Find The Right Wrenches

Car Battery Terminals Positive & Negative ( How To Tell the Difference)

You will need at most only a couple of wrenches to get the job done, depending on how much space there is to maneuver the wrench and whether the battery cable uses a single bolt on the clamp or one that also uses a nut on the other end. You’ll have to borrow the wrenches from a friend or relative or buy a set. Most but not all battery-cable clamps have 10-millimeter bolts, so you’ll likely need a 10-millimeter open-end wrench to disconnect the cables. A socket-wrench set that includes that same-size socket will be helpful as well. In some cases, you can get by with just an adjustable open-end wrench.

How To Jump Start A Car

Jump starting a dead car battery can initially seem overwhelming, but its simple and easy when done correctly.

Lets take a quick look at how to jump start a car:

1. Get a donor car: Have a car with a working battery positioned next to the car with a dead battery without the cars touching. Each battery should also be firmly secured in the battery tray.

3. Identify the dead battery ground: The common ground used is the cars metal frame or engine block. The ground acts as a negative connector, dispersing energy away from any nearby electrical component.

4. Attach the jumper battery cables in this order:

  • First, attach the positive battery cable to the dead batterys positive battery terminal . Then, connect the positive battery cable to the positive battery terminal of the good battery.
  • Attach the negative jumper cable to the donor cars negative terminal . Lastly, connect the dead batterys negative jumper cable to the ground

5. Start the cars: Start the car with the good battery first and let it run for about two minutes. After about two minutes, you can try to start the car with the dead battery.

6. If the car doesnt start: Wait a few more minutes and try again.

7. If the car starts: Dont turn off the battery. The newly working battery needs time to build up a charge and will likely die again if the cars ignition is turned off.

Once charged sufficiently, detach the battery cables in this order:

Step : Dead Battery Vehicle: Start The Car

Start the car with the charged battery. Wait one or two minutes and try to start the car with the dead battery.

If the car starts:

  • Remove the black negative clamp from the ground of the vehicle needing the jump.
  • Remove the black negative clamp from the assisting vehicle.
  • Remove the red positive clamp from the assisting car.
  • Remove the red positive clamp from the formerly stalled vehicle.

If the car doesnt start:

  • Wait a few moments and repeat Step 9.
  • We recommend fully charging your battery at the first opportunity after its being jump-started.

Where Is The Positive On A Car Battery

There are a few key places to check on a car battery for both the positive and negative terminals. The most common place to look is on the top of the battery. This is where the positive terminal is typically located. The negative terminal is often found on the bottom of the battery. Another place to check is on the side of the battery, near where the cables connect.

If You’re Storing Your Vehicle

A Final Note: If you’re removing the battery cables to store your ride for an extended time, know that a fully charged battery will hold its charge for six months to a year if you disconnect the negative cable. If you’re disconnecting the negative cable and leaving the battery in place, be sure to push the cable out of the way. If there’s any chance that it might spring back into place and touch either battery terminal, use zip ties to hold it in place. Better still, buy yourself a battery-disconnect switch , which will serve the same purpose as removing the cables and will be there whenever you need it.

Signs Your Battery Needs To Be Replaced

If your battery can’t hold a charge or can’t be jumped, its time for a new battery. To avoid getting to this point it can help to know what causes these problems. Overloading a battery or improper use can cause these issues on top of other things.

  • If you have a smell or odor coming out of your engine check your battery. A short circuit or damage to the case of the battery can cause a leak. Battery acid leaking in your car is never a good thing.
  • If you notice corrosion on the battery connectors it may be time to change your battery. Corrosion is a white ashy substance that prevents your battery from putting out its full power. Sometimes cleaning the corrosion can help, but sometimes that damage is irreversible.
  • If your battery isn’t holding a charge then you may have overloaded it. Plugging too many electronics into your car can drain your battery faster than your alternator can charge it. If this happens it causes damage to your battery’s reserve permanently.

Why Disconnect The Negative Or Black Cable First

What Happens If You Connect Positive To Negative on a Car battery?

You should disconnect the negative cable when removing a battery. If you remove the positive first in an electric circuit, you run the risk of a short circuit. Its also related to how a car operates.

Ultimately, the car engine should be connected to the battery, which has two terminals for it to work. It is hooked up by cables where the current flows directly from the positive terminal to the negative terminal.

You dont need any other wiring network since the energy flows freely and directly from one terminal to the other without any interference across the engine block.

So, if you remove the negative wire first, there will be no effect on the current flow because there are no other wires or paths where the current can flow.

It can only flow to the negative side, which will not happen since you have already disconnected it. But if you disconnect or remove the positive or red cable first, the existing circuit will lose its flow of electricity. It could even lead to a short circuit.

This is a very simplified way of explaining it. You also need to consider other factors in the real world.

Hooking Up Car Batterys Jumper Cables

Damaged batteries might be the main cause of your failure to start the vehicles engine. But lets take a closer look. If a light is on and the system is still working, you just need to take a moment to jumpstart the vehicle battery.

Follow these simple steps and your car will be up and running in no time:

Positive And Negative Terminal Of Car Battery

When removing your old car battery and installing a new one, its important to know which way is positive and which is negative.

This matters because putting the battery in backward could short out and damage your car. You might even risk getting shocked by the current that runs through the car when you plug in the wrong terminal.

So how do you know which end of your battery is positive and which is negative? The easiest way is to look at the batterys label and the cables color.

The Positive terminal is the cable that has a red color on it. The Negative terminal has a gray or black color.

These terminals connect your car battery to other electrical components in your vehicle. You should always connect the red to the positive clamp and the black cap to the negative clamp so that no electrical damage can occur.

Make sure you get these connections rightif you hook up the positive and negative wires backward, you could damage your cars electrical system.

How To Jumpstart A Car

Youll need a donor vehicle or a spare battery or alternatively, consider buying a jump pack. The little NOCO boost pack is about the best Ive seen, and Ive been a mechanic for over twenty-five years.

Its small enough to fit in a glove box and powerful enough to start a diesel engine. Anyway, you can check it out here on the Auto electrical tools page.

To jump it with a regular set of jumpers, follow these steps.

Donor car or any fully charged 12-volt battery, the jump-starting procedure is simple. Red positive to red positive booster cable first, then connect the negative black to both battery and chassis or engine ground. A ground is any bare metal on the chassis or engine.

Check the battery and verify both negative and positive markings before connecting terminals.

Does Battery Have Positive And Negative

Yes, a battery has both positive and negative. The battery in any electronic or mechanical device is responsible for converting chemical energy into electrical.

This is done when a wire is connected between the positive and negative terminal thereby producing streams of electrons. There will be no chemical energy if the positive and negative terminals are not connected.

A battery is known to have 3 parts the electrolyte, cathode , and the anode . The positive and negative are usually positioned at both ends of a battery with the positive marked and the negative marked .

Depending on the car battery or the volts in use, both positive and negative may not be positioned at the ends rather they may be found side by side on the unit.

The connection between both cathode and anode results in a build-up of electrons, this build-up which specifically takes place in the anode leads to an electrical difference.

An electrolyte is a chemical solution that keeps the balance between the anode and cathode by stopping the electrons produced from going directly to the cathode from the anode. The electrolyte in a battery usually surrounds the cathode and anode.

Positive Or Negative First When Connecting A Battery

The positive side always needs to be connected first on your vehiclebattery.

The cables must be put on in this order. Otherwise, you can cause sparksand risk electrocution or causing a fire.

Your car insurance may not cover damage caused from improperly hooking upyour battery.

If you have to jump start a dead battery, jumper cables must always behooked to the positive terminal first as well. Hooking to the wrongterminal can damage the battery.

The negative cable for the dead battery should be hooked to a metal ground, like an unpainted part of the engine block.

The negative cable for the donor vehicle can be hooked to the negative ofthe charged battery.

The two terminals are not always on the same side of the battery.

Some manufacturers will have the positive terminal on the left side, andthe negative terminal on the right side. Others will have them in reverseorder from this.

It’s a good idea to rely on the markings and colors on the battery insteadof assuming that the positive side and negative side are always the same.

Instructions For Jump Starting A Car Battery

The best time to learn about jump starting a battery is before you become stranded and need to know. These instructions should help you become familiar with the process. Once you’ve read through these instructions, print them and purchase a set of jumpercables. Then, keep these instructions and your jumpercables together somewhere in your vehicle or trunk, in the event you should ever need them.

  • Pull the car with the good battery next to the vehicle with the dead battery, where the jumpercables will easily reach between the vehiclesbatteries. The cars should not be touching and both ignitions should be shut off. Prop open the hood of each vehicle.
  • Visibly locate the batteries and their terminals. Each battery has two metal terminals. One is marked positive the other negative . There are also positive and negative cables in the jumper set. The red one is positive, the black one is negative.
  • Connect the positive clamp of the jumper cable on the positive terminal of the dead battery.
  • Connect the positive clamp of the jumper cable on the positive terminal of the live battery.
  • Connect the negative clamp of the jumper cable on the negative terminal of the dead battery.
  • Connect the negative clamp of the jumper cable on the negative terminal of the live battery. OR, you may connect the negative clamp of the jumper cable on the body of the vehicle . It can be the engineblock or another metal surface away from the battery. This is the final connection.

What Is The Positive Terminal On A Car Battery

The positive terminal cover on the battery is usually red-colored. However, not all car manufacturers use this method. If the terminals arent color-coded, you can also look at the cover to see if theres a plus sign on it.

So, what do you do if the cover is missing? You are going to have to figure out the terminals another way. With some vehicles, the wires leading to the terminal will also be colored red, helping you to differentiate between the two.

We always recommend using a multimeter to be 100% sure which battery terminal is negative and which is positive.

How To Jump Start Your Car

caveurbandesign: Car Battery Positive And Negative

One of the reasons you need to be sure which is the positive and the negative terminal in your car battery is when it suddenly goes dead, and you need to jump-start it. You have to connect the right wiring of the jump-starting cable to avoid an electrical accident and revive your dead battery.

So, how can you safely do it? First, you need a good working battery from another car and a jumper cable set.

Here are the steps you can safely follow:

  • Park the other car with a fully charged and working battery near your car with its dead battery.
  • Now, connect one end of the red jumper cable first to the positive terminal of the working battery and its other end to the positive terminal your dead battery.
  • Connect one end of the black jumper cable to the negative terminal of the good battery and its other end to the metal ground used by your dead battery. It could be any part of the engine block or the chassis of your vehicle as long as it is not very near to the dead battery.
  • Start the engine of the car with the working battery and leave it idling for a few minutes.
  • Now, start the engine of your car. With the jumper cable still attached to both batteries, leave your car idling for a few minutes.
  • Now that your car is already running, start to remove the jumper cable in reverse.
  • The first cable that you need to remove is the black jumper cable. Remove the end connected to your car before you remove the end connected to the other car.
  • Fully charge your battery after you jump start it.
