Team Analysis On Back Bay Battery Simulation

IntroductionThe Back Bay Battery Inc. Simulation gave us the task to manage their innovationstrategy to ensure that the company achieves its performance goals, while continuing itsR& amp D investments for future growth opportunities . The main dilemma of the task was to manage the budget between BBBs coretechnology, the AGM battery, responsible for 80% of the revenue, whilst also investing intothe potentially disruptive technology, the Supercapacitors, currently responsible for 20% ofour revenue . Throughout the report, we used various information sources, including the incomestatement and sales variances, to help formulate the most realistic and robust R& amp Dinvestment strategy. Meanwhile, our forecasting was also based on information about currentindustry developments using the News Tab to understand the path of the industry in the nextyears . Combined, we used these to create thesales forecast, and from this the investment strategy for the upcoming years. The investmentstrategy consisted of a 10-year strategy, with the goal of maximizing profit . This paper will demonstrate our learning curve of the project byanalyzing the three investment strategies used within the simulation and discussing thetheoretical concepts of ambidexterity, resource allocation and disruptive and radicalinnovation. Moreover, we will give an insight about three recommendations concerning pricesetting, how to deal with data uncertainty and continuity in strategy decisions.

Please be explicit about the assumptions that formed the basis for the initial strategy. How didthe strategy change over time , and what were thereasons for those changes?

Years 1 and 2

The simulation start with two years history. Back Bay Battery suffer operating loss forboth years due to big losses in super-capacitor business. It appears that BBB priced the SCway below cost. BBB is enjoy healthy margins of around 30% in AGM battery, with most of thesales coming from the automobile sector.

Year 3

News indicated that the Automobile sector will grow, which is the sector generating biggestrevenue for BBB. Meanwhile, the SC batteries are very far behind markets expectations. Notunderstanding how the needs of super-capacitor will grow, I made the decision to invest70% in AGM and 30% in SC. Based on performance reports, BBBs AGM battery couldimprove on energy density, self-discharge rate and unit cost. Thus, investments are made in thesecategories. For SC, energy density and self-discharge are the areas that need significantlyimprovement before customers will adopt the product. Taking a gamble, I invest money toimprove self-discharge in SC instead of energy density because the estimate project investmentsappears to be more efficient in self discharge technology.

Team analysis on Back Bay Battery Simulation Game

Introduction

We played a Back Bay Battery simulation game where we were amanager of a consumer electronics manufacturer. The problem in thisbusiness was getting a good balance between R& D spending forthe existing NiMH market and the new Ultracapacitor market. Weplayed multiple rounds of this game, which ended in decent profits.Different strategies are used to not get fired and make thebusiness successful. Every strategy has a different theoreticalbackground, which are compared, analyzed and discussed. For R& Dof Back Bay Battery we have conducted three different strategies tomaximize our cumulative profit. We took over as manager from 2012till 2020. At that moment there was already a large amount invested in self-discharge for the NiMHbatteries.Strategy types

The first key lesson we have learned from playing the BBB gamewas that managers should be very carefully with their salesforecasts. Past revenue rates do not give guarantees for futurerevenues. If its done wrong the calculated budget for R& D mightbe too high for the upcoming revenue. A way to avoid this is tobase the R& D spendings on the revenue of the past year insteadof the upcoming year.

The second key lesson we have learned is that in highlycompetitive markets like the Battery market, cost leadership is aneffective strategy. Investments in process innovations aretherefore highly effective.

The Rationale For The Strategy

Foremost, I maintained my price at $10, but I invested in the process of improvement to cut the unit cost. As a result, I managed a steady product performance throughout the five years. During the third year, I reduced the prices of supercapacitors from $20 to $15 per unit to boost sales and maintain competitiveness in the market. Even after one of the automakers requested Back Bay to focus on its specific needs for an upcoming SUV line, I still offered the high-power density battery at $10 to prevent intrusion of the market by Asian competitors. The appealing recharge time and competitive price have been critical factors for improved sales, despite the companys limited R& D resources.

In this paper we explore the mechanisms that allow securities analysts to value companies in contexts of Knightian uncertainty, that is, in the face of information that is unclear, subject to unforeseeable contingencies or to multiple interpretations. We address this question with a grounded-theory analysis of the reports written on Amazon.com by securities analyst Henry Blodget and rival analysts during the years 1998-2000. Our core finding is that analysts& #x27 reports are structured by internally consistent associations that include categorizations, key metrics and analogies. We refer to these representations as calculative frames, and propose that analysts function as frame-makers – that is, as specialized intermediaries that help investors value uncertain stocks. We conclude by considering the implications of frame-making for the rise of new industry categories, analysts& #x27 accuracy, and the regulatory debate on analysts& #x27 independence.

The Importance Of The Behavioral Management Theory

Welcome To Strategic Innovation Simulation: Back Bay Battery You

Welcome to Strategic Innovation Simulation: Back Bay Battery

You are the president of Back Bay Battery, Inc., a $240 million revenue division of a $40 billion consumer electronics manufacturer. Back Bay Battery produces two types of batteries, the absorbed glass mat battery and a new supercapacitor battery. The AGM is a heavy, lead-acid battery that is easy to handle, withstanding vibration and extreme conditions well. AGM batteries represent 80% of the company’s revenue and have been a mainstay of the business. The newer supercapacitor batteries make up the remaining 20% of revenue.

Back Bay Battery sells its batteries to businesses. There are three primary markets:

Automobiles. Several characteristics of AGM batteries make them attractive for high end vehicles. They can be placed somewhere in the interior of the vehicle or the trunk since they are sealed. The rising popularity of start-stop engine technology means an increased demand from automakers because AGM technology is well suited to the increased power demands and frequent cycling. They are also beginning to be used for braking energy recovery . A generator attached to the drivetrain of a popular European SUV captures the energy released during braking and uses it to power the many electrical subsystems on the vehicle. Both of these applications improved fuel efficiency.
