We have Civic Hybrids just like yours in our fleet. Many of them have already had the main battery packs replaced.
I dont mean to imply that it will soon happen to you
Im just giving you my observations
Honda hybrids seem to have more battery issues than Toyotas. But who can tell about your particular car?
You are probably at the age to expect the battery to start failing, might not but if you need a replacement you can buy reman online and they can have one of their installers come swap the battery for you depending on where you live.
There are a number of Prius taxis in our area and many have already gone 300,000 miles or more on the original batteries. The operators have already saved enough money to replace the $3000 or so batteries several times.
Not sure how long those batteries in other hybrids will last.
Neighbor of mine has an 07 or maybe its an 08 Civic Hybrid. He still has the original battery. Last I knew he had about 130k miles on his Civic.
I looked and Honda warranty on the web for batteries, 3 year 36k, is that right for the hybrid, and replacement cost is $2k?
Honda Civic Hybrid Battery Unreliable Report Says

Honda Australia will maintain the eight-year warranty on the Civic Hybrid battery, despite the warranty on the same battery being extended to nine and — in some models — 11 years.
A study by US publication Consumer Reports has found that Honda Civic Hybrid models may suffer from premature high-voltage battery pack failures.
The April issue of Consumer Reports says that earlier model Honda Civic Hybrids, particularly the 2009 model, dont measure up well against the competition. The report follows an extension of the Honda Civic Hybrid’s battery warranty in the US after large numbers needed to be replaced.
Over a 12-month survey period, nearly 20 per cent of 2009 Honda Civic Hybrid owners required a battery replacement, while the replacement rate on 2003, 2004 and 2010 Civic Hybrid models exceeded 10 per cent.
For owners outside of warranty, the cost of replacing the battery that feeds the Integrated Motor Assist system can range from $2,000 to $4,000 . That’s a substantial expense for a non-luxury vehicle thats less than a decade old.
Though Honda has not issued an official statement on the matter, a Technical Service Bulletin published in late 2012 extends the warranty in the US on the IMA drive battery.
Cars that were previously covered for 10 years or 100,000 miles are now covered for 11 years or 137,000 miles , while cars originally sold with an eight-year, 80,000-mile warranty are now covered for nine years or 96,000 miles .

How Does A Car Battery Work
The battery in your vehicle is there to provide a jolt of electrical energy to start the engine and to provide engine-off accessory power for a limited amount of time. Once the engine is running, the alternator takes over to power the accessories and charge the battery. Car batteries typically feature six connected cells in a lead-acid formulation, or up to 12 cells in a 24-volt system found in heavy trucks or other large vehicles.

Honda Civic Hybrid Battery: How Long Does A Honda Civic Hybrid Battery Last
The Honda Civic Hybrid was a highly recommended hybrid vehicle for many years from 2000-2009 until the batteries in some of the newer models started dying prematurely. Specifically, the 2009 and 2010 models were handicapped by an infamous short Honda Civic hybrid battery life.
A hybrid battery typically lasts six to ten years, and by law, the batteries are covered by an eight-year/100,000-mile warranty. Unfortunately, many drivers experienced battery failure after only three or four years.
Consumer Reports discovered a significant rate of battery failure in 2009-2010 models in February 2014, with over 30% of respondents stating that they had needed a battery replacement in the previous 12 months, and that majority were likely replaced under warranty.
Honda acknowledged issues with the 2006-2008 vehicles that could lead to battery deterioration and failure. In response to the problem, Honda released software upgrades to extend the Honda Civic hybrid battery life.
Honda’s high-tech batteries for these hybrids have been losing their ability to hold a charge years before the warranty expires, but Honda’s strategy is to wait until the batteries are fully dead before replacing them. So instead of replacing the old batteries, Honda, as mentioned, began deploying software updates that were supposed to extend the battery’s life and enhance performance, but environmentally concerned boards had started to express their concern.

How Do I Replace The Battery In My Honda
A confident do-it-your-selfer can replace a vehicle battery. Start by checking your vehicle owners manual for the batterys proper size and location. Find the positive and negative posts. The positive post will have a red plastic cover over it. Look for a + sign stamped onto the battery or printed on a nearby label. Loosen the negative terminal bolt and remove the cable. Be sure not to touch the positive post. Once you loosen the bolt, use a terminal puller to remove the cable. Repeat the sequence with the positive post.
Now remove the clamp or retaining system that keeps the battery in place. Carefully lift out the old battery. Look for any corrosion on the cables and remove it with a wire brush or terminal cleaning tool.
Drop in the new battery so that the positive post lines up with the red cable. Secure it with the battery retaining clamp that you removed earlier. If the battery has anti-corrosion washers, put them in place now and use a thin layer of anti-corrosion grease to prevent buildup. Tighten the positive cable and then do it all over again with the negative black cable.
Make sure the battery is secure and congratulations: youve replaced your cars battery!

Re: 2007 HCH 12 Volt Battery replacement urgent help needed!Just found and joined this forum today, so I’m not sure who the “usual suspects” are.yourRe: 2007 HCH 12 Volt Battery replacement urgent help needed!Re: 2007 HCH 12 Volt Battery replacement urgent help needed!Dream’RBear in mind that the 12V battery normally does not start the engine, but instead the HCH uses the IMA motor operating off the 158v main battery pack. The only time the 12V battery plays this role is under extreme cold or when the main pack is too low. However, the 12V battery provides power to the various electronic control systems and other accessories, lights, etc. So when the 12V battery fails, it causes these control systems to act up. As you said, if it’s as simple as replacing the 12V battery to solve these problems, you have lucked out. Many others on this site have had similar experiences so it’s a safe place to start. Some only manage to get 2-3 years life out of their OEM 12V batteries.Good luck,RogerRe: 2007 HCH 12 Volt Battery replacement urgent help needed!

Whats Involved In Maintaining Or Replacing A Battery
Batteries are not one size fits all. There are several things to consider:
- Size:Typically based on your vehicles make, model and engine type, it is literally the footprint of the battery, along with placement of the battery terminals. Every battery has a slightly different terminal placement. Take care to make sure the new battery you are putting into your car, truck or SUV is the same size as the one you are replacing. Its got to be apples to apples. In other words, dont try to fit a pineapple into the space reserved for a canteloupe.
- Age:Like a loaf of fresh-baked bread, batteries are best when fresh, within six months of manufacture. Most batteries, like the one in your current vehicle, will have a date code to tell you this information. When in doubt, call the battery maker to decipher the date code.
- Cold Cranking Amps: Can this battery start your frozen SUV at 0 degrees Fahrenheit in the dead of winter when the oil is as thick as molasses? The higher the Cold Cranking Amps rating, the better the batterys starting power. The rating refers to the number of amps a 12-volt battery can deliver at 0 degrees F for 30 seconds, while maintaining at least 7.2 volts.
- Reserve Capacity: In the case of an alternator failure, the Reserve Capacitywill give you an estimate of how long your cars battery will be able to run on battery power alone, without the help of the alternator.

My First Hybrid Strange Electrical Problem 2007 Honda Civic Hybrid
Just bought my first hybrid, a 2007 Honda Civic Hybrid. Regrets already.
Need help diagnosing this behavior. I’m about 80% sure the “starting” battery is dead, but hybrid…
Day 1
Day 2
Day 3
So either my car battery is really dead or the main “hybrid” battery under the seat is dead. Or possibly something else? Have no voltmeter and limited time, so I wanted to get some answers from SE first before committing.
EDIT I should also note the power steering and brakes fail when the dash is flashing like a Christmas tree. Even while it’s being driven.
Cause Of Honda Civic Hybrid Battery Failures
Undercharging has been the major cause of premature battery failure in Honda Civic hybrid IMA batteries. The problem, according to Honda, is caused by frequent stop-and-go city driving with the A/C on, especially during hot weather. The hybrid battery may become discharged as a result of this type of driving. This can lead to battery degeneration and failure over time.
The hybrid battery must be kept at 50 to 60% of its full charge for best service life. This requires frequent driving in order to keep the battery charged . If the car is left unattended for more than a month , the battery may deplete to the point where it never fully recovers and eventually fails.
A battery that has been totally discharged and not recharged within 90 days may not accept a normal charge and fail prematurely. The battery might potentially be harmed by extreme heat. Curing paint in a bake oven that reaches 150 degrees F may damage a car’s battery if it has been damaged and repainted. When working on a Honda Civic Hybrid, body shops are advised not to allow the oven temperature to become too high.
