What Is The Lifespan Of The Main Hybrid Battery

Honda Accord Hybrid Battery : Charging and Discharging

HL7 said:Does anyone know or can point me to a link regarding how long the main Hybrid battery should last ? I’m not referring to the 12v battery.I have about 165K on my 2010 Honda Pilot. I expect to keep the HAH for roughly that same amount of time/mileage. I don’t want to shell out $5K to replace the main battery after 100K miles. I know Hybrid battery technology in general is a lot better today than 10 years ago, but I haven’t found anything specifically for the 2018 HAH.

Faulty Starter Or Alternator

If your Honda Accord Hybrid battery dies, there are a few things that may happen depending on the cause of the failure. A faulty starter or alternator may be to blame in some cases and can be fixed relatively easily by a mechanic.

In other cases, you might need to replace the entire hybrid battery pack due to extensive damage or malfunctioning cells. Finally, if nothing seems to help and the car wont start at all despite multiple attempts, it might be time for a new Honda Accord Hybrid battery.

Its important not to overlook this issue as it could lead to greater complications down the road such as stranded motorists or damaged property.

What Is A Hybrid High Voltage Battery

Hybrid vehicles which use internal combustion engines and electronic motors must have a storage location for electricity when it is not being used to propel the vehicle. Whether the system uses the ICE and brakes to charge the battery or a combination of the brakes and a power plug, the high voltage electrical battery is necessary to store the high voltage needed to run the large electric motor.

Can A Honda Hybrid Run Without The Battery

A Honda hybrid vehicle requires a hybrid battery in order to run properly- this is different from traditional gasoline and diesel engines that dont require batteries.

Hybrid batteries must be replaced periodically, which can be expensive. Replacing the hybrid battery on a Honda can be costly, so its important for owners to keep up with regular maintenance tasks such as oil changes and tune-ups to ensure the car runs smoothly.

Vehicle owners must invest in new hybrids when their old ones start to wear out otherwise, they may experience decreased fuel efficiency and performance issues related to the aging of their engine parts. New hybrids come at an initial cost, but over time they will pay off by extending the life of your vehicle.

When Replacement Is On The Horizon

According to the New York Times, federal regulations call for hybrid vehicles to provide a minimum of a 100,000-mile, 8-year battery warranty, though some state regulations are even more strict. However, driver habits can have significant impact on battery life. If your car is less than 5 years old or youve chalked up fewer than 100,000 miles, you probably dont have to start worrying about battery replacement yet.

Edmunds points out that most automakers claim their hybrids battery packs will last a good 10 years or more. Edmunds adds that there are a great many hybrid taxis in large metropolitan areas that have logged well beyond 150,000 miles without replacing the battery.

But according to the Times, once youve passed the 5-year mark or youve racked up more than 100,000, you probably should begin budgeting for battery replacement.

What Are The Symptoms Related To A Bad Battery

The battery is considered dead when there isn’t enough charge to start the engine or run electrical components.

Normally, the first sign is dim lighting in the interior of the vehicle, and when you try to start it, the engine may crank slowly, or not at all. A very rapid clicking noise is normally heard if there is any charge left in the battery, but in many cases the vehicle will be completely unresponsive.

If the battery is losing charge while driving the vehicle, the battery warning light will illuminate, and the engine may stall.

However, I value fewer trips to the gas station, reduced maintenance , and creating fewer emissions. The environmental factor may be offset by the eventual cost of hybrid battery disposal. And oh yeah – having to have produced all of the batteries in the first place, in addition to the regular drivetrain… I dunno. Not sure a mathematical formula will answer this. You either do it because you want to, or don’t.

What Are Car Batteries And How Do They Work

Battery Replacement 2003-2017 Honda Accord

A car battery is an energy storage device that relies on a chemical reaction within the battery to produce electricity. The stored electrical energy is used to initially operate the starter motor, ignition system, and fuel system on your vehicle. Once your car engine is running, the alternator supplies the electricity needed for all vehicle systems and charges the battery to replace the electric energy used when starting a car.

Most electric vehicles have a traction battery which is in addition to the standard 12 volt battery that is used to start the car engine. Traction batteries also convert chemical energy to supply electrical energy but operate at higher voltages and often are monitored by the PCM .

Avoid Costly And Inferior Replacements

Your first reaction when the integrated motor assist warning light or other indicators of battery problems begin to appear, may be to take your vehicle to the dealer for a battery replacement. But unless your battery is under warranty, you could end up paying more than necessary and may not even get the highest quality replacement battery.

Many hybrid owners are surprised to learn that their dealer is more likely than an aftermarket supplier to provide a refurbished battery instead of a new one. Just as surprising, you shouldnt expect a dealers refurbished battery to cost you less than replacing your hybrids old battery with new battery cells.

How Do I Replace The Battery In My Honda

A confident do-it-your-selfer can replace a vehicle battery. Start by checking your vehicle owners manual for the batterys proper size and location. Find the positive and negative posts. The positive post will have a red plastic cover over it. Look for a + sign stamped onto the battery or printed on a nearby label. Loosen the negative terminal bolt and remove the cable. Be sure not to touch the positive post. Once you loosen the bolt, use a terminal puller to remove the cable. Repeat the sequence with the positive post.

Now remove the clamp or retaining system that keeps the battery in place. Carefully lift out the old battery. Look for any corrosion on the cables and remove it with a wire brush or terminal cleaning tool.

Drop in the new battery so that the positive post lines up with the red cable. Secure it with the battery retaining clamp that you removed earlier. If the battery has anti-corrosion washers, put them in place now and use a thin layer of anti-corrosion grease to prevent buildup. Tighten the positive cable and then do it all over again with the negative black cable.

Make sure the battery is secure and congratulations: youve replaced your cars battery!

Hybrids: The High Cost Of Low Batteries

As I got into my car at my local YMCA recently, I noticed a Prius parked next to me with a For Sale sign in the window. It read: “’05 Prius, $14,999, 97,000 miles.” This beige Prius looked to be in good condition. And with gas prices topping $4 a gallon, it certainly seemed like a good deal for a gas-electric hybrid that gets 48 mpg in the city and would cost about $23,000 new. But one question nagged at me: as the odometer approaches the century mark, how much life is left in this car’s electric battery? And then an even scarier question occurred to me: if the battery runs out of juice, how much would it cost to replace it? Those concerns short-circuited any interest I had. So I put the key in the ignition of my far less fuel-efficient car and drove off.

When hybrids first hit the road in 2000, there was plenty of fear-mongering, especially here in Detroit, where the Big Three were drunk on cheap gas and big SUV sales. Back then Motown execs warned darkly that rescue workers could be electrocuted trying to save trapped motorists who crashed in these high-voltage contraptions. And those giant batteries could cost $10,000 or $15,000 to replace once they ran down, maybe after 100,000 miles or less.
