Best Cordless String Trimmer 202: Best 40
The Ryobi 40-Volt battery powered trimmer offers gas-like powerwith none of the hassle of mixing oil and gas. Attachment capability means you can add on RYOBI Expand-It attachments, saving you time, money and space.
The RYOBI 40-Volt Cordless Trimmer comes with premium 0.080 inch twisted line. The easy bump-feed string head means faster reloads. The cutting width is adjustable from 13 to 15 inches to allow for longer run time or wider cutting width. This trimmer is recommended for yards up to one acre.
Straight Shaft Vs Curved Shaft
There are two main types of shafts that weed eaters come in. Straight shafts and curved shafts both offer slightly different things and will benefit other people based on their weed-eating needs.
Straight Shaft Weed Eater
As a general rule of thumb, the straighter shafted strimmers are more durable, largely because when the shaft is curved so is the drive chain inside. Whilst perfectly fine for light to moderate use, heavy users will want to go for a straight shaft.
The overall design of the straight shaft is more functional. Its longer so its reach is extended, and the lack of curvature results in much less vibration during use.
Curved Shaft Weed Eater
The curved shaft design results in a balanced and easy-to-use tool that can feel more comfortable in use. Due to the reduction in length, the overall weight is reduced, and the curve near the motor makes cutting back small areas easy.
Curved shafts are generally better suited to smaller areas.

Consider The Weight Of Your Decision
The weight of a cordless grass trimmer can make a big difference. And the difference between our homeowner pick and the professional options can be 5 or more pounds. When youre waving the string trimmer around the edge of your lawn, thats a lot of extra effort.
If you are concerned about the weight, or if you have an elderly parent or younger child who helps with the chores, make sure to consider the weight before you choose which is the best cordless weed trimmer for you and your family .

Toro Powerplex 51482 Battery Powered Weed Whacker
Likes:
- Feels underpowered
- Plastic feels flimsy and cheap to me
Toro has been making high quality lawn products for a long time. They are one of the most popular commercial lines used to maintain golf courses so they know how to make great equipment!
The PowerPlex 51482 is another high quality product. It is lightweight, has a solid engine and my favorite part is it is foldable.
I dont about you, but I am always looking for a better way to store my lawn care tools and having a foldable shaft is awesome!
I am a bit disappointed in the power and quality of the materials. The plastic housings feel cheap to me compared to similar priced products. I am not sure how long it will last with weekly use.

Cordless Weed Eater Maintenance

Your cordless trimmer wonât need nearly as much weed eater maintenance as a gas one will. Youâll still need to do a few things to keep it trimming beyond the warranty period.
Probably the most important thing to do is to keep it clean. The motor can get pretty hot so you want to keep any venting from getting impacted with grass trimmings.
Check your user manual for any lubrication that the motor might require and do this periodically.
The heart of your cordless trimmer is the battery. Make sure that you donât store the battery anywhere that it will experience extreme hot or cold. Thatâs a sure way to shorten its lifespan.
Also, when charging the battery donât leave the battery in the charger once itâs fully charged.

Ni-Cad vs Li-Io?
If youâre looking for a battery powered weed eater youâll need to choose between either Nickel Cadmium or Lithium Ion batteries.
If you want a cheap cordless trimmer then it will come with a Ni-Cad battery while the best battery powered weed eater will always have a Li-Io battery.
Ni-Cad batteries are less expensive but they are heavier, have a shorter lifespan, take longer to recharge and will need to be replaced sooner than the Li-Io batteries.
As a Ni-Cad battery discharges youâll also notice reduced output power from your cordless string trimmer. Li-Io batteries are a lot lighter, charge quicker, last longer and donât suffer from the same reduced power output as they discharge.
Cordless String Trimmer Battery Voltage and Capacity
The battery in a cordless string trimmer will be rated according to its voltage and capacity.
The higher the voltage, the higher the cutting power youâre going to get. Of course your trimmer motor has a lot to do with this factor as well.
The capacity of the battery refers to how much charge it can store. This is normally quoted in Amp Hours . The higher this figure is, the longer the battery will last during use.
Whatâs the best voltage for my cordless string trimmer battery?
Youâll notice that different cordless weed eaters come with different voltage ratings for their motors. This is one of those situations where more is generally better if youâre looking for power.
Battery Vs Electric Vs Gas Weed Eater
We are talking here about a garden power tool, so lets look at the three ways you can power this device battery , electric , and gas-powered. Each comes with its own set of pros and cons and will suit different types of jobs. So how about we run down the options
Electric Weed Eaters
Electric weed eaters offer similar cutting power to battery-operated machines but come with some restrictions by the fact that they have you tethered with a power cord running to the mains electric.
You lose the ability to weave freely across the landscape as the cord has a length restriction and can get caught on objects or features around the yard. Then theres the setup, which usually involves running extension cables across your yard, which sometimes can be prone to electrical risk from surprise rainfall.
They do, however, have their benefits, such as a constant flow of power, they dont run out of juice. Once you are set up and ready to go, you wont be interrupted. They also tend to be much lighter and cheaper than cordless strimmers, so if good value and a lightweight tool are high on your list of priorities then consider a corded model.
Gas Weed Eaters
Then, we have gas-powered weed eaters. These tools were once favored by professionals as they combine both power and flexibility allowing you to get rid of even the thickest of weeds without any cords holding you back.

Sure, you have to charge a battery, but there is never the need to mix 2-cycles or find a longer extension cord, and if you have two batteries, you are in pretty good shape.
The biggest factors are in the cutting path, battery life, and comfort.
