Cost To Replace An Ford F
Lets start with the Ford F-150 Lightning battery price and its a whopper. However, before we dig in, know thats not the whole story.
Searching Ford parts online, I found pricing for both the extended-range battery and the standard-range battery at my local Ford dealer.
First, the extended-range battery, the one with up to 320 miles of range, is currently priced at $35,960.
Next, the standard-range battery, with 230 miles of range, is currently priced at $28,556.
In both cases, Im using the word currently because we have pretty high inflation at the moment, and tight supply chains make producing these batteries tough, which is artificially raising the prices.
With this said, Id expect battery replacement prices to get even higher in the interim before coming down as the years go by.
Ford Reveals Ev Battery With Up To 131 Kwh Capacity For 2022 F
Ford has confirmed the battery capacities for its all-electric 2022 F-150 Lightning pickup truck. The vehicle will be available with a standard-range battery capacity of 98 kWh and a targeted EPA-estimated range of 230 miles or an extended-range battery that provides 131 kWh, which converts to around 300 miles . These range estimates assume a payload of 1,000 lbs .
The standard-range is the default battery capacity on the lower three models, the Pro, XLT and Lariat. The extended-range battery is available on the XLT and Lariat grades and comes as standard on the top-end Platinum trim.
Another option for the F-150 Lightning is the infotainment system. In the higher end Lariat and Platinum models, Ford uses its 9.6 kW Pro Power System with a 15.5″ touchscreen and SYNC 4A operating system. This is an optional extra for the Pro and XLT grades, which come with a 12″ touchscreen and SYNC 4 as standard.
Both systems allow over-the-air software updates, which the vehicle can receive via it’s built-in modem or Wi-Fi. There are few clear differences between these operating systems, with adaptive dash cards being one of the core additions to SYNC 4A. Another difference between trims recently revealed are the power-folding mirrors, which will only be available for the Lariat and Platinum grades.
How Does The Lightning Battery Pack Compare To Other Electric Vehicles
Without a doubt the Ford Lightnings battery pack is large, however, it is not the biggest on the market. Todays cars are generally being released with larger batteries as they allow for further travel distance, but this only helps up to a certain level as larger batteries generally weigh a lot more. There is a huge variety when it comes to sizes of electric car batteries as some will go less than 100 miles, while others are claiming theirs may reach 400 miles. Below are some more common electric vehicles and their battery sizes.

This is an incomplete list of some electric vehicles that have either been released, in the process of being released or have been announced to be released in the near future. Because almost all of these vehicles are newer, they have much larger batteries than some of the first electric cars, which only had batteries around 32 kWh with only about 100 miles of range. Most of these vehicles are well above 200 miles when it comes to the range, with some pushing past 300 miles when fully charged.
Ford wanted the Lightning to be a real truck and wants it to be able to get any towing or carrying done that a normal truck can do as this is considered that kind of work generally doesnt fit well with electric vehicles.

The Lightning Sets The Bar For Electric Pickup Efficiency
Is the F-150 Lightning good on gas?
The Lightning runs on electricity. It has a 230-mile range with the standard battery pack, and the EPA equivalent of 68 mpg combined. The extended-range pack stretches the Lightning out to 320 miles , and the EPA equivalent of 70 mpg combined. Its a 10, like most other electric vehicles.
In terms of efficiency, it works out to about 2.0 miles per kwh, which is inefficient for an electric vehicle , but about the same as the smaller Rivian R1T. The heavier, more powerful GMC Hummer EV checks in at about 1.54 miles per kwh, upholding the Hummers reputation for inefficiency even in the EV age.
The Lightning charges via a charge port on the drivers side front fender. At its best, on Level 3 DC fast-charging at up to 150 kw, it takes about 45 minutes to charge from 15-80%, with either pack size.
At home, charging times vary based on amperage. On a basic Level 2 240-volt outlet rated at 30 amps, it will take about 15 hours to charge the standard pack from 15% to full, and 20 hours with the larger pack. Ford estimates 13 miles of range per hour of charge. With a 48-amp circuit, the time drops to 10 hours and 13 hours respectively, with about 20 miles of range per hour of charge. On an 80-amp circuit recommended by Ford, the charge times for the extended-range pack drop to 8 hours, or about 30 miles per hour.
With Fords Home Integration System, the Lightning can charge up the house and serve as a backup generator.
What You Get In The Base F
The Ford F-150 Lightning Pro is instantly recognizable because it doesnt feature the signature hood lighting that is standard in other trims. It has a basic grille, LED projector headlamps with dynamic bending and LED signature lighting, 18-inch alloy wheels, and LED tail lamps. Signature LED tailgate lighting is not part of the exterior lighting either.
On the technology front, the base Ford F-150 Lightning includes a 12-inch digital instrument cluster and the older, SYNC 4 infotainment system with a smaller, 12-inch landscape touchscreen, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot, navigation, and wireless updates. The front occupants get vinyl bucket seats with two-way manual adjustment. The capacity of the onboard charger is 2.4 kW, and there are multiple 120 V outlets: two in the cab, two in the bed, and four in the front trunk.
The Ford Co-Pilot 360 2.0 set of driver assistant systems in the base F-150 Lightning includes Pre-Collision Assist with Automatic Emergency Braking , BLIS with Cross-Traffic Alert, Lane-Keeping System with Lane-Keeping Alert, automatic high-beam, backup camera, rear parking sensors, Reverse Brake Assist, and Post-Collision Braking.

Shoppers might consider it over hybrid versions of the F-150, but its the only electric work truck on the market for now. What’s new for the 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning?
The truck is new but the design is familiar. The standard crew cab and 5-foot-6 bed carry over from the F-150 so owners can transfer accessories between gas and electric trucks, or just to feel familiar despite the electric propulsion system that sits below it.

Xlt Lariat And Platinum Models

For those who want something more than a work truck, Ford will offer three optional trim levels, starting with the XLT, which used to be the top-of-the-line designation years ago but is now just a half step above the entry level Pro. It will come with a 98 kWh battery, but a larger 131 kWh battery will be an option. Like the Pro, it is limited to a 12 touchscreen and comes with the 2.4 kW ProPower Onboard system, upgradable to 9.6 kW. Range is estimated by the EPA at 300 miles.
Next up is the Lariat, which comes standard with the smaller battery but offers the larger battery as an option. It features the 9.6 kW ProPower Onboard system and a 15.5 touchscreen running Fords upgraded Sync 4A system. The top of the line Platinum is only available with the 131 kWh battery, 15.5 inch touchscreen, and 9.6 kW ProPower Onboard system. It will come with larger 22 wheels and tires that will look terrific in the parking lot at at the country club but reduce range to 280 miles. Tick all the boxes on the order sheet and a fully loaded Platinum F-150 Lightning will lighten your wallet by nearly $80,000.

Battery size has become one of the most important parts of electrical vehicles. Their ability to be charged quickly while also having a large capacity is essential for electric vehicles to advance and become a more common technology. Ford is currently working on the F150 Lightning, which is planned to be released sometime in 2022 to those who have pre-ordered the vehicle. A Big Cab Big Frunk And Innovative Features Extend The Cargo And Comfort Of The Lightning
Unlike other full-size trucks, the F-150 Lightning comes in only one configuration, a roomy crew cab with a short 5-foot-6 bed. It has all of the amenities and comfort of the F-150 crew cab, even if the front seat bottoms arent as plush as rivals, plus a massive and innovative front trunk in place of an engine. The large cab, roomy rear seats, and dual cargo holds in the frunk and bed each earn it a point to an 8.
Vinyl covers the manually adjusted front seats like a good old fashioned truck, but cloth power seats are only a step above on the XLT. A step above, the Lariats seats come with heating, cooling, power, and memory. Massagers come standard on the Platinum grade, and they have a full recline option. Like the gas model, a stowable console gear shifter and fold-out work table is an option.
Other clever storage options include flip-up rear seats with a long lockable storage unit for expensive outdoor gear, and Ford fit the same bed as gas models so F-150 owners can interchange their accessories. In addition to ties downs and bed lighting, each Lightning has an onboard generator running from 2.4 kw to 9.6 kw, and the gate can fold down into a work surface with cup holders, clamp pockets, a bottle opener, and ruler. A retractable tailgate step with pull handle is also available.
Several Different Kwh Ratings Of The F150 Lightning Battery
There are two main battery ratings for the new Ford Lightning. The Ford Lightning has the standard range vehicle and their extended-range vehicle, similar to the Mustang Mach-es choices. Their battery ratings are not the same, however, the Ford Lightnings standard battery rating is about the same size as the extended Mustang Mach-es battery.
The standard battery is available in different trims, but not the platinum trim as it comes stock with the extended-range battery. The standard battery is expected to have about 230 miles of range that comes from a 98 kWh battery. The extended-range battery is an optional feature that can be purchased when you order a Ford Lightning in any trim level. The extended-range package will give you a 131 kWh battery that is capable of 300 miles of range when fully charged.

These batteries also charge at different speeds depending on what charger you use to charge them. The standard range battery will be faster to charge at lower charging speeds, such as when you use the mobile charger or a Ford Connected Charge Station. For some chargers, such as the Ford Charge Station Pro and DC fast charger, the extended-range battery will actually charge slightly faster. Knowing these charging times will allow you to make the best decision when it comes to charging whatever battery needs to be charged.

Aside From The Lighting And Badging The Lightning Looks Like An F
Is the F-150 Lightning a good-looking truck?
It looks like a truck, feels like a truck, and has the same footprint and design of any other F-150, except for the front lightbar, taillights, wheels, and badging. It earns a 7, same as the gas model, with a point for its familiar and solid exterior, and a point for its functional rectangular interior.
From the windshield back, the Lightning looks the same as the F-150 because it is the same, despite riding on a wider, stronger frame. The standard crew cab has a front window step and a crease in the rockers that span 18- to 22-inch wheel designs unique to the Lightning. Up front a single lightbar conceals a frunk with a hood that dips all the way down to the bumper and opens like a treasure chest of space.
Inside, theres virtually no distinguishing the Lightning from other F-150s. Blocky shapes fill the dash like a horizontal Tetris game, with a 12.0-inch touchscreen taking the center square like Paul Lynde, and audio and climate dials below it. The available 15.5-inch touchscreen subsumes those dials and looks more slapped onto the dash than integrated into it. Otherwise, its an F-150, split glovebox, American flag emblems, and all.

Ford announced only that there will be two battery/range versions:
- Standard-Range Battery with expected EPA range of 230 miles
- Extended-Range Battery with expected EPA range of 300 miles
Luckily, the manufacturer has revealed charging times from 15 to 100% state-of-charge for a few power levels, which enables us to make some calculations and estimate the battery capacity.

The Lightnings Weight And Driver
How safe is the Ford-F-150 Lightning?
The IIHS and the NHTSA have yet to weigh in on the Lightning, but its estimated 6,600-lb weight should protect it in many crashes. The standard safety features help it avoid crashes with other vehicles as well, thanks to automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, active lane control, blind-spot monitors, rear parking sensors, and automatic high beams.
Options include a surround-view camera system as helpful for off-roading as it is for parking, adaptive cruise control down to a stop, and emergency braking when turning at intersections. Fords limited hands-free driving system, BlueCruise, works well on mapped divided highways to give drivers a break, but it can get confused at ramps and merges, and has a tendency to pinball in the lane until settled.
