Detector Communication And Special Features
SMOKE ALARMS WITH CO ALARMS
Some smoke alarms are combination units which detect carbon monoxide as well as smoke and fire. Combination alarms are available in hard-wired and battery operated models, and have two different alarm sounds to tell you whether its smoke or CO.
DETECTOR SPECIAL FEATURES
Since it is against the law to disable smoke alarms, many smoke alarms are now available with features such as hush buttons, which temporarily silences a nuisance alarm.
Additionally, smoke alarms are available with strobe lights, pillow/bed shakers, and other notifiers for those who are hearing or visually impaired.
Smoke Detector With 10
These detectors are powered by sealed lithium batteries with a life span of 10 years. Pros? You do not have to replace the batteries until the power dies down for 10 years, the detector will fire an end-of-life warning, signalling replacement. The downsides of a 10-year smoke detector are that it is 1-2 times more expensive than a detector with replaceable batteries. Also, when the batteries are weak or the detector malfunctions, the whole device will have to be replaced.

Use Disposal Batteries For Smoke Detectors
Although this may be true, most disposable batteries do not last that long.
The main reason why disposable batteries dont last as long as they should is because they have a lot of impurities in them. For example, nickel-cadmium batteries contain cadmium, which is very toxic. This is why these batteries should be disposed of properly and not left around for anyone to come into contact with.
Disposable batteries are designed to be thrown away after use. The life span of these batteries can vary depending on how old they are. Disposable batteries can last anywhere from 7 to 15 years. These batteries are not recyclable. They are also not biodegradable.
There are two different types of disposable 9v batteries, both of which are mostly the same, however there are some differences. The two types of disposable batteries are:
- Alkaline Batteries
- Lithium Batteries
Alkaline Batteries
Alkaline batteries are best used in devices that drain power slowly such as LED lights, clocks, remote controls and kids toys. Alkaline batteris can be used in things that drain power faster, but expect the battery to lose its power much faster.
If you have tools or appliances that sit unused for long periods of time, but you need them to fire up right away, then alkaline batteries might be the best option..
Alkaline Pros
- Best for low drain devices
- Easily available
Alkaline Cons
- Due to the high replacement rate, most of these batteries will end up in the landfill.

How Often Should I Change The Batteries In My Smoke Detectors

Youll find smoke detectors on the market promising a 10-year sealed battery or 10 years of battery life wrong. Dont put your familys safety in the care of a longshot marketing promise. Forget the manufacturers suggested battery life.
Temperature, installation location, and how well alarms are cleaned and maintained affect the life of the battery. Replacement age depends on a number of factors and 10 years is by far more the exception than the rule.
Swap in new batteries to your smoke alarms every six months to a year and sleep like a baby. Its common for people to change their batteries every time they change the clocks backward or forwards. Whatever works for you.

Why Are Smoke Alarms Important
Installing a smoke alarm is crucial as it stands guard around the clock. Most fatal fires happen when families are asleep, leaving them with insufficient time to evacuate. A well-functioning smoke alarm will promptly trigger a shrill alarm giving a family some precious minutes to leave the house in safety.

Rechargeables Okay For Smoke Detectors
I’ve been using rechargeables for smoke alarms successfully for years, and find it hard to believe that doing so really poses a real problem, but to be clear, the manufacturers absolutely recommend against doing so:
- First Alert says, “Never use rechargeable batteries because they may not always provide a consistent charge.”
- Kidde recommends carbon-zinc, alkaline, and lithium, but doesn’t specify whether rechargeable lithium is okay, and says nothing at all about LSD-NiMH.
- Rayovac says, “Never use a rechargeable battery in a smoke detector as brands vary greatly on how fast they lose their charge and are not designed for usage in smoke detectors.”
- Wikipedia pooh-poohs NiMHs for smoke alarms, saying that when NiMH batteries die their voltage drops so far and so fast that you might miss hearing the low-battery warning chirp before the chirp dies completely from insufficient power. However, that statement is uncited, and my 9V rechargeables definitely chirp when they get low, and one person tested the low-battery warning with NiMH AA’s and found that it chirped at least three weeks . This easily surpasses the one-week standard listed in smoke alarm manuals for how long the chirp should last.
- Others suggest that the charge might be too low to power the siren, but high enough that you don’t get the low battery warning, though I’m skeptical whether that could really be the case. I’ll test that if I can ever find the time.
Smoke Detectors Alkaline Batteries Vs Lithium
Smoke Detectors with alkaline batteries are becoming a thing of the past, and reputable companies should only install detectors with in-built lithium batteries.
What is the Difference Between Lithium Batteries and Alkaline Batteries?
Essentially, they are both made of different materials and have different construction, which affects their performance in various uses.
Why are Lithium batteries better?
Although alkaline batteries are a good all-around option for everyday electronic devices and can last longer than other types, lithium batteries, have several distinct advantages over their alkaline counterparts:
- Theyre designed to last longer.
- They can withstand extremely low temperatures.
- Lithium batteries are lighter than alkaline batteries. So, they offer an advantage when used with portable devices, especially cordless power tools.
In short, a lithium battery can be used as a high-performing alternative to a standard alkaline battery.
Why do alkaline batteries eventually stop working?
Alkaline batteries are non-rechargeable. They usually need replacing every 3-4 years, meaning an extra 3-4 costly callouts to replace them.
Do lithium batteries last longer than alkaline?
Lithium batteries are designed to last a full 10 years. Therefore, they should not need changing before the 10 yearly replacement cycle of the detector itself.

Don’t Change Your Smoke Alarm Batteries Twice A Year
Changing your smoke alarm batteries twice a year is just a waste of batteries. Here’s why:
- The alarms in modern houses and apartments are “hardwired” , and the battery is just a backup in case the AC power fails. So batteries in those units will last far longer than battery-only units.
- All of the smoke alarm manuals I’ve reviewed say to replace the batteries when you hear the chirp, and say nothing about replacing twice per year. Even for a battery-operated alarm, “A fresh battery should last for one year under normal operating conditions.”
- For most alarms, you can use lithium batteries, which last for several years. See the section in Lithium batteries below for caveats.
- Consider using rechargeable 9V batteries , though know that the alarm manufacturers recommend against it.

What Is A 9 Volt Battery

Indeed, many of these batteries are made to look like AA and AAA batteries, making them easy to find and use.
A 9 volt battery is a type of alkaline battery, which means that it uses an alkaline electrolyte. Alkaline batteries contain a mixture of potassium hydroxide and sodium hydroxide. The sodium hydroxide reacts with the zinc in the positive terminal to form a compound that is less soluble than zinc oxide. This allows the zinc to stay in the positive terminal and not migrate to the negative terminal.
When you charge a 9 volt battery, the zinc in the positive terminal is oxidized to zinc oxide. When the battery is discharged, the zinc oxide dissolves back into the zinc.
While we can all agree that these are very interesting facts, I dont think they really have anything to do with the fact that a woman is going to be a successful leader. I mean, the fact that shes a woman doesnt mean that shes going to be a better leader than a man.
In fact, Im sure that if we put the same kind of study into it, wed find out that men are more likely to be leaders. I think its much more important to look at the qualities that make someone a good leader than it is to look at their gender.
