What Is The Ampere Rating Of A Car Battery

How Long to Charge a Car Battery [with Any Amp Charger]

The amp rating of a car battery represents the current storage capacity of the battery. The larger the battery, the higher the ampere rating. The amp rating of a car battery varies from 550A to 1000A. Note that the amp rating is different from the amp hour rating that most batteries come labeled with.

The amp rating of a car battery depends on several factors starting from internal chemistry to reserve capacity. Therefore, you have to understand the specifications of a car battery before understanding and measuring the amp rating for a car battery.

Buying Guide To Replace Your Current Car Battery

When you want to replace your car battery you should consider the following:

1) If you are replacing an old battery that has been sitting for a while then you may be able to get away with a lower capacity battery. This means that if you do not use the vehicle regularly or drive very far each day, you can go for a smaller battery.

2) You should also check the condition of the battery before buying one. If the battery has been stored in a garage or shed for a long time, then there could be corrosion on the terminals which would reduce its life expectancy.

3) Finally, make sure that the battery is fully charged before installing it into your car. If you dont charge the battery properly, it wont last as long as it should.

4) When you buy a new battery from us, we include a free installation kit so that you can easily install the battery yourself.

How Many Car Battery Amp Hours Does My Rv Need

Car Battery amp hours: In general, most car batteries have between 40 and 65 amp hours. Typically, youll see this as Ah on a battery. Amp hours tell you how much amperage a car battery outputs in one hour.

Recreational vehicles are battery consumers, and most of them also have access to modern conveniences for more comfortable travel. With so many differences in escape, RV consumers have some demand for electricity, and in many cases, a lot. You want to get a rough idea of how many car battery amp hours your RV needs.

Batteries in recreational vehicles use the lead-acid concept. They are made of lead and lead oxide sheets immersed in 36% sulfuric acid and 64% water as electrolytes. They have several cells in series, each producing about 2.1 volts. A 12-volt lead-acid battery produces a total output voltage of 12.6 volts, while six batteries are connected in series.

Lead-acid batteries have the potential to be used technically to store electricity rather than make it. Therefore, the size of the lead plate, as well as the amount of electrolyte, determines how much electricity the battery can store.

Its worth noting that to estimate daily amp usage, hours of use and amps per hour are required. Consumers of such vehicles will need to generate and store electricity in order to benefit from their use as needed.

How Many Amps Do You Need To Charge A Car Battery

Often, drivers dont even realize their batteries have amps until its time to charge them. Then theyre looking at different battery chargers trying to determine which one is best for them.

So, how many amps do you need to charge a dead car battery? The truth is that even a 1-amp car battery will charge a completely dead battery. All the number of amps changes is how long it will take.

However, while more amps will charge a battery faster, its always best to stick with as few amps as possible as long as you have the time. Thats because the more amps you use to charge the battery, the more youll reduce its usable life. So while its a minor impact if youre only doing it once or twice, the more it happens, the more it will reduce the batterys lifespan!

How Many Heaters Can You Run On A 15 Amp Circuit

How Many Amps Is A Car Battery?

Some heaters are rated for 500,1000, and 1500 watts for low, medium and high A 15 amp circuit should be able to easily handle 2 of these heaters on 500 watts and one could even be on 1000 watts Originally Answered: Can a 15amp handle two space heater on low?

The standard for most household circuits are rated either 15 amps or 20 amps An important note to remember is that circuit breakers can only handle about 80% of their overall amperage That means a 15-amp circuit breaker can handle around 12-amps and a 20-amp circuit breaker can handle about 16 amps.

What Are Reserve Capacity Minutes

The reserve minutes represent the number of minutes that a fully charged battery can sustain 25 amps of current before its voltage falls to 10.5 volts for a 12-volt battery. For example, if a battery has 120 minutes of reserve capacity, it can handle the 25-amp load for two hours. Nevertheless, a battery is not supposed to be discharged more than 50%, so the 120-minute reserve capacity has a limit of one hour.

How Many Amps Can A Car Battery Supply

Googling this hasn’t given me much information. I’ve heard numbers ranging from 30A to 300A.

My question isn’t how many amps a car battery does supply in normal operation, it’s how many amps I would measure if a car battery is shorted across a multimeter .

  • 7\$\begingroup\$Look for the “cold cranking current” rating for the battery – this won’t be the maximum current the battery can deliver, but is the minimum current the battery is suposed to be able to deliver when starting a car on a cold day.\$\endgroup\$Jul 14, 2016 at 23:58
  • 2\$\begingroup\$In normal operation it should supply zero or less. The alternator should be powering everything.\$\endgroup\$Jul 15, 2016 at 0:07
  • 1\$\begingroup\$exploding multimeter is likely outcome if it’s one of the ones with the 10A range unfused. as Mr Fields says further down some thousands of amps depending on the size and condition of the battery.\$\endgroup\$Jul 15, 2016 at 1:29
  • 3\$\begingroup\$Limiting current will be meter leads, internal shunt resistance and plug in connections to meter. The meter WILL blow fuse or halt and catch fire . A decent hunk of copper wire – say the cable in good jumper leads terminated PROPERLY to rugged clamp on connectors and short cable length will give several times the battery CCA rating for a very short period. Car batteries usually have CCA in the 300-600A range so over 1000A possible with a solid enough cable and terminations.\$\endgroup\$

How Long Should It Take To Charge A 12 Volt Car Battery

A 12-volt battery will most likely take 12 to 24 hours to charge completely. There are times when recharging can make your car battery too hot. In which case, you have to stop charging for a while.

Typically, slow charging is the best option for car batteries. Also, if it gets hot, it should not be more than 125 Fahrenheit.

There Might Be Better Options

how many amps does a car battery have & how many ampere in 12 volt

More commonly, car batteries are rated in CCA which just means how many amps then can deliver at a freezing temperature for about 30 seconds without dropping the voltage too much. Car batteries are designed to put out a LOT of current all at once, then recharge while your car is running, not discharge slowly down to nothing then be recharged like other common batteries.

Lead acid batteries are really tough and versatile, and they will work for this purpose if they are rated for the power you need. A better option might be lithium batteries, many of which are designed to deliver a high continuous current load.

You also have to remember that car batteries see a high voltage drop under load. They are typically charged up to around 14V and can drop as low as 7.2 during extreme current usage. Without a voltage vs current chart, you would have to measure the voltage across your batteries during the expected current draw to know what to expect. The voltage will also drop over time as the charge depletes. Ensure your motors can handle this potential range of source voltage.

36 – 46.2 AH 46.2 – 58.8 AH 58.8 – 111

This is the chart I came up with after I studied the charging time data provided by Schumacher, a battery charger manufacturer.

In their charts, they give the estimated charging times for different types of batteries based on different amps being delivered from the chargers.

As you can see from the chart, the first sets of batteries are rated in AH but not the ones from the cars and trucks which are appropriately rates in CCA or RC.

Using a little logic, I decided to find out how they got the numbers for the batteries that use AH and then apply the same math to the batteries that use CCA or RC .

I was pleased to find out that Schumacher factors in a 20% inefficiency when charging , and they applied that to every value on their chart.

So, lets take a quick example.

For the battery with a 32AH rating, we can see that 16AH need to be replaced since the chart indicates that these times are based on a 50% discharge.

So, if we take 16 amp hours and divide it by 10, we get 1.6 and we quickly see thats not adding up to the 2 amps being provided by the charger in the chart.

Now, if we take 2 amps from the charger for 10 hours, we should replenish 20AH. Its taking 10 hours, or 20AH to replace 16AH in this battery.

16AH / 20AH = 0.8 Efficiency.

So: 16AH / 0.8 / 2 Amps = 10 hours.

What Are Amp Hours

Amp hour is the rating used to tell consumers how much amperage a battery can provide for exactly one hour. In small batteries such as those used in personal vaporizers, or standard AA sized batteries, the amp hour rating is usually given in milli-amp hours, or . For large batteries, the rating is abbreviated as Ah. Most deep cycle batteries will tell you the Ah rating at multiple C ratings. The C rating tells you how many amp hours the battery can provide for a very specific period of time. For instance, at C/5 a battery might safely provide 26.8 amp hours. This means that is supplies 26.8 amps in the duration of 5 hours without dropping off. Meanwhile, the same battery may safely provide 36 amp hours for a period of 100 hours. Depending on the amount of use you intend to get out of your battery , you will want to compare amp hours for different C ratings. However, if you arent sure which C rating to use, it is best to go with the C/20 because it is the middle ground and will give you a general sense of battery performance.

How Long Does It Take An Alternator To Fully Charge A Battery

The batterys capacity and state of charge will determine how long it takes the alternator to fully recharge a car battery. A recently over-discharged battery can be recharged in less than an hour using an alternator, while a cold battery needs a little longer to recharge. In order to get the best estimate, you should let the battery sit idle for several hours.

The alternator powers the battery while the engine is running and continually charges the battery. If the battery is flat, it can take an alternator from thirty minutes to an hour to fully recharge the battery. The faster the engine RPM, the faster the alternator will spin its rotor, producing a higher voltage.

The alternators voltage output depends on the RPM of the engine, and the amount of electrical accessories that are connected to the vehicle. By reducing the load on the alternator, you can ensure that the alternator will focus solely on charging the battery.

Mesuring Amperage In Car Battery System

I recently bought a van that has a starting and an auxillary battery, who ever installed it didn’t isolate it from the starting battery. I’m planning on installing a simple switch to isolate it, but I need to know how many amps it needs to be rated for.

How can I find this out? I have a multi- meter, but worry that the amperage may be high enough to blow it even unfused if I connect it in series between the aux battery and the incoming + lead.

  • mkeithAug 6, 2017 at 21:48
  • \$\begingroup\$You may want to consider a relay which connects the aux battery to the car’s system for charging when the engine is running and disconnects when the engine stops to save the starter battery from discharging.\$\endgroup\$

You are right to be cautious. The big lead-acid batteries can give out hundreds of amps.

Figure 1. Battery isolator or master switch.

A battery isolator is made for this task. The battery negative lead is disconnected from the battery, the end with the bolt slid onto the post and the original lead-clamp connected to the other end. You can just see in the photo the insulating layer peeping out at the rear terminal. Screwing down the green knob connects both halves together with a large contact area to prevent heating.

Your local auto parts supplier will have them.

Back to the question:

I have a multi-meter, but worry that the amperage may be high enough to blow it even unfused if I connect it in series between the aux battery and the incoming + lead.

Does A 1500 Watt Heater Need Its Own Circuit

Space heaters can range from 400 to 1500 watts, but a good rule of thumb is that the maximum watts per outlet should never exceed 1500 watts In other words, yes, your 1500-watt heater needs its own circuit.

There are solar panels that absorb and produce 100-watts, and others 300-watts So, to run a water heater that uses up to 1500-watts, you need 15×100-watts or 15×300-watts solar panels.
