Android 11 Is The End Of The Road
The Ace’s biggest drawback is that it ships with Android 10. Over the past several years, Motorola consistently shipped its budget and midrange devices with the latest version of Android, so this is a disappointing change.
A Motorola representative told PCMag that an Android 11 update is in the cards but would not commit to a timeline. After Android 11, Motorola will not commit to future OS upgrades, though it may offer them. By comparison, Googles Pixel lineup and even Samsungs lower-end Galaxy A lineup get three generations of OS upgrades. Hopefully, Motorola will rethink this and commit to at least one additional upgrade after Android 11.
For the most part, Motorola ships with stock Android. Its light-handed My UX allows some personalization options, along with useful gestures for common tasks. Moto Gametime allows you to turn off notifications and tweak performance settings while gaming. You’ll get everything you expect from Android with few surprises.
Motorola One 5g Ace Review: Performance And 5g
To keep costs down, phone makers will opt for a lesser processor that’s still capable of handling the tasks most people perform on their phones. In the case of the Motorola One 5G Ace, Motorola’s turning to the Snapdragon 750G. That feels like a small step back from the Snapdragon 765G silicon powering the first 5G Motorola One, and our test numbers reflect that.
In Geekbench 5, which measures general performance, the Ace’s multicore score of 1,983 was only slightly better than the 1,952 result turned in by the first Motorola One. At least, the result was in line from what we’ve seen from other phones in the Ace’s price class the TCL 10 5G UW, which features a Snapdragon 765G, scored 1,932 while the OnePlus Nord N10 5G and its Snapdragon 690 chipset turned in a multicore result of 1,843.
Graphics testing produced a similar result, with the Motorola One 5G Ace reaching 1,097 frames in 3DMark’s Wild Life Unlimited test. The TCL 10 5G outperformed Motorola with a 1,670 result while the Nord N10’s 809 result lagged behind. I didn’t run into any problems while playing PUBG Mobile on the Motorola One Ace 5G, though my hand occasionally muffled the sound from the bottom-firing speaker when I held the phone in landscape view.
Motorola One 5g Ace Vs Google Pixel 4a 5g#
With an MSRP of $499, the Google Pixel 4a 5G provides pretty solid competition for the Motorola One 5G Ace.The Pixel 4a 5Gs display is a bit smaller, but you get a beautiful 6.2-inch OLED panel with a higher overall pixel density. It also has a lower MP main camera sensor, but the Pixel line is known for its cameras, and the Pixel 4a 5G turns in much better shots than the 5G Ace. Battery life is lower as well, thanks to a much smaller battery, but it supports significantly faster 18W charging in addition to wireless charging. The Verizon flavor of the Pixel 4a 5G also supports mmWave if youre looking for the fastest 5G speeds around.While the Pixel 4a 5G beats the Motorola 5G Ace in a lot of areas, including chipset, the Motorola 5G Ace actually benchmarks better in some tests. It also has a much more powerful battery and, crucially, costs about $100 less. If youre all about that 5G, and price is your biggest concern, the choice is pretty clear.

Motorola One 5g Ace Hardware
The One 5G Ace features a generous 6.7-inch screen. Depending on how you feel about big phones, that might be one of this devices best selling points. Battery is another strength: the Ace is equipped with a 5,000mAh battery , which is head and shoulders above the 4,000 or 4,500mAh capacity typical in budget and midrange phones.
The Ace is a little big for my comfort, but your mileage may vary.
The Ace is a large phone that makes itself known you wont forget its in your pocket, for example. Its a hair taller and wider than the Galaxy S21 Ultra and 1mm thicker. Its on the heavier side, too, at 212g, probably owing to the battery. I found its size a little awkward. It feels like a strain to reach my thumb across the screen with the phone in one hand. I also fumbled it a couple of times, picking it up too quickly and forgetting how much it weighs. This is very likely a Me Problem, though my husband thinks its comfortable to hold one-handed.
The screen is a 1080 x 2400 LCD panel with a standard 60Hz refresh rate. Its bright and viewable even in direct sunlight, but it lacks the nice contrast of OLED. Viewing it from slightly off angles results in a loss of contrast and slight color shift. Its resolution is stretched a bit thin on a screen this size, and if youve had higher-resolution phones before, you will probably notice it doesnt look quite as crisp.
The Ace is just shy of 10mm thick.Youll still find a 3.5mm headphone jack on the Ace.

Motorola One 5G Ace is a mid-range priced phone with Snapdragon 750G octa-core chipset. It has a 6.7-inch HD+ HDR 10 supported display that offers vivid colors. Under the hood, Motorola One 5G Ace has a big 5000mAh battery with 2-days of power backup, claims Motorola. Display and Camera
Motorola One 5G Ace comes fitted with a 6.7-inch HD+ display with a punch-hole notch. The display is HDR10+ supported and comes with a resolution of 1080x2400px. The screen has a pixel density of 393PPI in an aspect ratio of 20:9. You may expect sharp and detailed visuals from the screen. Also, it may treat your eyes while watching movies or gaming.
Motorola One 5G Ace has a triple rear AI camera set up with a 48MP primary sensor. The cameras are placed in a square bump with an LED flash. The main 48MP shooter is accompanied by a 118 ultra-wide camera and a 2MP macro shooter with dedicated autofocus. With the given cameras, you may capture proper pictures and may benefit from the macro camera. For selfies and video calls, Moto One 5G Ace has a 16MP front camera. Software: Not An Android One Phone
Despite its name, this is not an Android One phone. That means no cutting-edge Android out of the box, and no guaranteed two years of updates. In fact, the One 5G Ace ships with the exact same Android 10 operating system you got with last years Motorola One 5G, which actually was an Android One phone.
Im a fan of Motorolas flavor of Android 10, as My UX adds some nice conveniences, like snapping a screenshot by touching the display with three fingers, and shaking the phone in a chopping motion to activate the flashlight.
The inclusion of Android 10 is a bit of an annoyance in Motorolas lower-priced Moto G line, but for a $400 phone seemingly positioned in the Motorola One line, it feels like a really questionable move. Whats more, Motorola has committed to only one upgrade, Android 11, instead of the standard two years of operating system upgrades typically seen from Android One devices.
Android 10 is a fine operating system, and the implementation presented with the Motorola One 5G Ace is close to stock, with the addition of Motorolas My UX. Im a fan of Motorolas flavor of Android 10, as My UX adds some nice conveniences, such as snapping a screenshot by touching the display with three fingers or shaking the phone in a chopping motion to activate the flashlight.
The problem is that at this price point, this far into the life of Android 11, the phone should not have shipped with Android 10.
Motorola One 5g Ace Camera
Motorola has equipped the Ace with three rear-facing cameras: a 48-megapixel standard wide that kicks out 12-megapixel images, an 8-megapixel ultrawide, and a 2-megapixel macro camera. Around front, theres a 16-megapixel selfie camera.

Motorola also throws in a handful of useful software features. Theres an optional on-screen level, which I appreciate as a serial crooked photo-taker. You can opt for a very wide-format image using the main camera, turning the entire screen into a giant viewfinder, which is a fun creative exercise. Theres also a Pro mode if you want to take control of more settings. I didnt use it much, partly because its insistence on displaying live Kelvin color temperature values stressed me out.
Like most others in this class, the Ace takes nice photos in good lighting conditions. I like its handling of color and white balance. Food looks appetizing, and it handles mixed lighting well. Overall, when it stays in its lane, the Ace is capable of very nice photos.

Theres also some noticeable shutter lag, which would definitely bother someone trying to photograph a moving subject like a child. It was more of a minor annoyance in my particular use cases of sleeping cat and street scenes.
To be clear, its not a problem that a $400 phone cant do all of the things the Ace is trying to do its just that it probably shouldnt try in the first place.

Performance: Tons Of Memory And Storage
The Motorola One 5G Ace received a bit of a downgrade in terms of chipset, shipping with a Snapdragon 750G instead of the Snapdragon 765 found in its predecessor, but it performs and benchmarks at a higher level than you might expect.
Surprisingly enough, the Motorola One 5G Ace actually beat out the Snapdragon 765G-equipped Pixel 4a 5G in some benchmarks.
The first benchmark I ran was Work 2.0 from PCMark, which is a series of tests that show how well a phone can be expected to perform basic productivity tasks. It notched a decent score of 8,210 in that test, which blows the Moto G Power out of the water, and soars past the Moto G Stylus as well. For reference, the Pixel 4a 5G scored 8,378 in this test, or just barely higher than the 5G Ace.
Taking a look at specific tasks, the 5G Ace turned in a blistering 16,839 in the photo editing test, 6,400 in data manipulation, and 6,802 in web browsing. These results were all right in line with my own experience, as I had absolutely no trouble tearing through basic productivity tasks such as loading up web pages, writing emails, and keeping up with friends and coworkers in apps like Discord and Slack.
Surprisingly enough, the Motorola One 5G Ace actually beat out the Snapdragon 765G-equipped Pixel 4a 5G in some of the benchmarks I ran.

The Motorola 5G Ace doesnt have the best specifications out there for a phone in this price range, but it does provide a nice mix of features, performance, and 5G connectivity. If youre dead set on a 5G phone, and youre working on a budget, then this is a pretty good option. If 5G isnt important to you, there are better options for the money.

Audio Is Fairly Typical For Any Mobile Device But With Added Features
Fortunately, Motorola opted to keep its 3.5mm audio jack in place for the One 5G Ace. Because, as should come as no surprise at this point, mobile speakers are awful. Although the company does include a ton of features on the audio front. Including a deep Audio effects option in Settings. That, by the way, has a full EQ not just for the loudspeaker but also for headphones. And multi-volume settings for controlling sound across different apps.
The trouble with the audio from the speakers during music playback namely, muddiness, although each frequency I tested in music did show through to some extent is fixed by listening over headphones. While the sound on that front is hardly mind-blowing, its better than Id expected for the money.
Conversely, audio on ringtones and movies was better than acceptable. And volume is great too.
Performs Like A Flagship
The Ace’s Qualcomm Snapdragon 750G chipset and 6GB of RAM give it plenty of kick. Theres 128GB of storage on board with about 111GB available out of the box if thats not enough, you can add up to 1TB of storage with a microSD card.
Though the Motorola One 5G Ace appears glossy, the texture is odd and paper-like, making it easy to drop.
The Aces midrange chipset easily chews through just about any task you throw its way. Apps open instantly and theres no lag when swiping between screens. I tested it with dozens of open apps and Chrome windows and didnt encounter any hiccups. The display has a standard 60Hz refresh rate rather than the 90Hz refresh rate found on more expensive phones such as the Motorola One 5G, but I was able to play Altos Odyssey and Asphalt 9: Legends for hours without long load times or skipped frames.
When it comes to benchmarks, theres no good comparison, since the Ace is the first US phone with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 750G chipset. Its closest competitor is the Google Pixel 4a 5G, which sports a Qualcomm Snapdragon 765G chipset. On paper, it sounds like the Pixel would be the clear winner however, the Ace’s 660 processor has a few advantages. For starters, it uses the same Kyro 570 cores found on the Snapdragon 865, while the Pixel’s SoC has Kyro 475 cores. It also has an Adreno 620 GPU versus the Adreno 619 GPU on Google’s midrange offering.

Motorola One 5g Ace Review: Battery And Charging
Like its predecessor, the Motorola One 5G Ace features a 5,000 mAh battery, but makes more out of that massive power pack. The first 5G-ready Motorola One topped out at 9 hours and 14 minutes on our battery test, which involves continuous surfing over a cellular network until the phone runs out of power. The Ace pushed its result to 12 hours and 3 minutes averaged out across two tests.
5G can demand a lot of power so there’s only a handful of 5G phones on our longest phone battery life list, lead by the LG V60 ThinQ 5G . But the Motorola One 5G Ace is landing on that list with a time that’s 15 minutes better than what the OnePlus Nord N10 5G managed.
It’s good that the Motorola One 5G lasts a while on a charge, because it takes a fair amount of time to recharge the phone. A half-hour of charging Motorola’s drained device only got the battery capacity back to 25%. For context, the Nord N10 5G was up to 68% in that time, helped out by OnePlus’ Warp Charge 30T technology. But even the Pixel 4a 5G, which offers 18W charging, got up to 46% after 30 minutes.
Motorola One 5g Ace Performance Goes Beyond On Point For Its Price Bracket
Now, Motorola equipped its One 5G Ace with an incredibly powerful chipset Snapdragon 750G in spite of its cost. And it backed that with up to 128GB of storage and 6GB of RAM too. So, as might be expected, performance value for the money is high with this handset. In fact, during my review of the Motorola One 5G Ace, I only noted three areas of slow-down. And none of those was unexpected.
Its also worth pointing out that might have been fixed if I had turned off Adaptive performance. Or made other tweaks to settings. Specifically, this handset adjusts performance based on usage using AI. And that, in turn, results in better efficiency across the board. But it did suffer some slowdown under heavy multi-tasking with already heavy applications. Particularly where new apps are concerned.
So it wont quite replace a flagship for those who actually need that kind of performance.
It also lagged behind my daily driver in the speed of processing in photo or video editing apps. As well as in the loading of some heavier apps. This isnt altogether surprising either, given that this isnt flagship internal hardware. And the experience using the One 5G Ace never dipped beyond acceptable levels on the performance front anyway.
