What Is A Power Strip
Power strips are devices that can be useful when it comes to feeding power to devices. Most strips have a built-in LED light system that indicates when the strip or individual sockets are functioning properly. Equipped with numerous wall outlets, power strips have energy-saving features that can power off an outlet momentarily if a device goes on stand-by mode. These strips can also include surge protectors built within them, decreasing the likelihood of a power surge causing damage.
Power strips are an excellent choice for anyone looking to power multiple devices safely. The energy-saving features and dual functionality of these strips allow people to work at a fast rate and never have to worry about issues with power not working.

An uninterruptible power supply, or UPS , are, at the most basic level, a big battery that kicks in when your power goes out. They range from really small units to whole-house units. Were going to focus on testing smaller, desktop models that give you enough power for a desktop PC, and leave the whole-house models to other experts.
With all of that out of the way, if you feel you need a UPS, just buy the APC Back-UPS Pro 1500VA. Its got a big enough battery so you can save your work and safely shut down without having to panic.
Best For Networking And Other Devices: Cyberpower Cp800avr
While a UPS can be useful for keeping a computer alive and working, for those of us working on laptops, keeping the internet up is just as important. The Cyperpower CP800AVR is designed for keeping your networking gear up and running.
There are four plugs with battery backup and an additional four plugs with surge protection. The outlets are nicely spaced out so you can plug devices in with larger plugs . Automatic voltage regulation can fix minor power fluctuations without fully kicking in the battery power. That’s better for your power consumption and overall battery health. You can stand the UPS up or lay it down, depending on what’s best for you.

Cyberpower Cp1500avrlcd Intelligent Lcd Battery Backup
The CyberPower CP1500AVRLCD is widely regarded as one of the best UPS systems in its class. Its towards the more expensive end of UPS power supply products, but that buys you added protection, useful features, an attractive design, and more. Theres loads to talk about with this product, but well start with the stats. It has a 1500AV/900W battery, which means its amongst the most powerful batteries on this list. That means its perfect for use with modern, high-performance computer systems that require a lot of power to run. If youre running a PC gaming set up or a high-spec mac, you should splash out on a more powerful UPS system like this one. CyberPower doesnt state exactly how long it will power your computer setup after the power turns off, but you can expect around 30-40 minutes of runtime. That gives you ample time to save your documents and safely turn everything off, whilst you wait for the power to turn back on.
In terms of power outlets, this backup power supply is pretty stacked. It has a total of 12 sockets 6 are surge protected and connected to the battery backup, the other 6 are just surge protected. So, youve got 6 sockets for computer systems and 6 for other connected devices that wont be affected by a sudden power outage. But theyre not the only outlets. Its also got USB and serial ports, phone/network connectors, and coax inputs. That means this product is the one-stop battery backup for your whole office set up. You can plug everything in!

Short-term power
This CyberPower EC850LCD is a UPS like the others on this list, but it has a trick up its sleeve. Three outlets shut down their output when the CyberPower unit detects the device thats plugged in is in standby or vampire mode. That can end up saving you real money.
So, the EC850LCD is a pretty modest unit, but it will allow you to save your work and safely shut down.

Surge Protector Vs Power Strip
Not all power strips are surge protectors. A power strip may or may not have surge protection. A surge protector, however, functions like a power strip with multiple outlets while also protecting your electronics from sudden power loss due to voltage spikes. This is particularly helpful with lightning strikes or surges from a power company issue.
While there is surge protection built into some power strips, their primary attributes are equally distributing voltage across a multiplicity of electronic devices and their lower average cost.
Surge protectors, on the other hand, come in at a bit pricier cost but are specifically designed to protect against power surges. another. When it comes to using a surge protector versus a power strip for your PC and devices, you shouldnt have to choose. To safeguard your equipment, you should make sure any power strip you buy is also a surge protector.
Apc Ups Bx1500m Battery Backup & Surge Protector
The APC BX1500M was another strong contender to be our Best Choice product. Its just as stacked with features as the CyberPower and Tripp-Lite UPS systems weve looked at and, in our opinion, its one of the best looking. First, though, we should mention this companys credentials. APC have been making electronic peripherals, products for data centers, and UPS systems for years and theyre one of the biggest names in the business.
In terms of aesthetic, this battery backup & surge protector is one of the best backup batteries around. Its a small matte black tower, with an LCD screen and an attractive APC logo carved into the side. It has cooling vents around the body, which keep it from overheating and add to the sleek look of the product. Like the Cyberpower CP1500AVRLCD, it will look right at home next to your modern computer setup. But, youre probably not buying a UPS system for the way it looks, so lets get into the features.
In terms of inputs, the APC BX1500M has 5 battery backup sockets and 5 surge-protected sockets. Plus, its got a USB and serial port, 2 ethernet surge-protected ports, and 2 coaxial surge-protected ports. Its not quite as well-equipped as the Cyberpower CP1500AVRLCD, but its still one of the best in its class.

Apc Ups Battery Back Up
Weve already looked at one of APCs entry level products, but its only fair that we take a look at their higher end offerings.
Design
One of the better looking UPSs on the market, APC also opted for the tower design. But unlike CyberPowers model, the APC UPS Battery Back Up can operate on its side if necessary, thanks to the cooling vent located on the top of the unit. Its got a well illuminated display that gives you easy access to some key information about the operation of the UPS. Youll know the current battery charge level, output voltage, and rate of battery drain. Although this UPS still has the ruggedized plastic exterior, APC made sure to give it an executive feel that would fit right at home in any professional or high-end environment.
Functionality
Of all the UPSs weve reviewed today, this one is by far the largest. Its got a huge battery that was able to power our modem for a little under 24 hours. But this isnt designed for such a simple application, its designed so that you can plug in whatever you need and have power on the go. In our testing we found that it could run both a desktop computer and a modem for around 6 hours, but of course this will change depending on how powerful your hardware is.

Surge Protector Vs Ups

While a surge protector functions like a power strip, uninterruptible power sources work like temporary back up power. UPS devices work independently, providing power when the main power supply fails. A UPS protects users as well as devices during disrupted power. UPS devices deliver power almost instantly when the main power ceases, allowing for very little if any interruption in power at all. The power supplied tends to come from batteries, supercapacitors or flywheels.
The solution is not long-term, but it does allow you some time to find an alternate power source without losing your work or risking damage to your machine. Most UPS devices allow just three to five minutes of battery backup power while others may keep your devices running for a bit longer. Give some thought to your needs prior to choosing which UPS is right for your system.

When To Use A Ups
Uninterruptible power sources give peace of mind that your work and your devices are protected in the event of a brownout or total loss of power. Many UPS devices allow multiple outlets for connecting your entire system or several important appliances or accessories. Consider using a UPS all the time for your desktop computer to ensure you never suffer data loss. Understanding that a UPS will not provide a long-term power supply to finish working is important to your satisfaction level as an end user. In the event of power loss, use the UPS to give yourself enough time to save your work and find an alternate power source.
What Is A Surge Protector
Surge protectors, like power strips, can come in the form of a wall mount with USB ports extending outwards for easy access to plug in devices. They also, however, can come in different forms that plug into the wall containing parts specifically designed to block a power surge.
Additionally, these come with a spike suppressor, surge diverter, and a surge protection device . Some also come with a transient voltage surge suppressor for max defense against a power surge. Surge protectors are meant to defend against a spike in voltage coming from a power line and are made to absorb power to keep it from going out or malfunctioning.
Instead of plugging a surge protector directly into a wall socket, you can also mount your surge protection device to your circuit breaker panel. Or, choose a single-outlet surge protector for one device or appliance. You may also find surge protectors designed specifically for telephone lines, cable and more.

How Do I Maintain A Battery Backup
It is not an advisable financial behaviour when you have to change your battery backup often due to lack of maintenance. Hence, the need for proper maintenance of the battery backup is just like any other gadget you have. Highlighted below is a list of some of the things you can do to maintain your battery backup.
Violation Of Epp Policy
The equipment protection policy of battery backup stipulates that the manufacture will pay for the repair of any device that is damaged due to the connection of such device to the battery backup.
In addition, the manufacturer will also provide another battery backup for you when it is damaged due to an energy issue.
However, be reminded that it is not recommended that you plug your battery backup in a power strip. Hence, if you plug the battery backup into a power strip, you might lose what you stand to gain from the EPP policy.

Determining Your Ups Needs
Most of us have two main scenarios to plan for: keep the network up, and prevent our AC-powered computers from abruptly shutting down. These involve very different choices in hardware and configuration.
One common element between both, however: having enough outlets spaced correctly to plug all your items directly in. Most UPSes feature both battery-backed outlets and surge-protected outlets that arent wired into the battery. You need to study quantity and position, as it is strongly recommended you dont plug a power strip or other extensions into either kind of UPS outlet, as it increases the risk of electrical fire.
That can be particularly tricky if you have large wall wart style AC adapters or wider-than-average AC plugs.

Best Compact: Apc 600va Ups Be600m1 Battery Backup
If you’re working at home, in a dorm, or someplace where space is at a premium, a compact UPS is just what the doctor ordered. Our reviewer Jeremy noted the UPS “switches to battery backup so fast that I never lost my internet connection.” That’s an important consideration, especially if you’re working from home.
This is designed to sit on a table, which gives you easy access to your plugs. Some of the plugs are pretty close together, while others are spaced apart. You’ll need to put some thought into plug placement with this unit. There’s also a USB-A port for charging your mobile devices. That’s a nice addition, but in 2021, we’d like to see a USB-C port here.
Outlets: 5 battery and surge protected, 2 surge-protected | Battery backup power: 600VA/330W | Sine Wave: Simulated
For smaller UPS devices like this one, this is my preferred form factor. The outlets are all easy to reach, and the unit can fit nicely on an end table or bookshelf if you arent using it at your computer desk. The battery compartment cover slides off easily, and the battery itself also pops out without issue. Spacing of the outlets is a little less satisfying, as some of them are quite close together, and others are quite far apart. While it’s a plus that there’s a USB port for charging devices, it’s sluggish, and some devices may not charge at all due to consuming power at a faster rate than the port can supply.
