Apple is known for its coyness when it comes to publishing the battery capacities of its iPhones, but a new teardown video has confirmed the figure for the 2022 iPhone SE model: 2,018 mAh. Its predecessor had a 1,821-mAh cell, so as mentioned above, the third-generation smartphone gets a +10% boost. This will reinforce Apples claim that the iPhone SE 3 can deliver up to two more hours of video playback over the iPhone SE 2 .
However, anyone considering swapping the batteries around between the 2022 iPhone SE and 2020 model, for whatever random purpose, will find that it is not possible due to the battery connectors being different. This particular teardown, carried out by PBKreviews, results in a pretty average repairability score of just 5.5 points out of 10 for the new iPhone SE, with design and miscellaneous parts replacement being particularly troublesome.
Along with the battery confirmation, it is believed that the latest Apple iPhone SE features a likely custom modem in the form of the Qualcomm Snapdragon X57. This detail, coming from Nikkei via MacRumors, is what allows the new iPhone SE to connect to 5G, although this at the sub-6 GHz level rather than with faster mmWave 5G networks. The Apple iPhone SE 2022 currently starts at a price of US$429 for the 64 GB variant.
Performance Battery Life And Charging
Performance and battery life are where the differences between these two phones start to emerge. The iPhone SE packs Apples A15 Bionic chip, compared to the older A13 chip in the older iPhone SE. The A15 Bionic is the same chip as in the iPhone 13, boasting a six-core CPU, with four high-efficiency cores and two high-performance cores.
Theres been a RAM upgrade too, with the newer iPhone SE packing 4GB over the 2020 iPhone SEs 3GB. This shouldnt make much of a noticeable difference in practice. Apples A15 chip and upgraded RAM ensure the iPhone SE is lightning fast and can handle anything you throw at it, including the latest games. That said, the A13 chip is no slouch either and should be up to most tasks, despite its age.
Both phones have 64GB, 128GB, and 256GB storage variants, but theres no microSD card slot here, so the storage you choose is all youll ever have and the 64GB version is likely too paltry for most nowadays, so we recommend upgrading to the 128GB model regardless.
The new iPhone is also said to have a bigger battery, though were still waiting on confirmation as to its size. Regardless, the faster processor should boost battery life and ensure you get more screen-on time with the new iPhone SE Apple claims the battery lasts up to two hours. In our review, an average day left us with around 10% battery by dinner time, which means you may not make it through a full day if youre playing demanding games or streaming a lot of videos.

The iPhone SE 2022 lasted only 7 hours and 38 minutes . Our sister site, Toms Guide, re-ran the test and recorded a battery runtime of 9 hours and 5 minutes . Those runtimes are still less than the average smartphone , the Pixel 5a and the long-lasting Galaxy A52 .

The teardown video also shows that the battery connectors of the iPhone SE 2022 are different from the ones on the iPhone SE 2020. This means if anyone tries to replace ones battery with the other, it wont be possible.

The iPhone SE is powered by Apples flagship-class A15 Bionic chip. To recap, its built on a 5nm process and has nearly 15 billion transistors. It has 6 CPU cores and four GPU cores. It also has a new image signal processor and a new 16-core Neural Engine thats capable of delivering up to 15.8 trillion operations per second.
These impressive numbers give the iPhone SE an unassailable performance edge in this price category. The A15 Bionic is a monster mobile chip thats nearly unmatched in performance. This means the iPhone SE is one of the most powerful phones you can buy, period.
Because the iPhone SE is powered by the same chip found in the iPhone 13, their performance is more or less identical. The iPhone 13 Pro has better graphics performance because of its additional GPU core.
Compared to its predecessor which was powered by the A13 Bionic, the newer iPhone SE is significantly faster. Single-core scores were about 27% better while multi-core scores saw a jump of over 40%. On Geekbenchs GPU-intensive Compute benchmark, the new iPhone SE achieved a 50% higher score. On 3DMark Wild Life Unlimited, the new iPhone SEs score was about 25% faster.
And despite being Apples most affordable new iPhone, the iPhone SE easily saw off competition from even the newest and most powerful Android phones. Thats arguably the most impressive thing about this phone.

Has The Design Changed At All
In a word, no. The design of the Apple iPhone SE is exactly the same as that of the 2020 version, right down to the last millimeter. If you laid them on a table next to each other, youd only know them apart thanks to slight color differences. Everything is right where it was before the volume buttons and mute switch are on the left while the power button occupies the right side. Apples Lightning port sits on the bottom edge, right below the home button with a Touch ID sensor. That home button is the same capacitive sensor as before, but Apple has pretty much nailed the vibration to let you know youve pressed the button.
Considering the 2020 model was already a rehash of the iPhone 8, its no surprise that the design is starting to feel extremely dated. Where the previous model felt like a reasonable remaster of the original iPhone SE with some reliance on old flagship parts, this new version feels like a rerun of a rerun thats been aired one too many times.
Youll be hard-pressed to find a smaller or lighter phone on the market these days, though. The iPhone SE stands just 138.4mm tall and weighs a feather-light 144g. This makes the iPhone SE one of the last bastions for small phone lovers, but as with so many things about this phone, there are some caveats.

Overall Winner: Apple Iphone Se
Apples older iPhone SE did its best here, but our overall winner has to be the new Apple iPhone SE . For just a $30 price bump, youre getting a more powerful A15 Bionic chip, better battery life, 5G connectivity, and enhanced camera features, not to mention five to six years of OS updates. The iPhone SE is still a solid choice for those upgrading from an older iPhone or switching to Apple, but its a no-brainer to splash the extra $30 for the latest model.

How Is The Battery Life

Apples low resolution, 60Hz display probably works in the iPhone SEs favor. It also doesnt sap too much power with basic tasks thanks to Apples tightly optimized silicon and software.
Unfortunately, the iPhone SE does tend to run a little warm under pressure, though a minute or two of inactivity is usually enough to cool it back down. As a result, if youre particularly active with the camera, navigation, or a lot of gaming, youre going to be reaching for a charger before you crawl into bed.
You can stretch the small battery surprisingly far if you don’t push it, and 18W charging keeps your time spent plugged in to a minimum.
Once you drain the battery, you can get the iPhone SE back up and running with 18W USB Power Delivery so make sure to before you buy. That might seem low, but given the small size of the battery, the results are just fine. I reached a full charge after just under an hour.
