Design: The Moto G Stylus 5g Is A Plastic Phone

Let’s talk design. The iPhone SE 3 features an ancient chassis that looks similar to that of the iPhone 6 . Yes, it’s actually more like an iPhone 8 because of the glass back, but the overall design goes back to 2014. Despite that, the back side of the iPhone SE 3 looks cleaner and more premium than that of the Moto G Stylus 5G . That’s mostly because the Motorola phone has a plastic build, while the iPhone has a glass/aluminum one.

Speaking of the build, the iPhone SE 3 comes with an IP67 rating. Meanwhile, Motorola mentions that the Moto G Stylus 5G is water repellent. So the latter phone might survive splashes and minor liquid accidents. However, it’s not as properly sealed as the iPhone. If that’s a big deal to you, you may want to take it into consideration.

Moto G Stylus Review: Display

With an expansive 6.8-inch LCD, the Moto G Stylus offers plenty of room for viewing content on its 720p screen. That also equals more space for stylus use, whether thats writing notes, making some art, or whatever else people use styli for.

The Moto G Stylus has an adaptive 90Hz refresh rate, which is nice to see at this price point. That means much smoother scrolling on web pages and slicker animations . 90Hz isnt the fastest out there, but its certainly more welcome than a 60Hz display.

That big display on the Moto G Stylus pays off with the default color calibration clocking in great results on the sRGB and DCI-P3 color gamuts. The Delta-E score, where 0 is perfect, is also good and a significant improvement over the Moto G Stylus from two years ago.

The 2022 Stylus also gets quite a bit brighter than the OnePlus Nord N200 5G, though outdoor visibility remains a challenge. 560 nits is plenty for indoors and low-light scenarios, however, so if you need to see the screen while out in daylight, find some shadows or shade your phone.

Battery: Finding Qi Moto G Stylus 5g Edition

One of the great aspects of the Moto G Stylus 5G is its battery life. This beast could last up to two days on a single charge with average use. The iPhone SE 3 can’t compete with that. Notably, though, the Motorola phone lacks Qi wireless charging capabilities. So you will be limited to wired charging only through its USB Type-C port. If wireless charging is important to you, then get the iPhone SE 3. Though, said phone has a Lightning port, which is not as commonly used and as capable as USB Type-C.

Moto G Stylus Review: Performance And Battery Life

Performance is one glaring area where the Moto G Stylus utterly falls flat. The MediaTek Helio G88 system-on-chip inside is hardly up to any basic task. Practically every app I opened noticeably lagged when launched, and sometimes even when performing actions a problem weve had with other MediaTek-powered Moto phones like the Moto G Power and Moto G Pure. The note app had trouble sometimes, especially when the Play Store was updating in the background.

It got to the point where I hated picking up the phone to use it. Its incredibly frustrating when it can barely handle a single foreground task, let alone if something is running in the background. And when you look at our benchmark results, it all starts to make sense.

For this comparison, I brought out the previous LTE-only Moto G Stylus model and the OnePlus Nord N200 5G. The LTE Stylus from 2020 runs on a Snapdragon 665, while the Nord N200 uses a Snapdragon 480 5G.

As you can see, the new Moto G Stylus performs about the same as its two-year-old predecessor and worse than the OnePlus Nord N200 5G. Thats pretty damning for the Helio G88 chip in the new Stylus.

Motorola seems to have started shifting to MediaTek processors for the 2022 Moto G phones and we continue to be unimpressed with them in fact, this new push leaves me worried for future budget phones. Even in our video test, where a phone transcodes a 4K file to 1080p, the Moto G Stylus floundered at 2 minutes and 16 seconds.

Software Performance Battery Life

Motorola usually ships phones with a very close to stock android experience, and the G Stylus is no exception. At first I thought the preinstalled Moto app was just advertising bloatware, but it actually introduces you to gesture controls with links to turn them on or off in settings. Beginner-friendly considerations like this are welcome in my book.

While the MediaTek Helio G88 in the G Stylus isnt particularly powerful, its not so underpowered that the phone suffers. It is at best a lateral move from the Snapdragon 678 in last years Stylusits not quite as fast, but performance is still in the range of what wed expect in this price range. Theres the occasional hitch in opening apps and browsing the web, but most games still run smoothly. Titles like Genshin Impact dont run very well, but playing less demanding games like CSR2 without noticeable frame drops is a breeze, even when locked in at 90fps.

Motorola claims 2-day battery life out of the 5000 mAh battery, and that checks out. 48 hours after a charge, the battery was usually somewhere around 20%, and I felt comfortable leaving the house with way less battery than I would normally.

Design Display And Durability

For the most part, the metallic blue Moto G Stylus looks identical to the Moto G Power. Its a little smaller, however, at 6.24 by 2.98 by 0.36 inches and 6.77 ounces.

The front of the phone is dominated by a 6.4-inch LCD with a small camera notch at the top and minimal bezels. The screen has a 19:9 aspect ratio, and resolution clocks in at 2,300 by 1,080, for 399 pixels per inch. It looks crisp and gets bright, making it easy to see in direct sunlight. Colors are slightly cool, but its a very good display for the price.

On the back youll find a triple camera stack with a time-of-flight sensor in the top left corner, while the fingerprint sensor is hidden beneath the Motorola logo in the center. The top edge of the phone is bare, and the bottom is home to a headphone jack, a USB-C charging port, and a speaker. The left side has a hybrid SIM/microSD slot, while the volume rocker and textured power button are on the right both provide a satisfying click but are hard to reach with small hands.

Design Hardware Whats In The Box

At 6.8 inches, the G Stylus is a big phone. The display clocks in at 1080×2460 with a 90Hz refresh rate, which is a nice step up from the 720p screens we’ve seen on most budget phones lately. The IPS screen still looks pretty good with nice and vibrant colors. The brightness is also sufficient enough to see in direct sunlight. Black comes across more like dark gray instead of a perfect OLED black, but its still good for casual content consumption as long as you have headphones. The single bottom-firing speaker shares space with the headphone jack, charge port, and a stylusthat’s the only speaker. Amplified earpieces have been common on phones for a long time, and it feels like a weird exclusion on a phone otherwise geared so well towards watching YouTube when youve got a spare half hour. The 2020 Stylus had stereo speakers, but thats just one of several cut corners here.

While the body is clearly styled to resemble the glass sandwich design of high-end phones, the matte frame and shiny back are both plastic. While it doesnt look as good as an actual glass back, its just as much of a fingerprint magnet. The camera bump on the back is minimal and cuts down from the four cameras on the last model to 3. More later about why thats a good thing. The right side of the phone has the volume rocker and the power button/fingerprint reader. Unlocking with the fingerprint sensor isnt lightning fast, but its much faster than if you use face unlock.

Motorola Moto G Stylus 5g Battery Life

When the pen is taken out of the silo, a little button that offers choices to capture a note, annotate a screenshot, make a GIF, or even launch an app, hovers above the screen. All of this is extremely reminiscent of Samsung, but with Motorolas undoubtedly more lighthearted style and symbols. The quick frame rate of the screen makes writing or sketching with the pen easy and responsive.

The cameras performance is merely adequate. It either overexposed or undersaturated the colors in the pictures I took with it. Although Id be comfortable with it for a camera on a $500 phone , its not terrible. Dont let the spec sheets mention of 50 megapixels lead you astray.

If youre searching for a phone that supports styluses, has a goodbut not amazingcamera configuration, and has a long battery life, the Moto G Stylus 5G is a wonderful option. Two basic variations of the Moto G Stylus 5G are available: one with mmWave with sub-6GHz 5G that is tied to Verizon, and the other with sub-6GHz 5G exclusively that is sold unlocked. Few smartphones at this price point support mmWave, which, if youre in a location with enough service, allows for the quickest data speeds.

If any of the aforementioned points mean something to you, then go for the Motorola phone. On the other hand, the iPhone SE 3 has a more premium build , an unrivaled mobile processor, and long years of software support. You can expect it to receive major iOS updates for at least 5 years. Meanwhile, Motorola has only promised a single year of major Android OS updates.

With the Moto G Stylus 5G having a plastic build, no IP rating, and virtually no software support, you’re better off getting the iPhone SE 3. The shiny specs on the Motorola phone have a short lifespan. Unless the cameras, display, or battery really mean something to you, skip it.
