How Do Battery Backup Sump Pumps Work

Sump pumps are an essential part of any home that is at risk of flooding. They are installed in a pit in the basement and work by pumping water out of the home and into a drain or sewage system. Most primary sump pumps are connected to AC power, in other words, powered by electricity, but during a power outage, a battery backup sump pump can keep your home dry.

Battery backup sump pumps are connected to battery power and will start automatically if the power goes out. The battery will provide power to the pump for a limited time, depending on the size of the battery. Once the battery is depleted, the pump will stop working.

For this reason, it is important to have a backup battery on hand in case of a power outage or if the primary sump pump fails. A battery backup sump pump can help to protect your home from water damage in the event of an outage.

How Does A Battery Backup Sump Pump Work

A sump pump is a device that alleviates basement flooding by collecting water in a sump basin and pushing it out of the house. It comes in either a pedestal or submersible version, the former being easier to service and the latter more easily hidden.

A battery backup sump pump does the job of a sump pump when there is no power to operate the primary one. It is not used on its own. It is responsible for draining when there is no power available.

The battery backup sump pump is an entirely separate pump from the primary one. It automatically starts working if the primary pump fails for any reason. There are many events where this feature comes in handy. This includes:

  • Power Shortage – In a flooding event, this is a likely scenario.
  • Main Pump Breaks Down – If the main sump pump fails, but the power is still on, the backup can help out until you are able to get a replacement.
  • Main Pump Gets Overwhelmed – This is a case where they are both working together because the main pump cannot keep up with heavy flooding.

The cost to have a professional install a battery backup sump pump in the Kansas City area is between $600 $4,000. This price depends on:

  • The type of pump installed
  • The volume the pump can handle
  • How complex or complicated of a job

Do You Really Need Two Sump Pumps

Chances are that you already have a traditional sump pump in place if you live in an area that floods very often. Water-powered sump pumps are usually considered an extra pump to help clear unwanted water. Therefore, you might be asking yourself if you actually need two pumps or not.

The short answer is yes. Traditional pumps are powered by electricity, but this means they wont work at all if your power goes out. Imagine that you have a long-lasting storm and no way of removing the water until the power comes back!

With a water-powered sump pump, you have a backup system that can work with no other power source except water pressure. This can offer maximum peace of mind that no matter what happens, youll be able to displace any unwanted water as quickly as possible.

Like we said, you probably want the very best sump pump to help protect your home. Out of all these reviews, then, what is our pick for best overall pump? Its the Liberty Pumps SJ10 SumpJet Water Powered Back-Up Pump.

This pump can help displace up to 1,185 gallons per hour , which is perfect when you need to get rid of water really fast. And the 1:2 efficiency ratio guarantees a quality product, as does the 3-year warranty provided by the manufacturer.

Really, our primary criticism of this pump is that you cant use an existing lid and you need a pit diameter of at least 18 inches. Together, these factors add up to a sump pump that is not as user-friendly as others on this list.

With sump pumps, you dont always have a lot of money to throw at new equipment. This is especially true if you are dealing with some of the other damages caused by your home flood. So, if youre shopping for the best water-powered sump pumps for the money, we recommend the Zoeller 503-0005 Homeguard Water Powered Backup Pump.

Despite the low cost, this sump pump can displace around 1,140 gallons per hour. And at 4 pounds, it is very easy to pick this pump up and move it wherever you have a water problem.

What keeps this from being our top pick, then? The in-pit design makes this hard to install. And on top of that, you are likely to run into occasional problems like leaks and faulty shut-offs even if you had the pump professionally installed.

Sump Pump Battery Boxes And Chargers

Sump Pump battery chargers operate as both chargers and maintainers, keeping the battery fully charged and in optimal condition over a long period of time.

If the sump pump doesn’t have a reliable battery charger/maintainer, consider buying a dedicated one and connecting it to the battery.

Note: battery-powered sump pumps and similar emergency equipment MUST work reliably in the case of emergencies – if they don’t operate reliably, what’s the point of having them? Thus, any work on the sump pumps and their electric and electronic systems should be done by certified personnel or at least by someone who actually knows what to do. Seriously!

The preferred battery types of sump pump batteries are dual-purpose or deep-cycle AGM SLA batteries or Gel-CellSLA batteries.

Note: Car batteries are designed as starting/cranking batteries, being able to provide short bursts of power for shorter periods of time and thus are not the best choice for, what is easily possible, deep cycle applications. However, if your sump pump battery is dead for who knows what reason, hook your charged car battery and let it work – one deep discharge cycle will not harm starting battery, but the cycle use may shorten its operating life significantly.

Thus, when choosing a sump pump battery, go for a reliable deep cycle AGM battery from a reputable brand.

Most sump pump battery boxes accept Group or BCI Group .

Their sizes are:

– Group 27 batteries : 12.0625 x 6.8125 x 8.875 inches, 30.6 x 17.3 x 22.5 cm,

How We Test Our Picks

The best generators for sump pumps are tested in a variety of ways, including:

  • Plugging the best generator directly into a sump pump to measure whether or not it powers on and actually works. We also look at the amperage output from each generator
  • Run time systems are tested to make sure they can run at least 4 hours before running turning off.
  • Size generators are also tested for overall size and weight so that its easy to carry them around your home.
  • Customer service best generator for sump pump companies are also best when it comes to customer service issues that may arise.
  • Price and value best generators for sump pumps should be affordable but not cheap, either when it comes to paying for them or when it comes to their ongoing maintenance

Burcam Emergency Water Powered Sump Pump

Many of the sump pumps on our list are designed to work on their own. But what if you need another sump pump to finish the job in an efficient manner? In that case, your best choice is the BURCAM 300400 Emergency Water Powered Sump Pump.

With a maximum pump rate of 1,200 GPH, this pump is no slouch on its own. But it is at its best when you team it with an existing electrical sump pump. Thats because this pump requires no battery or other power source and effectively creates redundancy for your basement or crawlspace.

Its a little heavier than most pumps, clocking in at 8.5 pounds. Then again, this pump isnt designed to be moved around after you set it up.

Whats not to love? Many users report it does not pump water very efficiently. Furthermore, components like the float valve dont last very long, especially given the price.

The Sump Pump Battery Backup Advantage

Savvy homeowners know the importance of battery backup systems for sump pumps. Primary sump pumps rely on electricity. Unfortunately, when the power goes out basement flooding can occur within a few hours. There is not much time before water damage takes its toll. Battery backup systems provide sump pumps with the electricity that is needed to power a backup sump pump during a power outage.

Battery backup systems use heavy-duty batteries that act as a power source in the event of an electrical outage. Should an electrical outage occur, the battery backup system will automatically power a backup sump pump. There is always a connection between the backup battery and the sump system, which means the battery will remain charged until it is needed.

Sump pump battery backup systems are often called two-stage systems. When your homes power is on, the primary sump pump will use electricity for power. However, if a power outage occurs, the battery backup system will kick in and provide the energy needed to power the backup sump pump.

Top 5 Combination Sump Pumps Reviews

Wayne WSSM30V Reviews

Strobe made the following comment on February 2018. This Install Was Surprisingly Simple And Took Me No Time At All.

I have never done plumbing work or any sump stuff before. I bought a 5-foot section of 1.5-inch PVC, pvc cement primer, and pvc cement at the local hardware store. I used a jigsaw and cut the pipe so it would come up to the 90 degree bend over my pit. I primed and cemented the pipe into the Y fitting and let it sit for 30 minutes to set. Cut my old pump out, dropped this one in, and used a 4-inch long rubber fitting with screw clamps on each side of it to join to my existing pipe. Sure beats the nearly $1500 quote I received to have a contractor put in a battery backup combo system. And it was not difficult to install since it is pre-assembled!

Oval had this to say on November 2016. WAYNE Was One Of The Most Highly Regarded Brands Online.

SMA writes on April 2018. Recommend 100%

Purchased the WSSM30V last year, but did not feel the need to write a review until we lost power for 2+ days recently. The pump worked perfectly, our basement stayed dry .

When power is out, there is an audible alarm. Not quiet, but not blaring either. You can hear it from one floor away. During operation, the pump is very quiet.

How To Choose Backup Sump Pump Capacity

Liberty Pumps 441 Battery Back

The pumping capacity of your backup sump pump should ideally match the primary sump pump.

There are two main ratings for sump pumps that determine capacity, and that is the horsepower and GPH. The average sized home will have a 1/3-hp sump pump motor. If your property has a high water table, or is at the bottom of a hill, you may want to get a stronger motor such as 1/2-hp.

Another rating used for sump pump capacity is the amount of water it can pump within an hour. The GPH rating stands for gallons per hour, and it will usually be in the 1000 to 3000 GPH range.

Manufacturers will also tell you the GPH based on vertical life. If the pump is 2000-GPM based on 0′ , then it will probably be around 1000-GPM with 10′ of vertical rise.

Calculating required sump pump capacity can be a complicated topic because you want to factor in the total discharge pipe length, the vertical rise and horizontal length. But you also want to consider the size of your sump pit , how quickly the pit fills up with water during storm events, and other considerations.

Basically, you don’t want a pump that is too weak and won’t keep up with the water filling up your sump pit. But you also don’t want a pump that is too powerful because it will cause the pump to short cycle which means constantly turning on and off. Short cycling can cause premature pump failure.

Sump Pump Battery Backup

If you are a homeowner, then you know that there are certain things you have to do in order to keep your home in good condition. One of those things is installing a sump pump. A sump pump is an essential part of any home, and it helps protect your property from water damage.

Raybend Primary Sump Pump Backup Power System:

Raybends new release is a good choice for those unwilling to pay the price of the pump Sentry. With pure sine wave power, it can power up large pumps at a much lower cost. The power supply must be as clean as the power you receive from the outlet, ensuring your pump runs smoothly and quietly. A power outage will automatically switch the pump over to battery power. It is recommended to use a 75 Ah AGM deep cycle battery.

A Raybend generator delivers a pure sinusoidal voltage of 120 VAC to power your main sump pump reliably. When AC power is restored, a powerful 10 Amp built-in charger automatically recharges the battery.

As long as there arent back to back power interruptions in your area, the only disadvantage should be the lack of battery. Furthermore, it does not provide any customer support, but its not a big deal.

An output of 1500 watts is enough for two primary sump pumps to run simultaneously using a maximum of 12.5 amps collectively. With this sump pump, youll get a fully tested, electrically grounded system that conforms to CE safety standards.
