Why Agm Battery Products Last Longer Than Other Batteries On The Market

How to charge and maintain deep cycle AGM batteries with Craig from Australian Direct

Leaks can cause batteries not to last as long as you were expecting them to. However, AGM technology can prevent a leak from developing, which can increase the lifespan of our products. Thats because our AGM batteries use an absorbent glass mat to wick battery acid to the plates, which means that there is no reservoir of acid that can be spilt if the casing gets cracked.

Cycle Life: Dont Run Your Batteries Into The Ground Every Time

All deep cycle batteries regardless of chemistry will have a set amount of charge cycles in which it is rated to perform at its optimum level. If you take a look at figure 1 below you will see the cycle life performance and expectancy for our EVH12390 – a 12V 39AH U1 battery.

The first thing that you will notice is that there are three separate possible cycle lifespans shown on the graph each with a different depth of discharge. For a deep cycle battery the depth of discharge will be how much of the reserve capacity has been spent or taken from the battery. So the first line on the graph going from left to right reflects a 100% discharge of the battery every single cycle. In other words the deep cycle battery is run all the way down and charged all the way up for every cycle until it reaches the end of life expectancy at the 300 cycle mark. We always recommend to all of our customers looking to maximize their battery lifespan to not run their batteries all the way down every time if it can be helped. The less capacity used in the battery prior to charging back up will greatly improve the cycle life of the battery which is depicted in Figure 1 by the second and third lines.

How Does An Agm Battery Work

An AGM battery is a type of lead-acid battery that uses a fiberglass mat to hold the electrolyte in place. The electrolyte, which is a mixture of sulfuric acid and water, is absorbed into the fiberglass mat, which is made of a very porous material.

This design allows the AGM battery to be sealed and maintenance-free, as the electrolyte is contained within the fiberglass mat and cannot leak or spill.

When an AGM battery is discharging, the sulfuric acid in the electrolyte reacts with the lead plates in the battery to form lead sulfate by releasing electrons and generating electrical energy. This leaves a diluted solution of sulfuric acid.

When the battery is charging, the charge current cause the lead sulfate to disassociate into Lead, and sulfur is recombined with hydrogen ions in the electrolyte to form a concentrated sulfuric acid.

The fiberglass mat helps to evenly distribute the electrolyte throughout the battery, ensuring that all of the lead plates are able to participate in the chemical reactions and maximize the batterys energy output.

Due to their sealed nature, the hydrogen gas that is released during charging is recombined within the battery. This recombination ensures the battery does not loose water and therefore does not require regular toping up with water. This makes AGM batteries maintenance free.

Volt Gel Or Agm Batteries

If kept in a charged state when unused, the common lifespan of a 12-volt Gel or AGM battery is up to six years. After five or six years of float voltage at an average ambient temperature of 25 ºC, the battery still retains 80 % of its original capacity. Higher average temperatures will shorten the lifespan of the battery. The number of charge and discharge cycles of a 12-volt battery is strongly correlated to its structure and quality. Mastervolts 12-volt Gel batteries can take around 500 full cycles of being discharged down to 20 % and charged back to full capacity.

Most manufacturers consider batteries to be spent at a remaining capacity of 80 %. This does not, however, mean that the battery has to be replaced immediately. For example, the battery can still be used if only 50 % of the battery capacity is actually required. It is therefore not necessary to replace the battery after six years or 500 full cycles. An average use of seven years is perfectly normal for 12-volt Gel or AGM batteries.

How To Maintain A Healthy Agm Battery

Taking care of your car battery is very easy, and you can follow some helpful tips provided here to make sure it provides you with a longer serviceable period.

  • The most important thing is regular maintenance of your battery. Apart from the technical inspection and health check, it also includes regular cleaning and external maintenance.
  • Make sure you only charge your AGM battery with the charger that is suggested by the manufacturer of the battery. Different types of AGM batteries have different recommended chargers, which differ in terms of voltage capacity.
  • In the case of lead-acid batteries, you should avoid partial charge as it can potentially decrease the ability of the battery to hold a full charge.
  • Lastly, you should consider making some changes in your driving style if you are experiencing frequent battery-related problems. Also, make sure you check out your vehicle too in case there is a problem with battery-related components.

Proper Charging And Storage Practices

The number one reason for early deep cycle battery failure is sulfation. Sulfation occurs when the battery is left in a discharged state for a brief to a long period of time. Essentially what happens is that when the battery is being drained the lead sulfate converts to a stable crystalline which then deposits on the negative plates of the battery. This process is reversed when the battery goes into a charge cycle. The longer the battery sits in a discharged state with these crystalline deposits, the harder they become on the plate which in turn makes them more difficult to remove.

The solution to prevent sulfation from occurring is to keep your deep cycle battery in a charged state. That means charging your deep cycle battery after every use. If you have an application that is stored during the winter months – i.e. boats and electric scooters – then ideally you would have an automatic battery maintainer to keep them topped off until the next season. If you do not have a battery maintainer then it is recommended to pull the batteries out of storage once every two months and place them on charge. Deep cycle batteries are capable of retaining a charge for roughly three months of inactivity, putting them on charge every two months will ensure that sulfation does not have an opportunity to set in.

Agm Vs Flooded Batteries

What is better AGM or gel battery?

Today, most companies operate their vehicles, workplace equipment or renewable energy systems using rechargeable batteries. The most commonly used is the lead acid battery. This mature technology that’s known to be reliable, durable, and can cost effective. However, under the lead acid battery category there are many different types to be aware of. In this article we will talk about the differences between Absorbed Glass Mat ” rel=”nofollow”> AGM) and Flooded batteries.

Absorbed Glass Mat and wet cell or flooded batteries are both considered lead batteries and contain an electrolyte solution which causes a chemical reaction and produces electrons. These batteries are recharged when put in contact with a reverse current. But, given the way they are designed, they each have their own pros and cons and these variations should be considered before use.

Agm Battery: The Compromise Between Gel And Lead

AGM stands for “Absorbed Glass Mat”. As the name suggests, AGM batteries have a gel electrolyte and a glass fiber separator between the plates. A hybrid version of the lead-acid and gel batteries, AGM batteries have become increasingly popular in the marine sector over the last 10 years. They offer an excellent compromise between these two technologies: more efficient than lead-acid batteries and less expensive than gel batteries. For the same weight, an AGM battery offers almost twice the power of a lead-acid battery . They also have a longer life . On average, AGM batteries are 30% more expensive than lead-acid batteries, but they are relatively easy to find on the market. On the other hand, it should be noted that some models do not support total discharge. It is thus advised not to exceed 80% of discharge, in order not to damage it. Price: 330 euros for 150A.

Do Agm Batteries Last Longer Than Lead Acid

Yes. AGM batteries are a type of lead acid battery that lasts longer than traditional flooded lead acid batteries.

Gel batteries, another type of lead acid battery, also last longer than flooded lead acid batteries. You can expect to get 300-500 discharge cycles from an AGM battery and 500 to 1,000 cycles from a gel battery.

AGM batteries are best used in starting applications. Youll most commonly find them in vehicles like cars, trucks, RVs, boats, and other motorized vehicles. They provide intense bursts of power as a starting battery. They can be used for energy storage applications as well, but their cost and poor performance make them a lesser choice for these applications.

A Comprehensive Guide On Agm Batteries

How Many Amps Does A 12v Motorcycle Battery Have

An AGM battery, also known as Absorbent Glass Mat battery is a type of rechargeable battery that uses a fiberglass mat to hold the electrolyte in place, instead of traditional flooded lead-acid batteries that use a liquid electrolyte.

This design allows the AGM battery to be sealed and maintenance-free, making it a popular choice for a variety of applications, such as backup power for homes, telecommunications equipment, and electric vehicles.

Whats The Difference Between An Agm And Flooded Lead

This absorbent mat design is the primary difference between an AGM and a flooded lead-acid battery. Traditional lead-acid batteries simply use lead plates suspended in the electrolyte solution while the liquid flows freely around them.

As mentioned before, an AGM battery is still a lead-acid battery, just in a different design. These batteries still suffer many of the same problems that traditional flooded lead batteries have but do offer a few benefits.

Is A Gel Cell Battery An Agm Battery

The AGM battery is often confused with the gel battery since both are sealed battery types.

However, where the AGM battery uses a glass mat to hold its electrolyte, the gel battery uses a silica agent to suspend its electrolyte in gel form.

The gel cell battery is rarely used in cars as they dont do well as a starter battery. Its also very sensitive to overcharging, and the gel can be damaged if this happens.

Agm Batteries Vs Lithium Batteries

While AGM batteries have some significant advantages over typical flooded lead-acid batteries, they dont compare at all to Lithium-Ion Batteries in storage applications. Lithium batteries have some major upsides compared to all lead-acid batteries. Theyre a favorite for their lower weight and higher energy efficiency, the ability to fully discharge them, better operation in extreme temperatures, and longer life overall.

The only application where an AGM battery will currently outperform lithium is in engine starting applications. They are good at providing huge amounts of current for short periods of time as long as they are recharged immediately.

Controlled Usage Of The Electrolytes

In lead-acid batteries, liquid sulfuric acid is used as the electrolyte. After regular usage, the dilution of the sulfuric acid gets reduced. And furthermore, you have to fill the cell chambers with distilled water to maintain the dilution of the electrolyte.

But, the AGM battery is completely liquid-free. A fiberglass mat is used to keep the electrolyte completely absorbed within. The mechanism is like the sponge absorbing the liquids. This form of electrolyte reduces power wastage and ensures the controlled flow of electricity.

In the AGM cells, the electrochemical reaction takes place only when necessary. Besides, no maintenance is required to keep the cells flooded on a regular basis. Due to this, the battery experiences better longevity.

  • What’s the Difference Between AGM and Regular Battery?
  • Are AGM Batteries the Same as Valve Regulated Lead Acid Batteries?
  • Are Flooded and Sealed Lead Acid Batteries the same?
  • How is a Lithium Battery different from an AGM battery?

Before discovering the answers, we must understand that there are mainly four kinds of batteries on the market. Each of them was named after their unique battery technology.

  • Flooded: the battery uses lead plates suspended in the electrolyte and large separators. The liquid flows freely inside the casing.
  • AGM: a battery type using a fiberglass mat between the positive and negative lead plates to absorb and hold the batterys acid – the liquid is hold still.
  • Gel: a battery type keeping the electrolyte suspended in gel form, so the battery is spill-proof.
  • Lithium Iron Phosphate: a type of battery that uses lithium iron phosphate

Technically, the four types of solar batteries can also be divided into two categories, the lead-acid and the lithium-iron phosphate. Among them, flooded lead-acid batteries, AGM batteries and gel batteries belong to lead-acid batteries.

So which type of batteries suit your needs best? When capacity is your first consideration and cost is the least thing to consider, lithium battery is surely your top choice.
