What Is A Solar Inverter
Solar energy doesnt provide electricity in a format that your table lamp could be powered by. Inverters change the power produced by your solar panels into something you can actually use.
Think of it as a currency exchange for your power. You might have a fistful of yen, but until you stop and exchange it for USD, you cant pay for lunch stateside.
Your home is wired to conduct alternating current power. The electricity produced by solar panels is initially a direct current . Inverters change the raw DC power into AC power so your lamp can use it to light up the room.
Inverters are incredibly important pieces of equipment in a rooftop solar system. There are three options available: string inverters, microinverters, and power optimizers.

How Much Power Can The Pv350 Solar Panel Produce
This largely depends upon where in the world you use BLUETTI PV350.
The rule of thumb is simple, the more peak sun hours your area receives, the power your solar panel will be able to produce.
For example, if you were to use this solar panel in California it would produce a rough total of 564 kWh a year or on average 46 kWh a month. Obviously this amount fluctuates depending on the season.
If you were to use this solar panel in say Idaho, it would produce around 519 kWh a year.
As you can see, location matters.
However, keep in mind these averages were used using the Climatebiz Solar Calculator, which assumes a fixed setup with specific parameters which change depending on your input.
Being a portable solar panel you would move it to angle the sun for the most optimal power output.
How Many Solar Panels Do I Need
The number of solar panels you need depends on your total power needs, the wattage of a single solar panel, and the space you have on your roof, RV, or wherever you want to install them.
So, if you need a total of 900W to power your devices for 8 hours daily and one solar panel produces 50W, you can calculate the number of solar panels you need as follows:
- If one panel produces 50W, you get 6 hours of sunlight daily. In a day, one solar panel will produce 300W.
- The number of solar panels you need = the total amount of power you need for devices daily ÷ the total power generated by one panel daily.
- So, in this case, the number of solar panels you need = 900 ÷ 300 = 3 solar panels.
Theoretically, you need 3 solar panels. But to account for power losses due to various factors, you can get at least 4 or more solar panels instead of 3.

Local Solar Inverter Regulations
A good solar installer will know if your locality has specific rules governing the utilization of solar energy, and any rules and interconnection regulations concerning net metering. For instance, qualifying for net metering in many states requires your solar system to adhere to a stipulated maximum size or maximum amount of energy production as a percentage of your typical consumption.
The systems size limit typically depends on your inverter’s maximum energy production, since that determines the total amount of power your installation can feed back to the grid.
Sizing Solar Panels Batteries And Inverter For A Solar System
A true off-grid solar power system includes solar panels, a bank of batteries for energy storage and one or more inverters. This kind of system has no connection to the utility grid.
It is possible to have home battery storage, even when normally using the utility companys grid connection. The batteries automatically come on line if or when the normal electricity supply fails.
The usual procedure for sizing any kind of system is in this order:
Solar panel size is found by dividing daily load kWh by the locations irradiance to give solar kW rating. Inverter size is equal to solar panel rating. Battery size is found by multiplying the daily load by the number of days autonomy required, and dividing by system volts to give amp-hours.

Assessing The Required Power Inverter Specifications For Your System
The final piece of equipment you need to calculate the specifications for is the power inverter. In simple terms, the power inverter converts the DC power your solar panels generate into more practical AC power, which is what most electronic devices and appliances require.
Since, by this point, you would already know the maximum load wattage, you would want to choose a power inverter that would be capable of handling that wattage comfortably.
In the case of our example, the maximum load wattage is 100 watts, which means that you would just need to choose a power inverter that is rated at 100 watts, or slightly over, as spikes do occur.
You will also want to factor in your chosen power inverters voltage rating, as it is important to match the voltage rating of your power inverter to the voltage of your battery bank. So, if you were running a 12V battery bank as part of your solar power system, you will want to buy a 12VDC power inverter, as this will allow your inverter to convert that 12V DC power into 12V AC power.

What Kind Of Inverter Does My Solar Panel System Need
Electricity produced by your solar panels and left in your battery storage is useless without the proper equipment to harness all that energy. A solar panel system requires a method to transport and convert stored electricity into your home safely and efficiently.
Inverters are crucial to set up your solar panel system, and getting the right one can be a bit confusing without some help. This guide will introduce you to everything an inverter does, how it works, and, most importantly, how to choose one for your unique situation.
Evaluating Charge Controller Specifications For Your System
At this point, it is worth stressing that the amount of power your solar panels can generate will spike, as well as drop. Which is why you will need a charge controller with the appropriate specifications for your solar panel array and battery bank.
Charge controllers prevent overcharging, which can permanently damage the batteries in your system. The best charge controllers also prevent the reverse flow of current from the batteries to the solar panels, which can occur at night when the solar panels are not producing electricity.
To choose the correct charge controller for your solar panels and battery bank, you will need to assess the current, or amperage specs, of your solar panels. You can calculate this by dividing the wattage rating of your solar panels with the voltage.
For example, a 100 watt solar panel / 12V = 8.3 Amps.
When choosing a charge controller, you can always round up a bit however, you do not want to leave too much room, or you risk overcharging your batteries. In the case of our ongoing example, a 10A charge controller would do the trick.

How Does Irradiance Affect Solar Panels
Although there are several factors impacting solar panel power output, irradiance or the suns energy, is by far the biggest.
Read about solar panel efficiency on one of my blog posts.
Irradiance is measured in kilowatt-hours per square meter per day or year and varies considerably depending on your geographic location.
Irradiance values in kWh/m2/day are also known as peak-sun-hours and this is used by solar installers to work out how much energy a solar installation can generate.
It can be found from historical data using database lookups on sites like GlobalSolarAtlas. Simply enter your city and note your local peak-sun-hours see image below:
Chicago peak-sun-hours is almost the US average
The table below shows the irradiance values for 5 cities, both in the US and abroad:

Incidentally, the peak-sun-hours for Chicago is about the US average , so Ill use that in my calculations.
Selection Criteria: Factors That Define The Best Solar Kits

Solar panels with high power output typically charge batteries faster. Hence, their importance to the function of solar panel kits. But charging is not dependent on solar output wattage only charge controllers are also vital.
Solar charge controllers regulate the amount of power getting to the battery bank from the solar kit. In doing this, they do not use all the power from solar panels to charge the batteries. They convert only a part of it for charging, depending on their peak conversion efficiency.
A solar charge controller with high peak conversion efficiency directs more solar power towards charging. Hence, it will charge more efficiently. Generally, an MPPT solar charge controller is more efficient than a PWM as MPPTs pull more power from solar panels.
In trying to power your appliances with solar panel kits, you need a battery and an inverter. Why? Batteries discharge direct current and home appliances generally give off alternating current . Trying to power AC appliances with DC power is destructive. But since inverters convert DC to AC, you can power your AC appliances with solar panel kits if theres an inverter.

Why Do You Need An Inverter
Inverters convert the DC flowing from your battery into AC so that you can power AC home appliances with your off-grid solar setup.
The power that runs through the main power grid to supply homes with electricity flows in AC. Home appliances use AC to run.
On the other hand, the batteries connected to your solar setup flows in DC. Therefore, inverters have to convert DC to AC in order to power your home appliances with solar power.
The 4 Main Types Of Inverters
Solar Inverters Grid-connected solar inverters .
Battery Inverters Basic inverters used with batteries.
Hybrid Inverters Solar & battery inverter – battery ready.
Off-grid Inverter/Chargers Off-grid inverters which can also operate as powerful on-grid hybrid energy storage systems.

What Inverter Size Should I Get
Solar panel inverters come in different sizes, depending on how much electricity they can intake and output at a time. Knowing which size is right for you depends entirely on how much electricity you will be using throughout the day and how much storage you plan on having.
Consider what home appliances you own. You need to account for everything in your initial estimation, even something as small and mundane as a digital clock.
Another factor to consider is how often you will be using these devices. Ask yourself what you need from day to day.
Does Being On Or Off The Grid Matter
There are a few key differences to be aware of when going on or off the grid, so be wary!
Solar panel inverters on the grid are easier to set up since you dont need a battery bank. Not to mention, putting the electricity you produce onto the grid will be shaving tons of money off your electricity bill without worrying about battery life and what time of day you use your electronics.
However, being on the grid means power outages will affect you since the inverter shuts off for safety reasons. Youll also not be completely self-reliant since your home will still connect to the grid. Thats not necessarily a bad thing. But, its much more tempting to use electricity if youre not worried about battery storage and whatnot.
Inverters off the grid take a bit more to set up and require more planning. You need to consider your battery bank and how much electricity you can run during the day and night.
However, being completely self-reliant means you dont have to worry about electricity bills or power outages on the grid in case of emergencies. Itll be work, but you will have complete control and save a lot of money.
Lately, there have been hybrid setups with both an emergency battery bank and a connection to the grid. However, you will need to recognize this will cost more initially and require more planning. Despite this, finding a middle ground between both can be beneficial for those interested.

How We Picked And Tested
Aside from knowing the types and benefits of a pure sine wave, you should also check out certain factors when comparing your options so that you can get your hand in an incredible device that can convert DC to AC, which is what runs most appliances today. So, as youre reading 2000 watt pure sine wave inverter reviews, you can think about and look into the following factors when comparing your options
Size/output
At the very least, you should find an inverter that is equal or higher than your loads consumption and output requirements. In this case, you should check your power requirements. When done with that, you should also consider adding 15 percent of the total wattage requirements. The total to get from this calculation will give you an idea of the size of the inverter you need.
Battery power
In addition to the output or size, you should also think about the battery power when comparing your options. You must check that there will be enough power capacity on your batteries to operate your inverter with the electrical equipment.
Efficiency
It is one of the most important considerations to look into when buying a pure sine wave inverter. In this case, you might want to check the specifications of what youre buying before buying an inverter.
