Connect The Solar Panel To The Charge Controller

How to connect solar panels to battery bank/charge controller/inverter, Wiring diagrams

Next up connecting the solar panel!

Most solar panel cables come with pre-attached MC4 connectors. To connect a solar panel to a charge controller, you need MC4 solar adapter cables.

For the panels positive cable, connect the MC4 inline fuse, positive extension cable , and then the MC4 adapter cable.

For the panels negative cable, connect the negative extension cable and then the MC4 adapter cable. Dont let the exposed wires touch!

Follow the instructions in your charge controllers manual for connecting it to the solar panel. Ill show you how I connected mine:

First connect the negative solar cable to the charge controller, then connect the positive. Your charge controller should turn on or light up to indicate that the panel is properly connected.

Everything is now wired together!

Just one more step

Connect Battery Bank To Inverter

The last step is to attach the battery bank to the input lugs of your inverter. Afterward, attach the inverter to the house panel and check to see if it works properly. At this step, the inverter will change the batteries DC current and convert it into 110 volt AC current that will be used in the house panel.

Additionally, the inverter can be programmed in order to produce excess power to the power company in the event that the house panel is attached to the power grid.

Optimizing Solar Energy Production

Weve seen that solar panels are variable generators. The solar charge controller has a built-in algorithm that optimizes power generation from the solar panel at all times.

There are two types of solar chargers: MPPT and PWM.

We highly recommend MPPT solar chargers, they are up to 30% more efficient than the PWM technology.

How Do Solar Panels Work

We surely all agree that solar panels are pretty awesome, but that doesnt mean we all understand how they work! The answer is simple enough: when sunlight hits a solar panels cells, a chemical reaction occurs that produces direct current .

The DC is what powers your home, car, or battery, and how much DC is generated depends on the capacity of your solar panels. However, neither batteries nor solar panels are capable of monitoring or managing how much power is sent into the battery, which is why charge controllers are necessary.

Electrical technology: Parallel Connection of Batteries with Solar ...

One issue that people might have with an RV solar system is the initial cost. As a result, they might wonder if it is worth it. An RV solar system is worth it, especially if you plan to go on extended trips far away from civilization.

If you are in remote locations, your only other option would be to use a solar generator. These come in different forms but the more expensive options can even power an entire house.

However, due to the unpredictable price of fuel, you might end up having to reorganize your budget if there is an unexpected spike in fuel prices. Using solar panels gives you peace of mind when it comes to energy for the RV.

Another issue is noise reduction. A major reason why people use RVs is to go on holiday to a quiet destination. However, if you have a generator roaring in the background, it can interfere with your plans to have a quiet holiday.

Using RV solar panels ensures that you can have a quiet relaxing holiday. Additionally, it ensures that you can enjoy fresh outdoor air by eliminating the noxious fumes from a generator.

You Must Charge 12v Battery With Solar Panel And A Controller

When the battery was fully charged by the MPPT controller the volts reading was 13.5V and current was under 0.5A. The voltage would eventually creep up to 12.73V with hardly any current going into the battery.

I disconnected the MPPT and connected the 100W solar panel directly to the battery. Heres what I found:

  • Terminal battery voltage = 15.5V
  • Charge current = 2.5A

So even though the battery was fully charged, a directly connected solar panel will still push current into it. If left connected, the battery will overheat and become damaged.

Connecting Batteries In Series And Parallel

Welcome to this informative article.

In this page we will illustrate the different types of batteries used into most wind and solar power systems and we will teach you how to wire them together in series and in parallel, in order to get a greater capacity or a higher rated voltage, depending on your needs.

In this way we will get an excellent energy storage system energy generated by our MPPTSOLAR plant.

Are you ready? Let’s begin!

Choosing the right battery type

During the design phase of an off-grid solar power system, it is important to choose the right batteries that will form the battery bank. There are many types of batteries on the market. Below we list the most common:

How to measure the state of charge of a battery?

The most accurate method consists of measuring the density of the electrolyte. If you do not have a density meter, thanks to the following table you will be able to know the state of charge of lead batteries by measuring the open circuit voltage at their terminals with a common digital multimeter.

Density meter value

How to connect multiple batteries together?

First of all, it is essential that all batteries involved are identical and have the same state of charge. Secondly, it is important to use short electrical cables, of the same length and with suitable cross-section for the connection of the batteries. Below you will find some very clear images in order to easily understand the battery connections.

Connect The Battery To The Charge Controller

Note: At this point I put on my gloves and safety glasses because places like Advanced Auto Parts recommend wearing them when working with batteries.

Follow the instructions in your charge controllers manual for connecting it to the battery. Ill show you how to connect the charge controller I used, the Renogy Wanderer:

Connect the negative battery cable, the one without the fuse, to the – battery terminal on the charge controller.

Connect the positive battery cable, the one with the fuse, to the + battery terminal.

Connect the battery cables to the battery terminals negative first, then positive. Before connecting the positive cable, I like to touch it to the positive battery terminal because sometimes there will be a little spark.

Your charge controller should turn on or light up to indicate the battery is properly connected. For instance, mine has a light that turns on.

The battery is now connected!

At this point, your manual may tell you how to program the charge controller for your battery type, voltage, etc.

Mine has a button which I can press to indicate battery type. It defaults to sealed lead acid, which happens to be the type Im using. So I just kept it at the setting it was on.

Connecting Solar Panels Together In Series

How to connect solar panels to battery bank, charge controller, Inverter

The first method we will look at for connecting solar panels together is whats known as Series Wiring. The electrical connection of solar panels in series increases the total system ouput voltage. Series connected solar panels are generally used when you have a grid connected inverter or charge controller that requires 24 volts or more. To series wire the panels together you connect the positive terminal to the negative terminal of each panel until you are left with a single positive and negative connection.

Solar panels in series add up or sum the voltages produced by each individual panel, giving the total output voltage of the array as shown.

How Many Panels Do I Need

A common question we receive is this: How many panels should I buy? How many watts will I need to produce to power my setup?

Every setup is different. If you just want to charge your phone and laptop your setup will look different than someone who wants to power their fridge, TV, and several LED lights.

Heres how you can get a rough estimate of how much energy your setup will need. Appliances use watts. You can google all the watt usage for each of your appliances, then multiply the number of hours you expect to use them per day and add them together. For example, we can use our tv and refrigerator example from earlier. We plan on using our 60 watt tv for 4 hours per day, resulting in 240 Watt/Hours drain . We want to run our 80 watt refrigerador 24 hours a day, resulting in a drain of 1920 Watt/Hours. This means that our system will have a drain of 2160 watt/hours per day.

So how many panels will we need? If we suppose that we have a single 500 watt panel and that well have, on average, five hours of sunlight per day. That means well be theoretically generating 2500 Watt/Hours per day. You may think that this will more than cover your uses, but its important to factor in power loss and inefficiencies.

If you want some help determining how many solar panels you need for your setup, try out this solar calculator. This will give you an estimate based on how many appliances you want to power.

Solar Panels In Series Of Same Characteristics

In this method ALL the solar panels are of the same type and power rating. The total voltage output becomes the sum of the voltage output of each panel. Using the same three 6 volt, 3.0 amp panels from above, we can see that when these pv panels are connected together in series, the array will produce an ouput voltage of 18 Volts at 3.0 Amperes, giving 54 Watts at full sun.

Now lets look at connecting solar panels in series with different nominal voltages but with identical current ratings.

Grab Your Battery Cables And Connect The Battery To The Charge Controller

How to Wire Solar Panels in Series & Batteries in Parallel?

Once you get to this step, we recommend wearing safety gloves as an extra safety measure.

You should also make sure that you have the manual for your charge controller handy during this step.

Consult the charge controller manual for instructions on connecting the charge controller to your battery. This is important because directions will vary depending on which charge controller you use, so make sure you pay close attention.

In all likelihood, it will say something along the lines of the following:

Connect your negative battery cable to the negative battery terminal on your charge controller.

Then, connect the positive battery cable to the positive battery terminal. Once you have properly connected the cables you should see a light come on on your charge controller telling you the connection was made properly.

Depending on the charge controller you have you may also need to program it for your specific battery at this point.

Wiring Our Solar Panels

Just as we can wire our batteries in series or parallel, we can also wire our solar panels in series or parallel. Remember, when we wire in parallel, we add our amps. When we wire in series, we add our volts.

When charging batteries, we want our charging current to reach a certain level of volts, then increase our amperage to charge faster. A 12 volts and 3 amps charging current will charge much faster than a 12 volt and 1 amp current. So you may be tempted to always wire in parallel, especially with the knowledge that high watt solar panels already release more than 12 volts. We must be careful before we increase our amps in this way though. We have to think about our wires.

If we massively increase our amps, well need extremely low gauge cables to safely carry this current. The more amps we put through our wires, the more heat theyll generate as well. Low voltage currents will also have voltage loss if were carrying our energy for long distances.

This is why you may find having an MPPT charge controller may be worth the added cost. With an MPPT charge controller we can wire our panels in series, deal with an easy high voltage low amp current, and still lose almost no energy while charging our batteries.

What If Ive Had My Panels For A Long Time And How Can I Be Sure A Battery Will Be Robust

The good news is that solar panels typically have a very long lifespan, around 25 years. If you have had your panels for a while, they may still match up with the lifespan of a battery which is warranted by Redback for 10 years, but with good battery hygiene, they are likely to last longer. This will assure you that the battery should work well with your solar panels for the length of time you expect.

Our batteries use a lithium iron phosphate battery chemistry, proven to be one of the safest battery chemistries. Redback batteries can be installed in a garage, or outside thanks to the weather rating of each system. There are some limitations to ensure your battery lasts as long as possible speak to your installer about where they believe the best place will be.

Have a chat with your installer to see if you have enough solar panels to power a battery. They will be able to tailor a system to suit you.

Connect The Charge Controller To The Solar Panel

You may notice that your solar panel has special, pre-attached cables on it. These are MC4 connector cables, and most solar panels have them. You will need MC4 solar adapter cables to connect your panel to a charge controller.

Starting with the solar panels positive cable, youll want to connect the MC4 inline fuse with a positive extension cable and then to the MC4 adaptor cable.

With the negative cable youll want to connect the negative extension cable to the MC4 adaptor cable.

  • Do not let the exposed wires touch each other*

Follow your solar panels instruction manual to connect to the charge controller. It should say something like this.

Connect the negative solar cable to the charge controller first and then connect the positive one. Again, your charge controller should light up to indicate the connection was properly made.

What Are The Different Kinds Of Solar Panel Controllers

The most basic type of charger is the trickle charge regulator. The amount of current flow is very low and there simply isnt enough excess energy to damage a battery bank, whatever the type of battery. Its often the best way to extend battery life and ensure battery backup is available whenever you need it. Solar electricity is abundant and free why not use it?

A PV system can either use a PWM or MPPT controller. The MPPT is most efficient an ensure maximum output, particularly when there isnt much sunlight. All can use either type of controller. The whole process is designed to get as much energy as possible from daylight hours and is a great way to minimize your carbon footprint.

Are Car Batteries Good For Solar Panels

Car batteries are not suited for solar applications. I must confess that they do have a small range of use.

Car batteries are perfectly suited for light-duty solar applications.

I use a car battery for a solar garage door opener system. The car battery is suited for such an application because it draws a fairly high current a few times a day for a short period.
