So Is Battery Storage There Yet
1. Battery plus inverter
At $800-$900/kWh for systems on the low end of the price spectrum, and with payback periods approaching 10 years in the right combinations of circumstances, were close enough for lots of Australians to justify making an investment in a battery retrofit, but not yet in the territory of mass appeal.
Note that this month we updated the electricity price details we use in our modelling, which has changed the results beyond just the battery price movements.
Also remember that this chart is meant to reflect the national situation as an amalgamated whole your individual situation may be conducive to a shorter payback period, so we encourage you to look into it for yourself.

Is My Solar System Battery Ready
The Sungrow Hybrid inverter installed without a battery connected.
Most existing solar systems can have energy storage added using an additional inverter or one of the many AC coupled batteries now available. Some companies may advertise a battery ready system, these systems are just like a common grid-connected solar system but use a hybrid inverter rather than a common solar inverter. Hybrid inverters have battery connections and controls built-in, which makes adding a battery much easier in the future. The downside is battery ready or hybrid inverters are typically 20-30% more expensive than a standard solar inverter. An additional problem is due to the rapid evolution in battery technology, if you install a hybrid inverter and want a battery several years later, a compatible battery may be difficult to find.
How Much Does A Home Solar Battery Cost
Costs vary significantly for solar batteries, but generally, the higher the battery capacity, the more you can expect to pay.
Here are typical battery costs for some common nominal capacity sizes .
- 5kWh: from $5000
- 10kWh: from $10,000
- 13kWh: from $12,000
As an example, one of the most popular batteries is the 14kWh Tesla Powerwall 2. This currently costs $13,700, plus installation costs which bring the total cost to about $15,000 .
The lower-end prices tend to be for a battery pack only . Higher-end prices often mean that the battery system has a built-in battery inverter and other integrated components as well. When getting quotes, make sure it’s clear whether the cost of a new inverter and extra electrical work are factored in.
It can be more cost-effective to buy a battery as part of an entire new solar panel system package than to retrofit it to an existing system, especially if the existing system is several years old it may need substantial upgrading to accommodate the battery.

Does The Tesla Powerwall Qualify For Any Incentives Or Rebates
Yes, the Tesla Powerwall does qualify for the battery storage incentives available in the U.S.
The biggest incentive is the federal solar tax credit, which will reduce the cost of a Powerwall installation by 26% – as long as it is paired with solar panels.
Aside from the federal tax credit, some states and utilities offer additional rebates and incentives. In some cases, these rebates, like Californias SGIP incentive and Green Mountain Powers Bring Your Own Device Program in Vermont, can cover almost 90% of the total cost of installing a Powerwall.
Connecting Batteries In Parallel Vs In Series

Now that you know the voltage of your installation and the battery capacity you need, its almost time to start looking at batteries! In your battery system, there are two ways to connect multiple batteries together in parallel or in series:
- In Parallel: Connecting batteries in parallel simply means that each batterys positive terminal is connected to the next batterys positive terminal . Batteries that are connected in parallel add up all their amp-hours together, allowing you to increase the total capacity of your battery bank.
- In Series: Connecting batteries in series means connecting the positive terminal of the first battery to the negative terminal of the next, and so on. When connecting in series, amp-hours dont increase, but voltage adds up amongst all the batteries. Its also possible to create a system where batteries are connected both in parallel and in series to both increase voltage and amp-hours!
We need 768 amp-hours for our 12 volt solar installation. If we connect in parallel, we could have two 12-volt 400 amp-hour batteries, giving us 800 amp-hours but keeping our 12 volt system. If we connect in series, we could have 2 6-volt 800 amp-hour, giving us a 12 volt battery system with 800 amp-hour capacity. Whether to connect in series or in parallel is a matter of what batteries are available and the structure of your solar and storage installation.

Are There Grants Available For Solar Batteries
Even though the solar battery storage system cost may not be moderate, you can still find some ways to save money. There are currently solar panel funding opportunities in the UK.
Through the Smart Export Guarantee you can earn money for exporting stored electricity back to the grid. Export tariffs vary with each energy supplier, but a good tariff is between 4-6p/kWh.
Be sure to check with your energy supplier if they allow stored energy to be exported.
Prior to the SEG, the Feed-in Tariff was in effect. The FIT rewarded homeowners for using renewable energy such as solar, as well as for exporting electricity to the grid. The FIT ended in 2019, and no new applications are processed. Those that are currently registered under the FIT will continue to receive payments until the end of their agreements.
Another way to reduce the cost of the investment is to make use of the VAT reduction. This reduction is only available to those over the age of 60, or those that are on income or disability benefits.
Usually, VAT is 20% but those that are eligible only need to pay 5% VAT on products like solar batteries.
If you live in Scotland, you can make use of the Home Energy Scotland Loan. This is an interest-free loan designed to help finance various energy-efficient improvements and renewable systems, including solar panels and solar batteries.
For specific eligibility criteria, you can visit the Home Energy Scotland website.
What Are The Different Types Of Solar Batteries
As you may have noticed, there are a variety of different types of batteries for solar panels. In this context, type refers mostly to the chemical composition of the battery. Lithium-ion batteries are the most common type, but you may also hear about lead-acid batteries, AGM batteries, gel batteries, deep cycle batteries and more.

What Does A Solar Batterys Efficiency Refer To
Efficiency in the context of solar batteries refers to how much energy is successfully stored and converted to useable electricity. Its currently impossible for a solar battery to be perfectly efficient, but some models come much closer than others. Take for example, Teslas Powerwall which has an efficiency of 92.5 per cent, meaning it loses 7.5 per cent of solar generated electricity in the storage process. This is still considerably higher than some models on the market.
Is Solar Battery Storage Good Value For Money
One of the most common questions we are getting at the moment is: is solar storage worth the money?
Our answer is to throw a question back at you: how much would you be prepared to spend to save, say, $1000 per year? Your answer to this determines when you are ready to buy Energy Storage
Lets say you install 5kWh of Energy Storage with an estimated lifetime of 10 years .
Let us also assume you will use all of that 5kWh each and every day.
Lastly, lets assume you are paying 30c per kWh for your power today.
Therefore, your 5kWh of storage would be expected to save $1.50 per day or $547.50 per year. The batteries themselves should last well in excess of 10 years although the capacity will slowly diminish over time.
If you were happy to accept that you would get your money back in say 7 years, you would, therefore, expect to pay around $3800 for that 5kW of storage. If you needed to get your money back in 5 years, it would be around $2700, and $5,500 for 10 years, and so on.
The cost of batteries starts at around $5,000 for smaller units such as Enphase and larger batteries such as the Tesla Powerwall start at around $16,000 for a 13.5 kWh battery that can be cycled every day. Because battery systems need to be accurately sized up to match your requirements we encourage you to make an enquiry. *Days of Authonomy is the number of days you need the system to operate when there is no power produced by the solar panels.
**Maximum short-term battery load is the approximated wattage that the battery is recommended to handle within a very short period, e.g. a couple of minutes. However, in the range of several seconds, the battery might sustain higher loads. This is the so-called surge load. Please always consult with the documentation of the battery vendor to get the correct value of this parameter.

In this table we try to take a holistic approach to representing battery value. When comparing battery systems, people in the industry typically speak in terms of dollars per kilowatt-hour of storage capacity. This is an easy shortcut for discussing battery value , but doesnt tell the full story as different batteries can tolerate different levels of use. For example, some batteries may only be charged/discharged once daily, while others can by cycled up to 2.7x per day without voiding the warranty.
To this end, weve also included figures on energy throughput. The energy throughput metric gives you an idea of how much youll pay for each kWh of energy that you pass through the battery over its lifespan.
Weve looked at two scenarios:
As noted in the footnotes of the image above, these figures are highly indicative and are intended to serve as a means of comparison between battery products they do not take into account battery degradation or efficiency.
What To Know When Installing A Home Battery Storage
You don’t need to install a battery for your solar panels to work, but a battery can help you get the most out of the energy your panels are generating.
Solar panels will create energy when there is daylight and you can use this solar electricity instead of buying it from your energy supplier. However, these panels don’t work at night time . So, what happens then?
If you don’t have a battery, you’ll switch back to using energy from the national grid – which will cost you money. If you have a battery installed, you can use any extra energy stored in the battery at night time. This reduces your reliance on the grid for electricity.

Solar Battery Storage: What You Should Consider
Ongoing MaintenanceA solar battery is not a simple ‘install and leave’ unit. It needs regular monitoring and maintenance to keep it working both efficiently and safely. This includes keeping it charged at an optimum level, carrying out regular power ‘boosts’ and gassing as well as ensuring it is stored at a correct temperature and protected from the weather.
Replacement PartsSolar batteries do not last as long as solar panels. Currently, a high quality solar battery will last for around 10-15 years, but this is dependant on how much you use it and ensuring it is maintained correctly. A battery can cost up to £2,000 so it is a significant expense to consider.
It’s not a complete energy solution The ultimate ambition for many is to make complete energy self-sufficiency a reality, without any reliance on the National Grid at all. While technology is certainly moving in the right direction and has made great strides in recent years, a solar battery system is still not a viable option to completely disconnect from the mains supply. Batteries have their faults, shelf-lives and limitations, so until things have progressed it’s necessary to have the option of a backup supply from the National Grid.
Factor : The Number Of Batteries You Need
Each storage installation is unique and everyones storage needs are different. For the most part, storage system sizing is less flexible than with solar panel systems. Its easy to add or subtract a single solar panel from a system design to finely tune the capacity of the install however, with most solutions on the market, its difficult to finely tune the size of battery you install. As a result, the cost of storage will vary significantly depending on the kilowatt-hours of energy you need to store and, thus, the number of batteries you install.

Deep Cycle Battery Banks 101
The battery bank is one of the most complicated and costly components of any off-grid power system.
Your battery storage needs to be large enough to supply power year-round. Nothing is more frustrating than suffering a power outage because your battery bank doesnt store enough charge.
On the other hand, too much battery capacity means your system wont be able to fully recharge. If your battery bank is too large, your batteries cant get the full charge, which can ruin the batteries.
Dialing in on the right battery bank is an important step to designing your off-grid system. You want to make sure you hit the sweet spot.

Do I Have To Have Solar Panels To Install A Battery
No. You can charge a home battery using electricity you buy from the grid. If you have a time-of-use electricity tariff you can save money by charging your battery when electricity is cheaper, and using the power from it so you’re not buying from the grid at pricey peak times.
But most people do not have time-of-use tariffs yet. These will become more widely available as smart meters are rolled-out. Economy 7 and Economy 10 are types existing of time-of-use tariffs, usually linked to storage heating systems.
If you have an electric car, smart meters mean that you’ll be able to use your to store and use electricity from the grid. See the best electric cars.
How Do Home Solar Batteries Work

The concept of home battery storage isn’t new. Off-grid solar photovoltaic and wind electricity generation on remote properties has long used battery storage to capture the unused electricity for later use. Storage batteries are increasingly popular with new solar installations, and it’s possible that within the next five to 10 years, most homes with solar panels will have a battery system.
A battery captures any unused solar power generated during the day for later use at night and on low-sunlight days. Installations that include batteries are increasingly popular. There’s a real attraction to being as independent as possible from the grid for most people it’s not just an economic decision, but also an environmental one, and for some it’s an expression of their wish to be independent of energy companies.
If your solar panel array and battery are large enough, you can run your home substantially on solar power. Using electricity from your battery can be cheaper per kilowatt-hour than using electricity from the grid, depending on the time of day and electricity tariffs in your area.
As of 2020, according to solar analytics company Sunwiz, there were about 110,000 home storage batteries installed in Australia, and about 9% of new solar installations in 2020 included a battery.
