Why Won’t My Car Battery Hold A Charge

I BOUGHT A CHEAP Honda Civic HYBRID With A DEAD BATTERY

From the easiest-to-fix to the most complicated, here are the most common reasons your vehicles battery cant hold a charge:

  • Corrosion around the battery terminals: Your local Midas technician will visually inspect these during every Midas Touch Courtesy Check1 and can clean away corrosion safely.
  • Somethings draining your battery: Check every light switch, door , and lighted compartment in your vehicle. You may be leaving a door slightly ajar, or a faulty latch could appear closed but is allowing your lights to stay on overnight.
  • End of battery life: Every car battery has a finite charging capacity, testable with a voltmeter machine.
  • A bad alternator: The alternator is responsible for recharging your battery as you drive, so its one of the first mechanical problems to check.
  • Other defective vehicle parts: From the fuses to the serpentine belt.

Honda Civic Hybrid Battery Unreliable Report Says

Honda Australia will maintain the eight-year warranty on the Civic Hybrid battery, despite the warranty on the same battery being extended to nine and in some models 11 years.

A study by US publication Consumer Reports has found that Honda Civic Hybrid models may suffer from premature high-voltage battery pack failures.

The April issue of Consumer Reports says that earlier model Honda Civic Hybrids, particularly the 2009 model, dont measure up well against the competition. The report follows an extension of the Honda Civic Hybrids battery warranty in the US after large numbers needed to be replaced.

Over a 12-month survey period, nearly 20 per cent of 2009 Honda Civic Hybrid owners required a battery replacement, while the replacement rate on 2003, 2004 and 2010 Civic Hybrid models exceeded 10 per cent.

For owners outside of warranty, the cost of replacing the battery that feeds the Integrated Motor Assist system can range from $2,000 to $4,000 . Thats a substantial expense for a non-luxury vehicle thats less than a decade old.

Though Honda has not issued an official statement on the matter, a Technical Service Bulletin published in late 2012 extends the warranty in the US on the IMA drive battery.

Cars that were previously covered for 10 years or 100,000 miles are now covered for 11 years or 137,000 miles , while cars originally sold with an eight-year, 80,000-mile warranty are now covered for nine years or 96,000 miles .

Batteries are not one size fits all. There are several things to consider:

  • Size:Typically based on your vehicles make, model and engine type, it is literally the footprint of the battery, along with placement of the battery terminals. Every battery has a slightly different terminal placement. Take care to make sure the new battery you are putting into your car, truck or SUV is the same size as the one you are replacing. Its got to be apples to apples. In other words, dont try to fit a pineapple into the space reserved for a canteloupe.
  • Age:Like a loaf of fresh-baked bread, batteries are best when fresh, within six months of manufacture. Most batteries, like the one in your current vehicle, will have a date code to tell you this information. When in doubt, call the battery maker to decipher the date code.
  • Cold Cranking Amps: Can this battery start your frozen SUV at 0 degrees Fahrenheit in the dead of winter when the oil is as thick as molasses? The higher the Cold Cranking Amps rating, the better the batterys starting power. The rating refers to the number of amps a 12-volt battery can deliver at 0 degrees F for 30 seconds, while maintaining at least 7.2 volts.
  • Reserve Capacity: In the case of an alternator failure, the Reserve Capacitywill give you an estimate of how long your cars battery will be able to run on battery power alone, without the help of the alternator.

Honda Civic Hybrid Battery Life

I have a 2007 Honda Civic Hybrid with about 61k miles. Im wondering what kind of battery life people experience with the hybrids. Im 6 years into this and wonder how much longer I can expect before having to replace the batteries.

We have Civic Hybrids just like yours in our fleet. Many of them have already had the main battery packs replaced.

I dont mean to imply that it will soon happen to you

Im just giving you my observations

Honda hybrids seem to have more battery issues than Toyotas. But who can tell about your particular car?

You are probably at the age to expect the battery to start failing, might not but if you need a replacement you can buy reman online and they can have one of their installers come swap the battery for you depending on where you live.

There are a number of Prius taxis in our area and many have already gone 300,000 miles or more on the original batteries. The operators have already saved enough money to replace the $3000 or so batteries several times.

Not sure how long those batteries in other hybrids will last.

Neighbor of mine has an 07 or maybe its an 08 Civic Hybrid. He still has the original battery. Last I knew he had about 130k miles on his Civic.

I looked and Honda warranty on the web for batteries, 3 year 36k, is that right for the hybrid, and replacement cost is $2k?

How Can I Test A Honda Civic Hybrid Battery

Iâm looking at used electric cars. I know I need to check the battery life before I buy. How do I test a Honda Civic hybrid battery?

For quick results, you can force charge a hybrid battery to understand how well it works

  • More frequent trips to the gas station
  • Battery does not hold a charge as well
  • Frequent recalibrations
  • IMA warning light comes on

force charge

My First Hybrid Strange Electrical Problem 2007 Honda Civic Hybrid

Just bought my first hybrid, a 2007 Honda Civic Hybrid. Regrets already.

Need help diagnosing this behavior. Im about 80% sure the starting battery is dead, but hybrid

Day 1

  • After 5 seconds, all dash lights and interior lights start blinking, powering on/off
  • Rev engine at 2500 RPM for about 2 mins
  • Turn off engine
  • Turn back on, runs good, no problems
  • Day 2

  • Dash and interior lights powering on/off again
  • Give RPMs for a bit
  • Turn off engine
  • Try to start 5 minutes later, car starts
  • Day 3

  • All dash and interior lights powering on/off again
  • Try to restart, click-click-click
  • Dome lights work, remote entry works, power locks work, power windows do not work
  • So either my car battery is really dead or the main hybrid battery under the seat is dead. Or possibly something else? Have no voltmeter and limited time, so I wanted to get some answers from SE first before committing.

EDIT I should also note the power steering and brakes fail when the dash is flashing like a Christmas tree. Even while its being driven.

How Do I Replace The Battery In My Honda

How to Fix Honda Civic Hybrid IMA Battery –

A confident do-it-your-selfer can replace a vehicle battery. Start by checking your vehicle owners manual for the batterys proper size and location. Find the positive and negative posts. The positive post will have a red plastic cover over it. Look for a + sign stamped onto the battery or printed on a nearby label. Loosen the negative terminal bolt and remove the cable. Be sure not to touch the positive post. Once you loosen the bolt, use a terminal puller to remove the cable. Repeat the sequence with the positive post.

Now remove the clamp or retaining system that keeps the battery in place. Carefully lift out the old battery. Look for any corrosion on the cables and remove it with a wire brush or terminal cleaning tool.

Drop in the new battery so that the positive post lines up with the red cable. Secure it with the battery retaining clamp that you removed earlier. If the battery has anti-corrosion washers, put them in place now and use a thin layer of anti-corrosion grease to prevent buildup. Tighten the positive cable and then do it all over again with the negative black cable.

Make sure the battery is secure and congratulations: youve replaced your cars battery!

My 2003 Honda Civic Hybrids IMA battery has been dying for the past year. Last week, I finally put together the money to get it repaired. I was never going to go to anyone but Ace, having already done my research. Aces new location is so much better than their previous Westminster site with a great waiting room/clean bathroom. Mos attention to detail and knowledge is great. This company has been in business for more than 11 years doing hybrid repairs why get financially creamed by a dealer when you get better customer service and, most likely a better unit for your car. I am totally pleased and so glad to be able to finally drive this car I recommend Ace highly.

Cause Of Honda Civic Hybrid Battery Failures

Undercharging has been the major cause of premature battery failure in Honda Civic hybrid IMA batteries. The problem, according to Honda, is caused by frequent stop-and-go city driving with the A/C on, especially during hot weather. The hybrid battery may become discharged as a result of this type of driving. This can lead to battery degeneration and failure over time.

The hybrid battery must be kept at 50 to 60% of its full charge for best service life. This requires frequent driving in order to keep the battery charged . If the car is left unattended for more than a month , the battery may deplete to the point where it never fully recovers and eventually fails.

A battery that has been totally discharged and not recharged within 90 days may not accept a normal charge and fail prematurely. The battery might potentially be harmed by extreme heat. Curing paint in a bake oven that reaches 150 degrees F may damage a cars battery if it has been damaged and repainted. When working on a Honda Civic Hybrid, body shops are advised not to allow the oven temperature to become too high.

    Safety

I bought this car for my 65 mile round trip commute. It’s awesome on the highway if I drive at a constant speed. Going 80, I’ll get about 42 mpg. 65-70 mph and it will be around 45-48 mpg. Be a pain to everyone else and get 49-52 mpg. Acceleration is horrible, and so is the throttle response when trying to stomp on the accelerator pedal. Overall, this car does what it is intended to, be a great commuter. In addition, it is easy to drive at the limits because the low rolling resistance tires are always screaming at you.

I bought this car because I commute too many miles a week for a 4.0 v6 to cut it. I drove the car back from Chesapeake VA to the top corner of Pennsylvania and it drove wonderfully. The gas mileage is superb I get mid-upper 40’s in my area during the dead of winter. The comfort is just about the same as my truck, however I’m more into functionality than luxury when it comes to vehicles, so if you need clouds to sit on, this isn’t your car. The car has little passing power unless you shift down a few gears, but that’s not what it’s designed for.

    Battery Group Sizes Explained

By referring to your cars recommended group size, you can easily select the correct battery for its build. Batteries in each group have similar dimensions, power output specs, and terminal configurations.

When buying a battery for the 2004 Civic, you need either the 51 or 51R group size. Trim levels with the 1.7L engine use the 51, while the SiR and others with the 2.0L need the 51R.

The only difference between the two is the position of the positive and negative terminals. On the R, they are reversed to better accommodate the cables.

Although there are slight variations, the 51 and 51R dimensions are around:

    • Length: 9 inches
    • Width: 5 inches
    • Height: 8 inches

With those dimensions, your battery will fit in its tray just right even with the hood fully closed.

Their specs are mostly the same as well with both having a minimum of 400 cold cranking amps. Their capacity should lie around 47 amp hours, while reserve capacity is at least 75 minutes.
