How Do Electric Cars Work
Compared to internal combustion cars, electric cars are quite simple and some of them implement many interesting designs.
For example, electric cars handle better on the road because the battery is usually in the center of the vehicle below the driver and the passengers. This greatly increases the center of gravity and makes the car more stable on the road. The body roll which is present in internal combustion cars is minimal and the cars run like theyre on rails.
The second thing is that they can use up to 4 motors. One per wheel. But in some cars like the Leaf, we only see only one motor. This is the case because the Leaf is designed to be a commuter car and not a performance car.
The battery pack is powering this electric motor and the motor is supplied with the electricity that spins the wheels. Thats why electric cars are also good, the torque is instant and there are no delays from when you press the gas pedal until you get the response. No transmission is needed in this application.
Then when the battery is discharged you can recharge it. The downside of electric cars is that the battery takes a lot of time to charge. And for some people, this is a deal-breaker. Since not all of you want to wait in order to charge your battery.
But what about the Nissan Leaf Battery replacement cost? Well, we are going to cover that and more. But first, lets see which types of batteries and battery capacities the Leaf is using.
Tips For Extending Your Nissan Leaf Bev
Even with BEV prices dropping, you can manage to delay the inevitable by taking particular care of your Leaf’s BEV. While we are used to topping up gasoline-powered cars at the pump to full, this is not advised for BEVs, as Driving Electric explains. The reason for this is that continually charging lithium-ion batteries to 100% can cause them to degrade more quickly than they otherwise might. Ideally, you should only let your Leaf’s battery run down to between 10 to 20%, then recharge it to around 80% maximum.
Similarly, lithium-ion batteries can get warm, and the warmer they get, the more likely they are to degrade. This means that it is probably a good idea to keep your Leaf parked in the shade or a garage, particularly in warmer weather. Similarly, because charging your Leaf’s battery will also cause it to warm up, it is best to avoid charging it immediately after a lengthy drive and let it have a chance to cool down first. Rapid chargers are good for a quick top-up, but these too cause a lot more heat to be generated, again leading to increased battery degradation if used too often. Looking after your Leaf’s battery means that you could enjoy a solid 10-year run out of it before you need to replace its BEV.

How Long Does The Nissan Leaf Battery Last
Besides pure range, its also important to know how long the battery will last. Electric cars are not cheap, and so drivers want to ensure that the critical components have a decently long life.
Nissan offers a standard 5-year or 60,000-mile warranty on the Nissan Leaf powertrain. The bumper-to-bumper warranty is 3 years or 36,000 miles. The battery, however, is given its own special limited warranty of 8 years of 100,000 miles, or at least they are for the 2020 model year. The warranty specifically covers defects in materials or workmanship for that period/distance.
Therefore, we can expect the battery of a Nissan Leaf to last at least for that limited warranty period, 8 years or 100,000 miles. The abcnissan.com blog reports that most owners predict the battery will last for about 10 years. Given that the car was only first released in late 2010, and its second and latest generation is just entering its 5th model year, its still too early to tell for sure how long overall the batteries will last.
In the next section of this article, well look at the common problems that Nissan Leaf batteries face.
How Much Does Car Battery Replacement Cost*

Most car batteries can be purchased for a flat rate, usually with $40-$120 in costs for the battery.
If you want to pay to have a mechanic install the battery, that will usually cost you another $30-$99. Thats because most mechanics have a basic minimum rate that they work for.
However, some also offer to install your battery for free providing you buy the new one from them. And, others will give you a rebate on the total cost if you turn in your old battery.
In every case, your car will fit a range of batteries. However, its usually a good idea to follow manufacturer specifications exactly.
Therefore, the costs for a battery vary by car make and model, depending on battery group size, cold cranking amps, reserve capacity, etc.
The following chart details the average cost of replacing a car battery based on popular car models. Weve left labor costs out, as this is always either a flat rate or included for free with the cost of your battery.

Horrible horrible. My son purchase a vehicle on June 24, 2022. He was leaving from college and the entire ABS system went out, luckily he was smart to through the emergency brake on . He could of hurt himself or someone else on the road. We took the car to Infiniti and they sat aged the entire ABS system was modified . My son purchased an extended warranty as well which is null and void because of the modifications. The dealership says its $12,000 to fix. We just purchased this vehicle for 26k and shift says oh well. No help out all. My son is paying a car that is sitting there and no help. Please dont go.
How Do Hybrid High Voltage Batteries Work
High voltage hybrid batteries are a combination of many individual battery cells. These battery cells are not powerful enough to power a large electrical motor like a hybrid drive motor, but many of these cells put together can drive the hybrid drive electric motor for many miles before needed to be recharged. As the vehicle is driven, the ICE will not only power the wheels, but it will generate electricity for the hybrid drive motor and store it in the hybrid high voltage battery. Also, when slowing down, regenerative braking will develop more power to be stored as electricity in the hybrid high voltage battery. When there is a demand for power, the high voltage battery will discharge into the hybrid drive motor, and this propels the wheels of the vehicle just as the ICE would. In essence, it works as a fuel tank for electricity.

Other Options Except For The Nissan Leaf Battery Replacement
If you are on the market for an EV there are also some other options to consider if you dont want to pay between $5,000 to $12,000 on a new battery pack for a Nissan Leaf.
There are a lot of models these days that are fully electric and could snatch some of them for a good deal.
Your best bet would probably be to get a Nissan Leaf with low miles and also low age. The best would be something between 2 to 4 years of age. Try to avoid the early models since the batteries are extremely expensive and you will end up in an endless money pit.
A newer model with low miles will be somewhat a guarantee that nothing could go wrong with the battery. Remember that these models have 8 years or 100,000 miles warranty for the battery only. And this is a key aspect of the purchase.
Another good example is the Tesla Model 3 which can be purchased for considerably more than the Leaf. But you know that this model is newer and also it packs a more powerful battery for you to enjoy. Not to mention the endless Tesla network of chargers across the country which is another big benefit that you are going to enjoy. Both of these cars are excellent buys and you should consider them.
If you dont have the budget, the best thing is to go for a gas-powered car. Gas cars are not expensive and will last even more than electric. You can pour gas whenever you want in a minute or two. No waiting overall good ownership experience.
The Nissan Leaf Battery Is Ridiculously Expensive
Before we start, know that we are not dissing the Nissan Leaf or any EVs. They are a great way to achieve a better fuel economy and can be the perfect vehicle for your needs. But with every vehicle, there are pros and cons. When it comes to the Nissan Leaf, replacing the battery could be a major con.
According to Driving, one man named Clayton Brander is struggling to replace the battery in his 2013 Nissan Leaf. He got the Leaf as a used option in 2017, finding it very well priced. At the time, the dealership said if you need to replace the battery in the next few years, it should be about $5,000.
But flash forward to 2020, and the man is having tons of trouble finding a battery that can be installed. The dealership is now quoting Clayton $15,000 for a new battery, which is an outrageous price to keep a vehicle from 2013 ticking.
Clayton Brander is a resident of B.C. and has sent Nissan Canada plenty of times, but they keep referring him back to the dealership, then the dealership refers him back to Nissan Canada. This is creating one massive circle of frustration with no answers.

Nissan Leaf Battery Replacement
So, what does the Nissan Leaf battery replacement cost? In three words, its not cheap. Why Im saying this? Because its true. Nissan Leaf batteries cost a hefty amount of money in order to be replaced. This includes the price of the battery and also the price of the labor. Labor also isnt cheap and considering the amount of work, it will add up to the cost fairly quickly.
Lets first discuss the battery costs when it comes to the Leaf. Changing the battery at a dealership is something that you probably dont want because you will pay the most money if you go this route. The bigger the battery, the more money you will have to replace it.
At a dealership, replacing the basic 24 kWh battery will cost you more than $5,000. Bigger battery packs like 60 kWh can cost even $10,000 for a new pack from the factory.
Thats why many people go the other route and get battery packs from donor cars. Donor cars could be found at salvage yards. But someone else has probably got them before you. So, he will sell you the battery second-hand. A second-hand battery from a donor car can cost between $2,500 to $3,500 for the 24 kWh, while the 40 kWh can cost between $6,500 to $7,500. Considerably less, compared to the dealership route. But still quite expensive.

We also wrote an entire LEAF guide to battery replacement. While it has some of the same info, it could be helpful to dive a bit deeper.
According to a post in the MyNissanLeaf.com forum, as of Jan 30, 2020, the cost of labor and replacement of a 24 kWh battery in a Nissan Leaf is $5,500. It appears the battery itself would cost $4,500, placing the $/kWh at $187/kWh, which is 36% above the quoted 2020 $137/kWh price.
- According to a 2020 Greencars report, the Nissan Leaf 40 kWh battery costs $5,500 or about $137/kWh, which is right on target for the average 2020 price.
- A 2013 Nissan Leaf owner in Canada reported that a dealership quoted him for $15,000 CAD for a replacement battery.
- Cashcarbuyers reported in Sept 2020
- 30 kWh pack price ranges from $3,500 to $4,500, at most $150/kWh.
- 40 kWh pack price ranged between $6,500 and $7,500, at most $187.5/kWh.
- 62 kWh battery pack is expected to be between $8,500 and $9,500, at most $153/kWh.

The Replacement Battery Costs For These Six Normal Evs Is Staggeringly High
The battery pack is almost the entire cost of the car in some cases. Some are more costly than the car itself.
Chris Rosales, BMW, VW, GM, Hyundai
Old EVs are cheap, and slightly used examples are getting more affordable. But after we saw a battery replacement horror story for a Chevrolet Volt owner last week, we looked into the cost of replacing six different contemporary EV batteries. The news isnt pretty.
The long-term costs of owning EVs are often misunderstood. Even if theyre powered by batteries, electric cars still need brakes, tires, and suspension. And because of the complex chemistry of lithium-ion batteries, these cars have a specific shelf life and degradation compared to internal combustion. Trouble is, engines get cheaper on a long enough timeline and generally can sit around indefinitely. Batteries are in constant decline.
A caveat of this list is the omission of Tesla. The reason is simply because there is no information on true parts cost from Tesla, with only used packs on eBay as a marker. We also looked into labor costs for replacing the batteries, on top of the astronomical battery costs. These change from state to state, but the quotes range from $1200 to $3000 depending on the car. The majority of the cost is parts. Lets start with the humble Chevy Bolt.

- A 2011-2015 Chevy Volt Remanufactured Battery Pack is priced at $6,000 at Greentec Auto. These batteries have 17.1 kWh of capacity, putting this price at $350/kWh in 2021 dollars. Sold with new modules, that same battery pack is priced at $8,000, placing it at $467/kWh in 2021.
- For the 2016-2018 Chevy Volt, battery packs are priced at roughly $3,000 on ebay. These batteries are 18.4 kWh, equating to $163/kWh to $152/kWh.

The Use Operation And Reuse Of Battery Power In Electric Automobiles
Electric vehicles use a motor instead of the internal combustion engines of regular automobiles. So, we know traditional cars run on gas engine. So what powers the electric motors inside EVs? A traction battery pack, mostly lithium-ion, runs the motor inside an EV.
A lithium-ion battery pack consists of the cathode and the anode. The anode stores the lithium in the battery. There is a separator, which is a plastic filter separating these two sides. The electrolyte in the battery carries the lithium ions from the cathode to the anode through the separator.
When the discharge of lithium-ion from the cathode reaches the anode via the electrolyte, it produces the necessary power for the EV. When you plug the battery in for recharging, this whole thing works in reverse. As for the reuses, there is a massive scope in that particular field too. For the time being, these batteries can be directly used in other vehicles. Additionally, these batteries are getting reused as power storage for homes, buildings, or even grid-level solar.
