Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra : Battery Life Comparison

Galaxy S22 Ultra vs. iPhone 13 Pro Max Battery Test

The Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra comes with a larger 5,000 mAh battery, which is the same size as last years Galaxy S21 Ultra.

To test its battery life, we turned off Automatic Brightness, and set its display brightness to 50%.

Why 50%? That is actually slightly higher than the average indoor brightness level of 40% during the day, and is what we usually use in all our mobile battery life tests.

It is important to fix the brightness level, to make sure the screen brightness does not change as the ambient brightness changes.

We then ran the PCMark Work 3.0 battery life test until its battery capacity dropped to 20% several times, and this was the best result we obtained with 60 Hz and 120 Hz refresh rates :

Will you look at that!

The Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra has a battery life of 10.5 hours with Adaptive refresh rate enabled, and a whopping 14.25 hours with the Standard refresh rate!

But lets compare its battery life at 60 Hz and 120 Hz, against the S21 Ultra and Z Flip 3 smartphones.

Standard Refresh Rate

The Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra really shines with the refresh rate set to 60 Hz.

The S22 Ultra used 20% less power per minute, which delivered 25% longer battery life than the S21 Ultra.

Work 3.0
62.0 mAh 29.8 mAh

Interestingly, the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra recharged as quickly with a standard 15 watt charger, as the S21 Ultra with its more powerful 25 watt charger!

Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra Review: Cameras

The Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra looks determined to top our best camera phone list and unseat Apple and Google. Our testing shows that the S22 Ultra is a very good camera phone, but it’s quite the champ.

The Galaxy S22 Ultra boasts a larger 2.4um pixel sensor for capturing more light and data, as well as a Super Clear Glass lens for capturing nighttime videos without flares. You also get a 12MP ultrawide lens, plus dual 10MP telephoto cameras that combine to offer 10x optical zoom and 100x space zoom. For more comparisons, check out our Samsung Galaxy S22 vs iPhone 13 Pro Max low-light photography comparison.

Samsung is also doubling down on computational photography with its camera system. There’s adaptive pixel technology that combines 9 pixels into one for better images in the dark, enhanced AI high-res processing and 4x faster multi-frame processing. These software features are already getting a boost from Samsung, which began a camera update rollout in June 2022. Among the key improvements are a performance upgrade to portrait mode and a bug fix for Single Take.

While the S22 Ultra’s Night Mode is improved, I’m more impressed with how the camera performs in low light without engaging Night Mode. Take this shot of a couple of Star Wars figurines with very little ambient light. With the S21 Ultra you ban barely make out the left side the Darth Vader’s helmet or Han Solo’s boots or hair. Both become visible and more clear in the S22 Ultra’s shot.

Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra: Software

  • Android 12 with Samsung One UI 4.1
  • Some apps, like Messages, are duplicated with Samsung and Google versions

While the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra is an Android 12 phone – and one of the best Android phones at that – its also running One UI 4.1, the latest version of Samsungs Android interface software. Like most Android overlays, this one isnt primarily there to enforce a bespoke design aesthetic on top of pure Android rather, it duplicates some utilities, like the web browser and photos apps, and adds tons of smart software touches and useful tools, like Samsungs new Wallet, that should enhance the Android experience

Samsungs onboard photo and video-editing capabilities, for example, are strong. We especially like the ability to magically remove an object from a photo, which worked like a charm on a photo of a dozen donuts instead of eating them, we just selected them one by one and removed them from the original image. The software did leave behind a few telltale artifacts, but you’d be hard-pressed to tell what was there before we digitally removed a donut.

Theres also a freely downloadable Expert Raw app, which gives you access to all the pro shooting tools and lets you shoot raw images, which we then edited on the phone in Adobes Lightroom app.

We started the process on the phone, and then we had to visit a URL on the PC where we found a QR code. We pointed the S22 Ultra camera at the code, and the phone then guided us through the rest of the set-up process.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold4 And Flip4 Are Shown To Beat A Galaxy S22 Ultra In A Battery Drain Test

Samsung touts its Galaxy Z Fold4 and Galaxy Z Flip4 as its most advanced foldable devices yet however, the OEM has not managed to upgrade their battery capacities much, at 4,400mAh and 3,700mAh respectively.

At 5,000mAh, the Galaxy S22 Ultra faces no such limitations by comparison. Therefore, one might presume that the older, good old candy-bar-form flagship would have the edge in terms of day-to-day endurance. However, according to a new video by TechDroider, one might just be wrong about that.

The YouTuber pitted the 3 top-end devices against each other, as well as the OnePlus 10 Pro and Xiaomi 12S Ultra as Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 and 8+ Gen 1 comparators for the Z Fold4/Flip4 and S22 Ultra respectively.

Once those subjects had been joined by an iPhone 13 Pro Max, presumably as a battery benchmark, the test was underway. The protocol consisted of constant screen/processor engagement via extended runs of games like PUBG, video apps like and general camera app use until the devices eventually ran down to zero.

It yielded a number of unexpected results, not the least of which was the Galaxy S22 Ultra powering down first at 8 hours and 56 minutes of this treatment.

Furthermore, the Galazy Z Flip4, despite lagging behind at regular check-points, was depicted as beating it . The Galaxy Z Fold4 was next to go at 9 hours 18 minutes.

Tips To Fix Samsung S21/s22 Battery Draining Fast

Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra: 108MP Cameras, 16GB RAM, 6000mAh battery!

Have S21 Ultra Battery Draining Fast issue? Try the following fixes:

Fix 1: Enable Dark Mode

Enabling Dark mode on Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra phones prevents night-time battery depletion. In addition, it allows you to maintain the quantity of light shown by each pixel. It is also worth noting that dark mode is less taxing on your eyes.

To enable the Dark Mode on S21 Series, follow these steps:

Step 1: Navigate to the Settings menu.

Step 2: Tap the Display button.

Step 3: Enable the Dark Mode.

Fix 2: Switch to Standard Refresh Rate

The Galaxy S21 Ultra is among the most powerful phones available. It has a high refresh rate or 120Hz display. Battery consumption is directly linked to increased refresh rate, believe it or not. When your smartphone begins to overheat and deplete energy, you can reduce the frame rate and set it to the regular rate, i.e., 60Hz.

To modify the refresh rate on the Galaxy S21 Ultra, follow these instructions:

Step 1: Launch the Settings and then to Display.

Step 2: Navigate to the Motion Smoothness tab.

Step 3: Change the default refresh rate, 120Hz, to the standard refresh rate, 60Hz.

Fix 3: Lower Screen Resolution to FHD+

Another aspect that contributes to battery consumption on the Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra is the usage of high-resolution screens. That’s why it’s preferable to lower the screen resolution on your Galaxy S21 and S22 smartphones. Here’s how to adjust the resolution of your Samsung Galaxy S21 and S22 Ultra’s screen:

Samsung Galaxy S22 Plus: Familiar Software Spicy Performance

Launching with One UI 4.1 based on Android 12, the Galaxy S22 UI looked very similar to the dozens of Samsung phones that had already received the One UI 4 update by that point. From Material You theming to revamped Smart Widgets, along with revamped privacy features and notifications, the look and utility of 4.1 and the Samsung launcher were largely unchanged.

The “new” OS did bring Samsung and Google closer together: it made over Samsung Messages giving RCS a boost and enabled for sharing your screen with friends or hosting YouTube watch parties between Galaxy and Pixel phones. Unfortunately, I found the feature to be disappointingly underbaked after field-testing it.

In hindsight, the Galaxy S22 series had very few software launch highlights to make it particularly exciting, as a by-product of Samsung drastically improving its update speed.

Samsung has become the undisputed champion of Android updates.

Samsung has become the undisputed champion of Android updates in both speed and longevity. The Galaxy S22 will receive four software updates through Android 16, plus five years of security updates. And this year, Samsung began updating three-year-old flagships like the S10 as early as January, proving the S22+ will receive timely OS updates for years to come while other brands keep former flagships waiting through the spring or summer.

The S22+ gets consistently warm trying to keep up with demanding Android games but it can play them.

Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra: Specs And Performance

  • A 4nm processor, Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 in most of the world
  • UK and Australia get Samsung Exynos 2200 chipset

Over almost a week of intense testing, the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra never let us down. Its a fast and powerful phone. The 4nm processor doesnt outperform Apples A15 Bionic in Geekbench benchmarks, but raw numbers never tell the full story.

For what its worth, here are the numbers for our device, which shipped with 12GB of memory and 256GB of storage).

CPU:

GPUOpenCL Score: 5866

Apples numbers are better, but the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra didnt feel any slower across all tasks. Perhaps the only situation where we detected a small stutter was on 8K video playback .

This is also a gorgeous and quite powerful gaming phone, and handled my Asphalt 9 race through Barcelona without a single hiccup.

Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra: Cameras

  • Main camera is 108MP with f/1.8 aperture and an 85-defree FOV
  • Two telephoto lenses with 10MP sensors, one ultrawide 12MP sensor
  • Optical zoom up to 10x, Space Zoom enhanced up to 100x

When people say, So, its basically a new Samsung Galaxy Note, right? we have to flip over the phone to show them the camera array, which is a dead ringer for the one on the Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra.

Dont worry, though this is not some Frankensteins monster of smartphone design. Because Samsung has done away with the contour box that popped the whole thing up a millimeter or so above the back of the S21, the S22 Ultras array of five lenses looks perfectly at home.

The cameras dont just look similar theyre almost the same. There are two 10MP telephoto lenses: one is f/2.4 with a 36-degree field of view and the other is f/4.9 with an 11-degree FOV. Theres also a 12MP ultrawide with a 120-degree FOV, and then theres the 108MP main wide camera with an 85-degree FOV.

However, the technology backing these lenses has gotten an upgrade. While the image sensors haven’t changed since the S21 Ultra, Samsung has done some work on optical image stabilization, digital image stabilization , and image processing. The result is better performance from all the lenses, but especially in the zoom arena.

The 30x and especially 100x Space Zoom is where, at least in previous iterations of Samsungs technology, youd see significant artifacts in your photos.

Samsung Galaxy S22 Tips & Tricks – Longer Battery Life & Much Faster

The nice thing about the three Galaxy S22 models is that they all run Android 12 underneath Samsungs One UI 4.1. That means greater customization options, stronger privacy features, and a whole host of new tweaks and bug fixes that Samsung has added on top of Googles work.

The biggest differences will come down to the Note-like features present on the Galaxy S22 Ultra. These will include notetaking additions, like saving handwritten notes to Office 365 and Outlook. Samsung also mentioned that you can copy content from images and messages and save them to notes, too. The system also uses AI to predict your handwriting and direction, helping the writing process feel more seamless and lifelike.

Samsung has committed to four years of platform updates and an additional year of security patches for all of its phones, including the Galaxy S22. That means each new model will see Android 16 in 2026 and will get their last security patch also in 2027. While its still not Apple-levels of support, thats a long time for an Android phone. In fact, it beats Googles current offering.

Samsung’s Galaxy S22 Gives Me Battery Anxiety But I Like It Anyway

The Galaxy S22’s battery life could be better, but everything else about the phone is great.

The Galaxy S22 has just about everything I want in a phone. The design and build quality are eye-catching enough to make it feel worth its $800 price. The screen is luminous, and the camera takes photos with vibrant colors that feel more accurate than those taken on Samsung’s older phones.

There’s just one problem: the Galaxy S22 gives me battery anxiety. It delivers the all-day battery life Samsung claims to provide, but sometimes just barely.

I’ve been using the Galaxy S22 as my daily phone for the last month, and my opinion hasn’t changed much from my initial review in February. Four months later, the Galaxy S22 still feels like the right phone for people who prefer smaller devices and want a high-quality screen and camera. Just pack a charger if you anticipate having a long day.

Fix : Disable Always On Display

Although Always on Display is extremely useful for getting quick information about your phones battery level and notifications at a glance, it also consumes a considerable amount of battery life. If you do not require the Always on Display feature on your Galaxy S22 Ultra, we highly recommend that you disable it. This will not only save a decent amount of battery life but will also help reduce any distractions while working or enjoying time with your family and friends.

To disable the Always on Display on your Galaxy S22 Ultra, navigate to Settings > Display, navigate to the bottom of the menu and click on Always on Display. Here, tap the toggle to disable it. You can also set a custom time period for when your phones screen lights up. This way, you can save your phones battery life by disabling the feature during your sleep.

Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra Specifications

The Galaxy S22 Ultra is Samsungs top-tier flagship for 2022 and has some of the most boastful features in a smartphone. It comes equipped with the latest Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chip and is backed by up to 1TB of fast storage.

The Galaxy S22 Ultra also has an impressive camera array with a 108MP main shooter, a 12MP ultrawide, 10MP telephoto that can zoom 10x optically, and another 10MP 3x telephoto lens.

Easily the best part about the Galaxy S22 Ultra is its big, vibrant 6.8-inch Dynamic AMOLED display that refreshes at 120 frames a second. It supports LTPO technology, which can drop the framerate as low as 1Hz to preserve battery life.

Samsung has also promised up to 4 years of generational Android updates and 5 years of security patches. This beats even what Google is offering with their Pixel lineup of phones. OneUI has also come a long way in terms of both performance and security.

Todays super-powerful, ultra-slim smartphones and ready for multi-task foldables allow you to move around easily at any time of the day unless youre tripped by a drained battery and portable power banks, forcibly pulling or, for an hour, plugging the wall next to it.

While it may be different, there are still very common things between the Galaxy S22 Ultra and its S22 and S22 Plus. All three models feature Qualcomms latest, Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 processor, as well as IP68 weatherproof ceilings and front and rear Gorilla Glass Victus Plus.

The Galaxy S22 Ultra and S22 Plus have OLED screens with a maximum brightness of 1,750 nits, but all three have a top refresh rate of 120Hz. Only the Ultra variant uses the LTPO display, which allows the screen to change its refresh rate compared to other models, which theoretically helps save battery life.
