How to Replace Thermostat Batteries

Some electronicthermostats have a reset button. The best place to find information about resetting your thermostat is in the user manual. Generally, the reset button is small in a recessed housing. Follow the instructions in the user manual to perform a reset on your thermostat.

If you cannot locate the reset button, you can also try to perform a factory reset. In order to perform a factory reset, you need to ensure the thermostat is disconnected from all sources of power. This means the batteries must be removed, and any it must be disconnected from any other power source. Then, wait 5 seconds to upwards of one minute, and then reinstall the power source. This will drain the thermostat of any existing power and reset it to its factory defaults.

Q: Why Are Batteries Even Important

A: Changing your thermostats batteries are important because even if theres a power outage, batteries retain the thermostat settings so you wont have to reprogram them. Additionally, if youre having trouble with your heating and cooling system, low batteries in your digital thermostat could be directly to blame. If your thermostat isnt working, your HVAC system wont either.

Why Do You Need To Reset The Thermostat

Resetting a thermostat means you reset it to its factory settings. You will erase all the custom settings you’ve previously done. Once you finished the reset, you’ll have to program it again, sometimes even the time and date included.

So, why do you have to reset it then? Because after you return the thermostat to its initial factory settings, it will be easier to resolve issues with programming, and HVAC system or thermostat connection-related issues.

In the event that you want to reset your thermostat after changing the batteries, you have to know the type of thermostat you have. Battery-powered thermostats can either be programmable or non-programmable.

Programmable Thermostat

You can reset a programmable thermostat by removing the batteries or through the battery ‘flip-flop’ method. Here are the steps to do it:

  • Switch off your thermostat.
  • Open the battery cover or door. If it is located on the back, detach the thermostat from the wall.
  • Next, take out the batteries.
  • Then, put the batteries in reverse or opposite directions. The negative sides should line up to the positive terminal for 5 seconds.
  • Afterward, remove the inverted batteries. Return them to their normal positions.
  • Check the display and once it turns on, this indicates that the thermostat has been reset.

Non-Programmable Digital Thermostat

Of all the types of thermostats, non-programmable digital ones have the simplest resetting method. The steps are as follows:

    The Safety Switch Was Triggered

In some homes, an air conditioner or furnace can trigger a safety switch and turn off the thermostat entirely if any damage has been detected.

During the warmer months of the year when the air conditioner is being used, this generally takes place when theres a water overflow in the condensate pan.

As for furnaces, a safety switch can be triggered when the unit becomes too hot and damage is imminent. No matter why the safety switch was triggered, you should have your system inspected immediately.

    Sala Air Conditioning

Thermostat malfunctions can make you think something is seriously wrong with your HVAC system. Learning some basic thermostat troubleshooting methods may save you the cost of having an HVAC technician make the diagnosis. Heres how to investigate three common thermostat problems.

    HVAC System Suddenly Quits Working

If the thermostats display is dark, a lack of power may be the issue. Try replacing the batteries, then check for a blown fuse or tripped breaker in the electrical panel. If the thermostat is still unresponsive, make sure the breaker is shut off and remove the cover. If it looks dirty inside, use canned air or a soft artist brush to clean away accumulated grime that may be affecting its functionality. Then look for issues like loose wiring or terminal screws and tighten them up. If the wiring looks corroded, consider replacing the thermostat.

Thermostat Setting and Room Temperature Dont Match

Dirty thermostat components can cause this issue, so clean the inside as per the above instructions first. A jarring bump can throw a non-digital thermostat off level and cause setting and temperature discrepancies too. To fix it, place a carpenters level just above the device and make adjustments until its level again.

Thermostat Is Completely Blank How To Troubleshoot

I have a thermostat that is completely blank . I’d like to troubleshoot it myself even if I do ultimately hire a pro! We’re in sunny southern california, so it’s possible it’s had no display for sometime, but when I first noticed it was after we flipped all circuit breakers to the house for another reason . I’m ignorant of heating systems, but having done research, it seems that one of two things are most likely:

    1. No power to main unit. Main unit communicates to thermostat via 24 V or lower.2. Power to main unit, but no power from main unit to thermostat. Possibly bad connections, etc.

I’d like some ideas from a kind and patient soul on how to troubleshoot both of these.Starting with #1…. The main heater is plugged in, but how the heck does one tell “it’s on”? I see no lights, etc to indicate it is on. I have tried the socket it’s plugged into and it’s powered. However perhaps there is an on/off switch? The model # is MPGA075B4B. Originally, I thought the make was Honeywell because I saw that huge name on the on/off gas switch in the unit. But as I did internet searches, the name “Ducane” kept popping up. Not sure if these heaters are made by one company and use Honeywell switch or what is going on. Anyhow, I can’t find a manual for it, and I can’t see how to know if it’s “on”.

Finally, any other ideas? And I can post photos or more information.

    I appreciate the help.Dave

Why Does My Honeywell Thermostat Say Temporary

    Nest Thermostat Not Working

A temporary message on your Honeywell thermostat is to let you know that all the scheduled temperature settings are currently on hold.

The current temperature will be the set temperature, which will persist until the hold period is complete or overridden.

After the hold period is over, the temperatures come back on schedule.

Honeywell Thermostat Not Working After Battery Change

Did your Honeywell thermostat stop working after replacing the batteries? Youre not alone! In this post, Ill walk you through some handy tips to fix this problem yourself. Lets get started.

In short, if your Honeywell thermostat stops working after changing the batteries, remove the batteries and put them back in properly. If that doesnt help, locate your HVAC system circuit breaker and turn it off and on. This should resolve the problem.

For more details on how to fix this problem, keep reading.

    Assess The Base Plate

Most new electronic thermostats have a base plate to which the wires are attached. The thermostat itself snaps onto the base plate and a small multi-plug engages the baseplate. There is a possibility that the plug is not engaging or is damaged.

Check the back of the thermostat and the base plate. Make sure that none of the small pins on the plug are bent or missing. Take care when reinstalling the thermostat to the base plate. It is easy to get the small pins on the plug misaligned and damage them.

If the pins or the plug are damaged, you must replace the entire thermostat. It is almost impossible to repair this problem.

Aspect : Did You Buy The Correct Batteries

Sometimes batteries can be the same size but are actually different types of batteries. There are many types of batteries, and Honeywell thermostats require a very specific type of battery. Honeywell thermostats usually use alkaline AA or AAA batteries.

Especially modern smart thermostats dont work with all types of batteries. Consult your user manual to find out the correct type of battery your thermostat needs.

If you dont know which batteries will be the best, it is always safe to replace the existing batteries with exactly the same brand and type that originally came with your Honeywell thermostat.

    Your Thermostat Is Broken

Replace Batteries On A Honeywell Thermostat / Heat, AC Or Back Light Not Working?

Worst case scenario, your thermostat is at the end of its life and simply needs to be replaced. While all thermostats are different, the average device has a life expectancy of about 10 years.

Give your local HVAC professionals a call they will advise you on whether or not your thermostat needs to be replaced.

Fix #: Replace All Batteries Simultaneously

One thing about most devices that use batteries is that you cannot replace one and leave the other.

If you change one for a new one and the other is old, your thermostat will not work.

Remember, these two batteries do not have the same power level, so they can never function properly. You will need to insert a new pair of batteries at the same time and check if your thermostat works well again.

A Bad Fuse May Be The Culprit

If you see that the switch is turned to the on position, and youre still not getting power, then its time to inspect the thermostats fuse. Youll want to start by removing the cover and looking for the fuse. Different models put them in different areas, but if you dont know what a fuse looks like, its a small glass tube with metal on the ends.

When inspecting the fuse, look for the filament running through its length. If you notice that the filament is broken, then you know that the fuse will need to be replaced. You can purchase new fuses at most home improvement stores for a very reasonable price.

Furthermore, you need to know that this may have happened due to other circuit components. For instance, a bad relay coil or a direct short between a 24 v AC wire and Common or Ground can cause a lot of current to flow through the fuses. The fuses are just not made to handle that much amperage. The fuse will literally pop out when this happens.

If you want to check your fuse and other circuit components, simply inspect it or hook it up to a multimeter . However, if you dont have any experience with electrical components, you will need to call a professional to have a look.
