Symptoms Of Service Battery Charging System Message

GMC Acadia “Service Charging System” Problem (alternator)

A fault with the battery charging system may show symptoms way before the message appears on the dashboard or the battery warning light comes on. Be keen at all times to detect them on time.

The first symptoms you may notice are the engines strange noises or rumbling sounds due to damaged alternator bearings.

A dead or damaged battery is another clear sign to always look out for.

Also, listen to the starter. It may not be working at all or just making clicking noises when you turn the ignition key but does not crank the engine. In that case, the starter does not get enough power from the battery.

The last symptom to look out for is the dim headlights or interior lights. It is also due to insufficient power from the battery.

How Do You Know If Your 2019 Gmc Acadia Needs A New Battery

The most common symptoms of bad 2019 GMC Acadia batteries are if your vehicle is slow to start after turning the key, or if your battery cables and connectors show signs of heavy corrosion. You may also notice a boisterous clicking sound when turning the key or if your electronics work but the vehicle won’t start. These are all tell tale signs of failing batteries on your 2019 GMC Acadia. Give our experts at Bill Estes Chevy Buick GMC a call or book an online appointment here.

What Does The Service Battery Charging System Message Mean

The service battery charging system message means there is a fault in the charging system. An amber/yellow or red battery light may accompany it to draw your attention to the problem.

When you see the message on the dashboard, there is a problem that you should immediately address. It can be caused by a faulty alternator, damaged battery, corroded battery terminals, or damaged connecting cables.

Your car can continue driving quite well, but that can only be for a moment. If a faulty alternator is a cause, the vehicle will switch to the battery. Once it runs out, the car will turn into unresponsive metal junk. The engine stops and cannot restart!

A bad battery or damaged charging cables will also trigger the service battery charging system message, and hence the warning light. The car will continue to operate normally, provided the alternator is operational. Once you stop the engine, the car dies and can never restart.

You should treat the service battery system message with the urgency it deserves. Since you may not know the cause of the fault beforehand, contact your trusted automotive mechanic. That is the only option if you cannot work under the hood or dont have the tools to do it.

Inspect And Clean The Ground Connections

If the conductivity test fails, check the condition of the ground connections in your Acadia. Inspect the connectors of the ground cables for any signs of rust or corrosion. Clean the contacts with a sandpaper or wire brush. You may also have to remove the alternator and clean the ground contact area on the alternator and on the engine block.

The Electronic Control Unit

The electronic control unit handles the electronic system by regulating how the electrical power in the car is allocated. It essentially controls the electrical energy generated by the cars alternator. It is also responsible for detecting when the car battery needs to be charged and when it changes the cars energy flux.

I Have A 2013 Gmc Acadia The Service Battery Charging

Hello I am your Just Answer Expert. I have over 35 years experience repairing Ford and Domestic Vehicles.I am a Ford Master and ASE Master Certified Technician.I worked at a local speed shop on the weekends for several years. If it just getting a second opinion or doing it yourself I am here to help.

Do you know where he got the part from ?

These charging systems are computer controlled. If the part is not an OEM part and one that was obtained from the local parts store, this may be the cause of the failure.

These systems are sensitive to replacement part not of the OEM type.

If this is an OEM part then the ECM may have an internal failure.

I do not see any specific Service Bulletins or Recalls related to this. Yo may have to make a trip to the dealershiop to have this looked at

I would highly suspect there is an internal fault within the alternator circuity that is not compatible with the OEM system.

You may want to have the mechanic source an alternator from the dealership

The OEM unit is more expensivwe also

What Is Battery Charging System

The battery charging system varies with cars depending on how old the car is. The charging system in most cars comprises the electronic control unit or the computer, the battery, the alternator, and the wiring.

Cars made before the 1990s had charging systems that needed a voltage regulator to optimize the alternators function. So once the cars engine started running, the alternator generates the electricity, and the voltage moved through the cars electrical system. The battery light in this system comes on whenever there is an imbalance in the voltage.

As cars became more advanced, car manufacturers found replacing the voltage regulators with a computer that provides accurate voltage readings. With modern battery charging systems, the battery light would be illuminated when the computer detects an alteration in the systems voltage.

Lets look at how these components work together as a system:

How Urgent Is A Battery Recharge

The battery provides the power for the car to start. So, your car wont turn on if the battery is dead. Thats why its best to charge the battery as soon as possible in case you need to use the car in an emergency.

You should also get the battery tested to see if it has any other issues that could harm the battery life span.

Power Loss Of The Battery

2012 Acadia Complete Rear AC Kit CRK

Power loss or low voltage of the battery is the most common reason. When your battery is old, and there isnt enough juice left, it loses its capability to work, and the components that run through battery power dont get the energy to run.

Solution: When youre facing service battery charging system problems, test the battery first. For that, youll require a Multimeter. You can get a Multimeter at a meager price in any auto store or online.

Generally, battery power below 12.6V means your battery is the issue. Most of the time, the battery is checked while turning on the vehicle. The best way to check the battery is by checking it both in on and off condition.

When you see the voltage is slightly below 12 Volts while your vehicles engine is on, it doesnt necessarily mean the battery requires attention. Recheck the battery when the engine is off. At this point, if the battery is running lower than 12.6Volts, its time to replace the big boy.

What Does Service Battery Charging System Mean

A service battery charging system means that the vehicle is running solely on battery power. If your battery starts to run out, and the charging system cannot handle enough power, it wont be able to operate and you will soon have a dead battery.

If you hear a beep when your car is being started, that means the battery died and you should bring it to a trusted mechanic to get it replaced. Please be aware that your car might have a battery light and/or check the charging system light. To learn what these warning lights mean, be sure to check your owners manual.

Setting Problem Of The Ecu

How to Eliminate Battery Charging System Problems

In some cases, its just the ECU showing the message for its own problem. When you diagnose all the components thoroughly and find no problem, the ECU fault may be the reason.

Solution: To fix this, reset the ECU. Firstly, turn off your vehicle and disconnect the battery. Wait for half an hour after disconnecting and reconnect afterward. This process will reset the ECU itself, and youre good to go.

Check The Continuity Of Connecting Cables

Cables are the next to check if the battery has no problems. Positive cable to the battery may stiffen over time and break, causing a charging error. Use the multimeter to check for continuity. If you hear the buzzer sound, the cables are in good condition. Or if not, clean the clips and test again. Replace the wire if the problem persists.

Why Is The Battery Light On On My Acadia

If your Acadias battery light came on while you were driving, but before you parked, it could be the alternator. If you didnt see a battery light, and now the vehicle is dead when you go to start it, the first thing that you need to look at is the battery. You can take it up to the local parts store and have it tested.

In some Acadias, you may need to re-enter a security code to get your radio to work again. Check for this code in your owners manual it will usually be either a sticker or small card in the booklet. If you cant find it, call GMC and they will give you the code for free.

How To Check If The Ground Connection Is Good

You can check the quality of the ground connection in Acadia by doing a conductivity test between the negative terminal of the battery and the engine. Take a multimeter, change its settings to ohms symbol. Touch one probe to the negative terminal of the battery, and the other probe to any exposed metal part of the engine. The reading should be at or very close to zero ohms. Do the same between the negative terminal of the battery and exposed metal part of the alternator.

What Should I Do If My Battery Light Is On

If the battery light comes on the logical thing to do is park and take some time to check and inspect the vehicle. A check battery light might look simple but it can as well lead to unimaginable damage.

If the check battery light comes on, even the radiator fan is at risk of not working. Apart from the radiator fan, the alternator is driven by a serpentine belt and if it breaks then other components of the cooling system could be affected as well.

If the cooling system stops working, the engine is at the risk of overheating. When the engine overheats then many other damages can happen to engines and other parts.

If you ever notice that the service battery charging system light is on these are things you can try doing

  • check for loose drive belt
  • check for loose battery terminal cable
  • test for a faulty or bad alternator
  • Check for corroded wires and connectors
  • These four points would lead you to identify why the battery light on the dashboard of your vehicle is on. Do not continue driving until you fix any of these problems if you notice them in your car.

Doing the necessary checks will help you to reset the service battery charging system light whenever it comes on. If you still have any more questions please use the comment sections to as us.
