Which Should You Buy
In every other respectCPU, design, charging performance, 5Gthe iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 Pro are the same. Focusing on the differences has a way of really making the iPhone 13 Pro seem a lot better, but you should consider whether you really care about those features or not. If most of the features dont seem like the sort of things you care deeply about, youre just throwing away up to $200 for no good reason.

YouTuber Mrwhosetheboss performed a battery life test that involved all these models. Last year, he completed a similar test for all the iPhones in Apples fall 2021 lineup. Its those tests that highlighted the impressive battery performance of the iPhone 13 Pro Max.
Mrwhosetheboss then compared the iPhone 13 Pro Max against the Galaxy S21 Ultra and the Galaxy S22 Ultra in other tests. The iPhone crushed Samsungs phones in those battery life tests.
Thats why his iPhone 14 battery life test is relevant for the state of the iPhone market. It uses the same principles, which makes it as objective as possible. All the iPhones are brand new, so battery health is at 100% across the board. They run the same suite of apps and games in the same order.
Therefore, each iPhone has to go through the same tasks. Some are more intensive, requiring more energy, while others are simpler.
Also, all iPhones have the same settings. They have the same screen brightness and sound volume. And all of them have the same connectivity options turned on.
With that in mind, here are the results of this iPhone 14 battery life test comparison. Again, the Plus wasnt part of the comparison, but the YouTuber estimated battery life for the unreleased 6.7-inch device based on the performance of the other phones:

A Fast Processor And Long Battery Life
It was hard to make the 13 Pro or 13 Pro Max slow down during our testing. We could be switching Focus modes, have upward of 40 applications open in the background and do all this while a FaceTime call was running on top. We had no issues running applications like Slack, Trello, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, TikTok, Outlook, Word, Photoshop Express, Pixelmator, Catalyst Black, RFS and all the preinstalled ones.
You just wont see drastic improvements over the 12 Mini, 12, 12 Pro or 12 Pro Max an image export might finish a second or two faster, and games will open up about three seconds faster for larger titles. They all feel very seamless, but the gains are more evident with an iPhone 11 or older, especially with intensive tasks.
One area with a more significant leap is with battery life. Prior to launch, the company promised that the 13 Pro would be an hour and a half longer than the 12 Pro, and the 13 Pro Max would last two and a half hours longer than the 12 Pro Max. Thanks to its new A15 Bionic chipset, the iPhone 13 Pro Max is ridiculously fast and grabs the title of worlds fastest phone. I got totally lost in the Warp Drive racing game, which delivers fast frame rates and silky smooth action even as you zoom around the track.
And I also got a kick out of Seek, which flexes the iPhone 13 Pro Maxs machine learning muscles by instantly identifying several plants around my abode, from coleus to new guinea impatiens.
In terms of benchmarks, the iPhone 13 Pro Max once again destroys the Android competition. In Geekbench 5, which measures overall performance, the iPhone 13 Pro Max notched a multi-core score of 4,549 and a single-core score of 1,720. The Galaxy S21 Ultra hit 3,440 and 1,123, respectively, while the iPhone 12 Pro Max reached 4,111 and 1,603.
Interestingly, the iPhone 13 scored a slightly lower 4,436/1,668, which we think could be due to the Pro Max having more RAM.
You should expect a graphics boost on the iPhone 13 Pro Max, as it vaulted ahead of the competition on the 3DMark Wild Life unlimited test. It registered a frame rate of 68.4 frames per second, compared to 54 fps for the iPhone 12 Pro Max and 34 fps for the Galaxy S21 Ultra.

The iPhone 14 has gotten a small bump in battery over the iPhone 13, but in our testing, this didn’t make too much of a difference. You can still get between five and six hours of screen time per charge, which is a full day of standard usage with a comfortable buffer.
Iphone 14 Could Have Even Better Battery Life
While the iPhone 13’s battery life is already quite impressive given the smaller battery, Apple is poised to make things even better with the upcoming iPhone 14. The latest reports suggest Apple is using a newer, more advanced modem to power the iPhone 14’s 5G connectivity. This is important for a couple of key reasons.
For one thing, the new modem is expected to be physically smaller than the one used in the iPhone 13. That means taking up less space inside of the iPhone’s body potentially allowing for a bigger battery. It’s also reported that this new modem is more power-efficient when connecting to sub-6 and mmWave 5G networks. That means less battery use when connected to 5G. Considering 5G networks can have a massive impact on battery life, that’s a huge deal. Nothing is confirmed until Apple says so itself, but if the company somehow delivers better battery life than what’s already available, we’re going to be in for a serious treat.
