    Balancing The String Trimmer

When you have the unit properly balanced, adjust the cutting head so its pretty much parallel the ground. This is an easy task Greenworks designed a head that pivots through four positions so you should be able to find a position that works perfectly for you.

Adjusting the head parallel to the ground was easy using the 4-position head pivot and push button.

Overall Review: Worx Wg184 40v Power Share 13 Cordless String Trimmer

Here I am going to give my honest thoughts about the WG184. For starters, I dont like that it doesnt have a brushless motor like most of EGO and Greenworks products. But thats about the only thing Im not in love with.

It is easy to use, powerful as heck, extremely functional, and selling at a great price.

    V Ego String Trimmer Features

Can the new EGO String Trimmer with PowerLoad and Line IQ really be that much better than the competition? Wed love to hear your thoughts. EGO is definitely no newcomer to the lawncare tool market, and theyve pretty much set the standard for cordless leaf blowers. The actual model number is the EGO ST1623 and it includes a carbon fiber shaft that extends and retracts 6-inches. The PowerLoad feature automatically pulls the .095 string trimmer line into the head by just holding a button. The Line IQ feature automatically senses when the line is short, then it automatically feeds out the right amount of line. This ensures that you never run out of line.

    PowerLoad Feature

With a 16-inch cutting swath, the EGO 56V string trimmer mows through the grass and weeds with ease. And, theres plenty of power from the 56-volt arc-lithium battery and brushless motor. A button above the trigger allows you to select Low or High speed. Using a 4Ah battery, the EGO string trimmer will run on Low for about an hour.

Powersmart Cordless String Trimmer Best Value

For those on a budget, the PowerSmart PS76110A Cordless String Trimmer is the best lightweight weed wacker for the money. It easily converts to an edger within seconds when you need it to and comes with a completely adjustable handle. The design is quite ergonomic, so you shouldnt get fatigued very quickly while using it. The battery is decently long-lasting and only requires one hour to charge.

It has an automatic feed spool system, so you dont have to worry about bumping. The line just comes out automatically as necessary. The whole thing weighs only 7.5 pounds and has a 10-inch cutting diameter. This is a bit smaller than the other weed eaters we reviewed. However, you really cant complain when it only weighs 7.5 pounds.

The Remington RM25C Curved Shaft Gas String Trimmer is expensive, we admit. But it comes with a lot of features that are hard to find. It runs on gas, which makes it quite a bit more powerful than the other options weve mentioned thus far. This may be a huge plus for some people, but others may not want to deal with mixing and buying gas. It is a matter of personal choice. You dont have to worry about this weed eater running out of power thats for sure.

This machine also uses a thicker line for extra durability and it helps cut through those extra-thick patches of grass and weeds. We liked that this Remington weed eater has a 16-inch cutting swath, which is far more than most of the competition.

Ego Moves From Home Depot To Lowes In Huge Retail Shakeup

Crazy news came out this week with a press release from The Home Depot. The company stated that its outdoor power equipment is being reset and positioned by brand. This new brand rollout is expected to hit all 1300 of its U.S. stores by the end of the year. That all seemed fineuntil they dropped this little nugget:

As part of this merchandise reset, the company has made the decision to discontinue the EGO line of outdoor power equipment.

UPDATE: On Wednesday, July 22, 2020, a Lowes press release stated the following:

Beginning in December 2020, Lowes will be the exclusive nationwide home center to offer the top-rated line of EGOs high-quality and innovative battery-powered mowers, blowers, string trimmers, hedge trimmers, edgers, chainsaws, and snowblowers.

Given this news, our initial speculation proved closer than we thought. Lowes has also indicated it will begin offering select SKIL battery-powered outdoor power equipment in late 2020. This includes push and self-propelled mowers, leaf blowers, string and hedge trimmers, among other products and accessories.

Pushing The Limits Of Our Ego

We put the 56v EGO String trimmer in the hands of a lawncare pro, and we also put it to work in the forest behind our shop. This unit is definitely not lacking in power, and its pretty light too. The knee and waist-high weeds and grass did not seem to bother the EGO. We like that theyve specd this unit to run with typical commercial-grade 0.095 trimmer line. This is usually the go-to line size for the Pro.

The adjustable shaft length and adjustable handle make it easy to change users and positions very quickly. You can get the EGO ST1623 as a kit with the 4Ah battery, and the charger for $299. This includes a 5-year tool warranty and a 3-year battery warranty.

What About Battery Life And Accessories

Best Battery String Trimmer – EGO vs. Kobalt vs. SKIL (Review)

If youre planning to replace a gas-powered trimmer, Id say you should be aware of the battery life of these things. They typically last between 30 and 60 minutes of continuous use, and the batteries will take anywhere from 30 minutes to 2 hours to charge up .

For that reason , Id invest in an extra battery or two, so you dont have to wait.

Be aware that lithium-ion batteries will slowly discharge, especially if left on the device theyre intended to power . To make it last longer, remove it from the trimmer when not in use and bring it inside. If you havent charged the battery in a couple of weeks, youll need to charge it up again. Luckily, lithium-ion batteries dont have a memory.

    Cordless Weed Eater Maintenance

Your cordless trimmer wonât need nearly as much weed eater maintenance as a gas one will. Youâll still need to do a few things to keep it trimming beyond the warranty period.

Probably the most important thing to do is to keep it clean. The motor can get pretty hot so you want to keep any venting from getting impacted with grass trimmings.

Check your user manual for any lubrication that the motor might require and do this periodically.

The heart of your cordless trimmer is the battery. Make sure that you donât store the battery anywhere that it will experience extreme hot or cold. Thatâs a sure way to shorten its lifespan.

Also, when charging the battery donât leave the battery in the charger once itâs fully charged.

    Toro Powerplex: Powerful And Cordless

If youre finding that too many of the cordless electric weed trimmers lack power, you should definitely take a look at this powerful option from Toro.

Toro isnt as big a name as some of the others reviewed here, but that doesnt mean they lack a reputation. Toro is a name to turn to for power, efficiency, and performance. This PowerPlex trimmer is no exception to that rule, and it has as much juice as any other weed eater reviewed here today.

It features 40 volts in a lithium-ion battery pack. Thats double the power of most standard trimmers youll find, which rarely exceed 20V. Tough weeds dont stand a chance.

Though the battery is sleek, it is a bigger unit and heavier than many others. Luckily, this weed eater is nicely balanced and feels great and maneuverable in use. The body and construction are of such high quality that you feel very little vibration, despite the extra juice.

It features variable speed control, and you can increase or decrease your RPMs just by feathering the trigger while you work. The assist handle can be moved up or down the trimmer shaft without the use of tools. Depending on how much youre gunning it, you should get roughly 45 minutes of use per charge.

The head is cast aluminum, giving it a lot of durability, and the head auto feeds, so you dont have to bump it on the ground to get more string.

If youre concerned about power, Toro is one of the best cordless grass trimmers around, with excellent customer reviews to boot.

Core: ‘gasless’ And Long Battery Life

Core is another brand you might be less familiar with, and that’s because they aren’t always found in your typical garden store. This CGT400 is one of my favourite electric string trimmers because it’s really built to take a beating.

I’d qualify them as a more professional-grade cordless weed trimmer, and they’re built to last in several ways.

This trimmer has two modes. The first is meant for standard grass trimming, and it has the head spinning at 7,000 RPM. This allows you to cut through tall grass like there’s no tomorrow, but it eats up the battery power slightly faster. The other mode runs at 5,000 RPM but offers more torque. This is better for conserving battery life and ripping out tough weeds like thistles.

The power cell on this trimmer is top of the class, offering up to 70 minutes of continuous use. If you have a larger lawn or garden space and you need a super long-lasting battery pack, this is absolutely the option to go for.

The head is a ‘dual line’ version, meaning you feed in two different spools. The line is fed in the standard ‘bump’ method, and the head is really well built. It comes with a five-year warranty for residential use, and a two year for commercial. That’s phenomenal coverage.

With its CORE electric engine technology, this trimmer offers excellent power efficiency and torque, making it one of the best cordless garden trimmers for both personal and commercial use.

Black & Decker: Among The Best

Unless youre living under a rock, youve probably heard of Black & Decker. Theyre well known in the power tool realm, and theyve got a good quality line of garden and lawn maintenance tools on offer now, all electric.

This Black & Decker beauty is a powerful little cordless weed eater with tons of flexibility and compatibility to boot. The whole thing runs on a 20-volt lithium-ion battery pack, which is easily removable for easy charging. That also means you can have multiple battery packs and swap them out for continuous use.

The whole unit is fairly light in weight and well balanced, so using it isnt a huge chore. It has a trigger handle at the end where you can control the power, and a loop handle about a third of the way down the shaft. The reach is excellent.

A nice feature of this powerful cordless grass trimmer is the ability to vary the power output. You can range from 6,500 RPM for simple grass cutting, up to 8,500 RPM for stubborn weeds and tougher vegetation. This is controlled on the handle. Note: keep in mind that higher RPMs means a shorter battery life.

    Kobalt Kst 140xb Build Quality

In addition, an attachment point for a sling if you choose to use one is now an option. Its a plastic construction reinforced with metal at the clipping point. Well have to wait and see how it holds up to the Florida sun. The grip has a textured rubberized area to provide a comfortable non-slip grip. The on/off button and the speed mode button are located at thumbs length and were easy to use with just a push of a button. A green LED light indicates which mode you are in and defaults to the low speed.

To conserve battery, the unit will turn off at 1 minute if left on and unused. Overall I found the length and weight to be comfortable for my height at 57. Managing Editor, Kenny Koehler came over to look over the unit as well. At 62, he also found a comfortable operating setup to use. Well, as comfortable as you can expect when its 95 outside.

    Ni-Cad vs Li-Io?

If youâre looking for a battery powered weed eater youâll need to choose between either Nickel Cadmium or Lithium Ion batteries.

If you want a cheap cordless trimmer then it will come with a Ni-Cad battery while the best battery powered weed eater will always have a Li-Io battery.

Ni-Cad batteries are less expensive but they are heavier, have a shorter lifespan, take longer to recharge and will need to be replaced sooner than the Li-Io batteries.

As a Ni-Cad battery discharges youâll also notice reduced output power from your cordless string trimmer. Li-Io batteries are a lot lighter, charge quicker, last longer and donât suffer from the same reduced power output as they discharge.

Cordless String Trimmer Battery Voltage and Capacity

The battery in a cordless string trimmer will be rated according to its voltage and capacity.

The higher the voltage, the higher the cutting power youâre going to get. Of course your trimmer motor has a lot to do with this factor as well.

The capacity of the battery refers to how much charge it can store. This is normally quoted in Amp Hours . The higher this figure is, the longer the battery will last during use.

Whatâs the best voltage for my cordless string trimmer battery?

Youâll notice that different cordless weed eaters come with different voltage ratings for their motors. This is one of those situations where more is generally better if youâre looking for power.

    Black+decker Gh900 String Trimmer

Lowes Kobalt 40V Weed Eater #Shorts

The BLACK+DECKER GH900 String Trimmer comes with an automatic feed system, which ensures that you can work efficiently without bumping. The motor is powerful, and the transmission ensures that quite a bit of power is transmitted to the string. The power drive transmission also prevents the machine from bogging down. We found this machine decently lightweight and appreciated with adjustable height and pivoting handle.

However, this machine is corded. It can only go a set length from an outlet, which may or may not be enough to cover your whole yard. It may be enough for some small, compact yards. If your yard is decently sized, though, youll likely need an extension cord. This can get very annoying, very quickly. The corded problem is the main reason we rated this weed eater so low. It just isnt worth the frustration.

The Husqvarna 128LD Detachable Gas String Trimmer is very expensive. It runs off of gas, which is one of the reasons the price is higher. This also gives it more power and means you wont have to deal with cords or batteries. The cutting diameter is 17 inches, which is quite a bit larger than other options on the market.

Unlike other high-end weed eaters, this one does not have an automatic feeder system. Some people prefer the bump system as this trimmer has, but we find it to be a downgrade from the automatic system. For the expensive, we expected this trimmer to be automatic.
