Peace Of Mind When You’re Not There
Your Ava camera records in HD video and streams it right to your smart phone or tablet when used in partnership with the Clan app. This means you have the ability to check everything is safe and well back home at any time of day or night.
And with the NEW Multi Camera View, you can see up to 4 cameras all at the same time!
With easy-to-share capabilities, you can give access to anyone who might need it too, so you can have additional support when its required.
Improvements Wed Like To See
If there were any improvements to the camera wed like to see in future models colour night vision like the Arlo Pro 3 would be nice. A stronger speaker would also be good if they can cram it into the small housing and still keep it at least IP 68 water-resistant.
The other small annoyance was its lack of flexibility regarding how it is mounted. If you are using it upright on a table, stand or similar then no problem. Likewise, if you are using it screwed to a wall its ready to go but if you are needing to hang it from the ceiling then you need a special mount which is extra.
This could be solved by allowing the software to reverse the camera view if you slip the camera upsidedown but instead, you can only mount the camera upright, so the special bracket is needed.
Not a big deal but just remember if you are mounting it to the ceiling or want to mount it under a soffit youll need the extra bracket.
Increasing the field of motion zones to include height would be good.
How To Choose A Wireless Outdoor Security Camera
Why you can trust T3 Our expert reviewers spend hours testing and comparing products and services so you can choose the best for you. Find out more about how we test.
When choosing an outdoor wireless security camera, look first to the battery. There is a downside to this cable-free operation though, which is battery life. Make sure you check how long your outdoor camera is going to last between recharges or battery swaps before making your purchase â and remember to top them up when needed, or they’re just ornamental. To save power, wireless cams tend to stay static for the most part, only really firing up when they detect motion or you opt to use live view the more they’re active, the shorter that battery life will be.
We’d also suggest choosing a wireless security camera on the basis of convenience. How easy is it to juice back up? Some require the unit itself to be plugged in to recharge, some have bespoke replaceable batteries, some take off-the-shelf cells. A quick-swap battery is a must if you’re installing on your eaves, so you don’t need to make two trips up a ladder to keep it running.

Getting To Know Your Stick Up Cam
The Ring Stick Up Cam is a discreet outdoor-rated security camera with a black finish. It comes with a couple of different base attachments and related hardware. A screwdriver and a drill bit are included with your purchase, too, to help you with the install.
For simplicity and to avoid making permanent holes in the CNET Smart Home, I placed a Stick Up Cam on a flat surface during testing instead of attaching it to a wall or ceiling. Youll want to go with something more long-term if you buy one, since wind and other weather changes can easily knock an outdoor camera out of position. Theyre easier for someone to steal that way, too.
I wouldnt say the Stick Up Cam has an especially attractive design, but it did easily blend in with the surroundings. Its hardware felt durable as well, and it survived wind and snow flurries without complaint.
Take a look at the chart below to see how Rings Stick Up Cam compares to other outdoor cameras:

Other Good Outdoor Security Cameras
We tested a number of outdoor security cameras that we didnt prefer as much as our current top picks but that are still good choices. Note that we do not long-term test these models .
If you dont have great Wi-Fi: The Arlo Go 2 has a lot of the same features as our top cord-free pick, but works with both Wi-Fi and add-on 4G LTE plansalthough those will cost more and are only available via T-Mobile, US Cellular, and Verizon only). This model adds in the option to record free to a microSD card, but you will lose Arlo Secure features, which are really what makes Arlo cameras worth buying. Also, this camera only records in 1080p, has a smaller viewing angle , and costs about $50 more than our pick.
If you dont have an existing outdoor light: The Arlo Pro 3 Floodlight Camera is our favorite battery-operated floodlight camera combo. It uses a removable, rechargeable battery to blast a bright 2,000 lumens , and in our tests its daytime 2K video was very good. Nighttime images werent as good, unless the subject was standing directly in front of the camera . After months of testing it, we expect the battery to last about three months, depending on usage.

Flaws But Not Dealbreakers

The Arlo app requires a bit of a learning curve. Though its easy to figure out how to view cameras and access recorded clips, some of the settings could be streamlined to make them simpler to use. Most of the device settings can be found by clicking the cog symbol next to your camera from the apps home page. But other crucial settingssuch as setting recording length and motion sensitivityare instead found under the Mode tab at the bottom of the app. We find it unnecessarily confusing and a problem, since thats the way you tell the camera how to respond.
Although the Arlo Pro 4 can distinguish between people, pets, packages, and cars, the camera can tag recordings with only one label at a time. For instance, if a car goes by, it will tag that clip as vehicle detected. If a person walks in front of your camera 10 seconds after the car passes, the Arlo Pro 4 will still tag that clip as a vehicle. If you have your system set to deliver alerts for only certain types of motion, such as people, you could potentially miss a visitor. Our budget pick, the Wyze Cam v3, is the only one of our picks that can tag multiple types of motion in each clip.
We would love the cameras battery life to be closer to Arlos claims, but you can lengthen the time in between charges by making a few tweaks or turning off the spotlight.

What To Look Forward To
We started testing the Wyze Cam v3 Pro, which has a built-in spotlight and records 2K resolution video that is slightly better quality than our Budget pick, the Wyze Cam v3. Since the AI processing is handled in the camera , weve found smartphone alerts arrive faster, and the app is able to load video quicker, too. However, in early testing we had a few incidents where Activity Zones didnt trigger as they should have, or the camera just missed motion all together. As a result, we want to spend a little more time testing this camera before making a full assessment.
We also experienced problems with two different samples of the Eufy SoloCam S40only to discover there was an issue with the waterproof sealing around the front of the camera. The company has updated the camera to address that issue, and so we plan to test the new version. We dont recommend purchasing a refurbished model. Because of that experience, we are holding off on releasing our full review of the Eufy Edge Security System, a $550 package that combines the new Eufy HomeBase 3 Hub and two EufyCam 3 4K solar-powered cameras.
We plan to review the TP-Link Tapo C420S2 Smart Wire-Free Security Camera System, a system that comes with two wire-free 2K cameras and the Tapo H200 Hub. Both cameras have color night vision, should last 180 days using removable batteries, and have the ability to identify people, pets, and cars. Users can save camera footage to a microSD card or Tapo Care cloud storage .
How Do I Install Security Cameras
Lorex security cameras and security systems are designed for DIY installation. The installation depends on the technology that the security camera or system uses. For example, we have two types of wired security camera systems: IP security systems and Analog security systems. Both require a cable from the security camera to a recorder. Wire-Free security cameras, as well as Wi-Fi security cameras do not require a hardwired connection to a recorder. Rather, they send their data wirelessly, either to a recorder, hub, or app. The difference is that Wire-Free cameras are battery-operated and do not need to be plugged in, while Wi-Fi cameras need to be plugged in or wired into the existing power connections, as is the case for Wi-Fi security doorbells and floodlight security cameras. Can Wireless Cameras Work Without Internet
Wireless smart cams generally rely on your home internet connection to function, but that isn’t always the case. Some devices, like Nest’s wireless video doorbell and Wyze’s cameras, can save footage locally in case of an outage. Other systems, like Lorex’s cameras, work using their own wireless network. That means as long as their base station has power, the wireless cameras will keep recording onto a microSD card.
How The Eufy Floodlight Cam 2 Pro Has Held Up
Ive had the Eufy floodlight installed on my back deck since early 2022. I never expect a ton of activity from there, so its nice to know when someone is coming up the back steps. The light is really nice to have too, since I am always grilling and the lighting is dim otherwiseI like being able to adjust not only the color temperature of the light, but levels too, so guests arent blinded.

The Best Wireless Outdoor Security Cameras 2022
For an overall combination of… well… just about everything, the Arlo Essential Spotlight camera is our pick as the best outdoor wireless security camera of the moment. It’s reliable, it’s compact, it has excellent battery life, and it comes from a brand that you can trust.
You don’t need a smart hub to get this up and running. Take it out of the box, connect it up to your Wi-Fi, and you’re ready to go. The accompanying phone app will be ready and waiting to let you know if anything suspicious is spotted, and you can tune in at any time to the live 1080p feed.
As the name of the camera suggests, there’s a spotlight attached to this particular camera: that should help illuminate whatever it is you’re trying to get a look at , though there’s still colour night vision here that works well even when the spotlight isn’t activated. See the best Arlo camera deals for deals on this model and many other Arlo devices.
The T3 Award-winning Arlo Pro 3 tops our overall list of best security cameras , and it fully deserves its place at the top. The only real downside is its price, which is certainly on the steep end individual cameras are quite pricey in themselves, and you’ll need to spend extra on a pack including the central hub to get going in the first place.
Bonus points to the design, too: the app, the cameras, and even the hub are brilliantly constructed, befitting the slightly premium price. Here’s our full Arlo Pro 3 review for more.
How The Eufycam 2 Pro Has Held Up
Senior staff writer Joel Santo Domingo has been using the EufyCam 2 Pro since 2021 and has no complaints. He did say he initially had to tweak the sensitivity of the motion sensor to limit getting triggers from the sunrise and swaying trees. But since then, Joel said the battery life has been phenomenal.

Sustainability And Outdoor Security Cameras
Many readers are concerned about how the manufacturing, shipping, and normal use of the products we recommend impact the world we live in. Wirecutter takes that seriously too, which is why weve asked the manufacturers of all our picks to answer some basic questions about the materials they use, the life cycle of their products, and related questions about their overall sustainability. Although our product recommendations are based completely on the criteria outlined in How we picked and How we tested, we offer this information to supplement the decision of any reader who uses environmental impact as a deciding factor in their purchases. We also recognize that this may not paint a complete picture of a products supply chain and overall environmental impact.
Outdoor security cameras are not fundamentally designed as sustainable products, but all of the manufacturers of our picks said they use recyclable packaging materials and offer refurbished modelseither directly, through select third-party retailers, or via limited events during the year.
