Arlo Pro 4 Xl And Ultra 2 Xl Security Cameras Have Motion

365 DAY Battery ! Arlo Pro 4 XL Wireless Spotlight Security Camera Review

Arlo has released two new outdoor security cameras, the Arlo Pro 4 XL and the Arlo Ultra 2 XL. The wireless cameras have 365 days of battery life and can be fully charged in 2.9 hours. While the Pro 4 XL has a 4K camera with a 160° viewing angle, the Ultra 2 XL has a 2K camera with a 180° viewing angle.

Both devices can deliver HDR video with 12 x zoom and an auto-tracking feature. To help you in the dark, the gadgets have a built-in 6,500 K spotlight, producing 42 Lux at 1 m . An integrated siren can be used as an extra intruder deterrent, automatically activating by motion detection. Color Night Vision enables you to capture vivid details in low lighting, and a built-in speaker and microphone enable two-way conversations through the device.

The security cameras support various smart home systems, including Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant plus, the 2XL works with Apple HomeKit. The cameras weigh 490 g , measure 120 x 64.2 x 86 mm and can be mounted on a wall. You can now buy the Arlo Pro 4 XL in Europe for £239.99 or 269.99 . The Arlo Ultra 2 XL is also available in Europe for £340 or 369.99 .

Arlo Pro 4 Vs Arlo Ultra Video Quality Battery Life And Bandwidth

The most obvious difference between two of the best wireless home security cameras on the mark is in visual quality. The Arlo Ultra can shoot footage in 4K, while the Arlo Pro 4 hits its visual limit at 2K. Using an 8MP image sensor, the Arlo Ultra will capture far more pixels per frame, making it far easier to spot identifiable characteristics in footage of a possible intruder. That being said, many cameras make do with 1080p footage, and by comparison, the Arlo Pro 4’s 2K footage is far clearer than the industry average.

So, is 4K security footage necessary, or worth the extra cost? It very well could be, but there are significant caveats to consider first.

Don’t buy the Arlo Ultra for 4K footage unless your internet upload speed is up to the task.

Before you buy either of these cameras, check your current internet plan’s upload speed. Arlo estimates that both cameras upload between 2-4Mbps. The more Arlo cameras you buy, the more data your router will have to funnel into the cloud in real time. The same principle applies in terms of which video resolution you choose.

The last thing you want is to buy an Arlo Ultra bundle, only to realize that your router can only handle them in 1080p mode. Generally speaking, the Arlo Pro 4’s max resolution will tax your network less than its more powerful sibling.

Arlo Pro 4 Spotlight Review: Should You Buy One

For that reason, I cant recommend the Arlo Pro 4, even if I wanted to. Security camera manufacturers are going to have to wake up at some point to the fact that users are going to take umbrage at having to pay to use something theyve already bought to the fullest of its abilities.

Thats a shame, because otherwise, the Arlo Pro 4 is a competent security camera, with some excellent features, including animal detection and colour night vision. Image quality is superb as well.

As Google has proved with its new Nest Cam, and Eufy with its entirely free-to-run SoloCam E40, you can produce a security camera that doesnt lock every useful feature behind a monthly subscription. That begs the question as to why youd buy the Arlo Pro 4 instead.

How Long Do Arlo Camera Batteries Last

Battery life expectations:

  • Arlo wire-free camera batteries last approximately 36 months with average use.
  • Arlo Go camera batteries last approximately 23 months with average use, depending on mobile signal strength.
  • Arlo Q, Q Plus, and Baby cameras do not use batteries.

Average use assumes that you are using Optimized or Best Battery Life video settings and that your cameras record for approximately five minutes per day.

Increasing the length or quantity of video recordings in your camera’s modes and rules decreases your battery life.

The following environmental factors also reduce battery life:

  • Temperatures below 32°F
  • Low-light environments that require infrared sensors to work harder
  • Low LTE signal strength
  • Weak connection to the base station caused by distance, WiFi interference, or solid obstructions between camera and base station

    Amazon Alexa And Google Assistant

Arlo Pro 4’s functionality with and is essentially identical. The most convenient feature is viewing a live video feed on a smart display like an Echo Show or . We especially like this for spying on the cat while working or checking on the kids in the yard.

If you don’t have a smart display, you can also watch a livestream on your TV using a Fire TV or Chromecast device, which are compatible with Alexa and Google smart speakers, respectively. Having a larger screen is a big bonus, and you can check your cameras between episodes to see if the kids are asleep.

You can arm and disarm the camera using voice commands or routines. This is great for when you’re out of the house. Here’s a routine you might try: set the camera to arm motion recording when you lock the front door and leave for the day.

Arlo Pro 3 Vs Nest Cam Iq Outdoor

Video-wise, these cameras are pretty much on the same page. The Nest camera has 4k sensors with 1080p HD display, while the Arlo has 2k sensors with 2560p HD display, and both have HDR, 12 times zoom and fields of view of 130 degrees. They also share infrared night vision, two-way audio, cloud storage, and integrations with Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant, although the Nest Cam IQ Outdoor also works with Philips Hue lightbulbs.

However, the Nest Cam IQ Outdoor lacks an integration with Apple Watch, so thats one feather in the Arlo Pro 3s cap. On the flip side, youll have to pay for person detection with Arlo, while it comes with the Nest camera in addition to familiar face alerts. Another major difference is power source, as the Nest Cam IQ Outdoor plugs in, requiring an indoor power outlet. Ironically, the Nest Cam is actually more durable than the Arlo Pro 3, working in temperatures from -40 to 113 degrees Fahrenheit in comparison to 14 to 113 with the Arlo Pro 3. Of course, its much more expensive by about $150, so overall, Id go with the Arlo Pro 3 unless you really want to avoid paying for person detection. However, keep in mind that Nests cloud storage options are pretty expensive and theres no local storage available. Arlos free cloud storage is also non-existent, although the paid options are much more reasonable.

    Motion And Audio Alerts

Long Term Review: 8 Months With Arlo Pro 4 Cameras | My Biggest Issues

The Arlo Pro 4 was almost too effective when we first tested motion alerts. We picked a window frequented by our test cata deluge of notifications prompted us to disable notifications until we found a way to reduce motion sensitivity.

The motion sensor in the camera works independently of the video settings. We adjusted it in the Device Utilities menu under Motion Detection Test. After lowering the sensitivity , the notifications were less frequent, tracking only large movements.

Arlo can also send audio alerts when the camera detects sound, but you’ll likely never use the audio-only setting. The default arming mode uses motion and audio detection, and there’s not much reason to use them separately.

You can also log into the My Arlo portal in a browser to control your cameras and change settings. It has the same features as the Arlo mobile app but with a slightly different layout for computer screens. It’s definitely worth using if you want to set up activity zones.

    Arlo Pro 4 Battery Life

The battery life on the Arlo Pro 4 is quite good for a wireless camera but decreased by around 50% over a couple of weeks. We suspect that part of this decrease was an unreliable Wi-Fi router that dropped connection multiple times a day, which likely made the Arlo Pro 4 use more power trying to reconnect.

Arlo offers three power management options in the video settings menu:

    • Best Video uses more power to provide better video quality.
    • Optimized tries to balance power consumption and video quality.
    • Best Battery Life uses less power at the expense of video quality.

We don’t think it’s possible to get a full six months out of the battery like it says on the boxeven under more stable conditions. Our first two weeks of testing used the Optimized setting and after that we put it in Standby. After about two months, we had to charge the battery.

Your rechargeable battery will likely be partially charged before setup, but we recommend topping off the charge during and after setup before mounting your Arlo Pro 4.

Keep in mind that the unit doesn’t come with a USB power supply for the charging cable, so you need to provide your own to charge the battery. We first attempted to charge it via a laptop USB port, but the computer popped up a message saying there wasn’t enough power for the camera.

    No Keys: Push To Start

The Arlo Pro 4 is like a fully upgraded electric car: It makes you feel fancy and it’s practical. The camera itself has a nice heft to it and sticks solidly to the magnetic base. It boasts 2k resolution, a 160-degree field of view, full-color night vision , two-way talk, a built-in siren and motion-sensitive spotlight — the works.

Nest’s most recent outdoor camera, by comparison, has 1080p resolution, a 130-degree field of view, standard night vision, two-way talk and neither a siren nor a spotlight. Sure, it costs $20 less at $180, but ends up more expensive over time if you factor in subscription fees. In short, the Arlo Pro 4 really packs in the features.

Needless to say, the Pro 4 also easily beats out budget options — like the excellent-for-the-price $35 Wyze Cam v3 — which often don’t come with lights, sirens, 2k resolution or wide-angle fields of view.

The one thing Wyze has that few other companies offer is 14 days of free cloud storage. Which brings me to my one criticism of Arlo: the lack of subscription-free features.

It’s no secret that smart security camera developers want to hook you with a monthly subscription. Free trials abound here — Wyze and Google Nest both offer a free month, while Arlo offers a generous three months. The intent is always to get you to end up paying over time.

In addition, the Pro 4 doesn’t have an SD card slot, which means any local storage will require a separate device… like the Arlo SmartHub .

    Arlo Pro 4 Review: Features

The Arlo Pro 4 has many of the same features weve come to expect from even the lower end of smart home cameras. You can set up activity zones with eight points of articulation rather than just a square. With up to 5 zones per camera, its easy to capture activity from only the areas you want covered. The camera also comes with 4 default modesArmed, Disarmed, Schedule, and Geofencing. Though I had initial trouble with Geofencing, which Arlo confirmed to be a known issue, a subsequent firmware update appeared to fix it, and the feature worked quite well.

The Arlo Pro 4 offers cloud-based detection and recording based on what type of object its seeing, allowing you to only record people, vehicles, or animals, as well as simply recording any detected motion. While you can get this feature with this level of granularity with other cameras, what you cant get from other companies is package detection: a feature that specifically notifies you when the camera detects the telltale sign of that particular brown color that defines the cardboard packages that so many of us now have coming on a weekly, if not daily, basis.

    Arlo Smart Home Compatibility

Arlo Pro 4 Wireless Spotlight Security Camera

Arlo has some of the best smart home compatibility among security cameras, which extends to the Arlo Pro security cameras. Out of the box, you can expect Arlo Pro 4 to work with four smart home platforms: Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant, IFTTT, and Samsung SmartThings. By linking your Arlo account to one of these platforms, you can make your camera work alongside other smart devices.

If you buy the optional base station, Arlo Pro 4 gains smart home compatibility with Apple HomeKit.

    What it looks like

Info current as of post date.* Requires optional base station.

Arlos latest in the Pro series is a streamlined camera that just about anyone can install and connect to tons of smart home devices like lights or smart displays. And it can also boast an entirely wire-free setupin an upgrade to the Arlo Pro 3, it doesnt require a base station either. Were all for reducing bulky and pricey equipment requirements.

Arlo Pro : Design And Setup

As we’ve said, design-wise and in almost every other way, this is an Arlo Pro 3. It comes in black and white, has a sleek, small, bullet shape, and works with either the Arlo magnetic wall mount or with the adjustable indoor/outdoor screw mount .

Let there be light: Arlo Pro 3 Floodlight review

Its removable battery is charged in-situ with a magnetic charging cable, which you can leave hooked up for continuous power . It also works with a solar panel charger if there’s no outlet nearby.

Or you can pop out the battery and charge it with an Arlo charging station , where you can be always-charging spare batteries so you’ll never be without surveillance.

It’s annoying that you can’t charge the battery without taking the camera down, unless you shell out for extra kit. And all those accessories really add up quick. But you also have lots of options.

The Arlo Pro 4 comes with a magnetic mount and an indoor charging cable.

Setup is different from the Arlo Pro 3, however, as you don’t need to mess with a hub or base station. Just charge up the camera, open the Arlo app, follow the steps to add a camera, and hop onto your Wi-Fi network .

The app also walks you through where you can place the camera, by showing you signal strength and a live feed. Based on this, the furthest out from our house we could put it was about 30-feet, any further and signal dropped dramatically.

Compared to the 100 or so feet we could get with the Arlo Pro 3 that’s a big difference.

    Arlo Pro 4 Installation

You dont need any previous experience with Arlo or home security cameras to set up this device. Still, youll definitely find it easier if youve used similar products before.

    Arlo Pro 4 installation steps:

    • Plug in the Arlo Pro 4 to charge.
    • Follow the app instructions to complete setup and connect to your home Wi-Fi.
    • Mount the camera if desired.

If this procedure sounds daunting to you, get a tech-savvy friend or acquaintance to help.

Again, this camera has an estimated six-month battery life, so you shouldnt have to change the batteries very often.
