The rule of thumb is simple, the more peak sun hours your area receives, the power your solar panel will be able to produce.

For example, if you were to use this solar panel in California it would produce a rough total of 564 kWh a year or on average 46 kWh a month. Obviously this amount fluctuates depending on the season.

If you were to use this solar panel in say Idaho, it would produce around 519 kWh a year.

As you can see, location matters.

However, keep in mind these averages were used using the Climatebiz Solar Calculator, which assumes a fixed setup with specific parameters which change depending on your input.

Being a portable solar panel you would move it to angle the sun for the most optimal power output.

How Many Solar Panels Do I Need

The number of solar panels you need depends on your total power needs, the wattage of a single solar panel, and the space you have on your roof, RV, or wherever you want to install them.

So, if you need a total of 900W to power your devices for 8 hours daily and one solar panel produces 50W, you can calculate the number of solar panels you need as follows:

  • If one panel produces 50W, you get 6 hours of sunlight daily. In a day, one solar panel will produce 300W.
  • The number of solar panels you need = the total amount of power you need for devices daily ÷ the total power generated by one panel daily.
  • So, in this case, the number of solar panels you need = 900 ÷ 300 = 3 solar panels.

Theoretically, you need 3 solar panels. But to account for power losses due to various factors, you can get at least 4 or more solar panels instead of 3.

Which Type Of Solar Power Inverters Should I Choose

When it comes to choosing a solar inverter, there is no honest blanket answer. Which one is best for your home or business? That depends on a few factors:

  • How complex is your solar array design? If your solar array has many north-facing solar panels, you will likely have some shade mitigation issues. Those north-facing panels will receive less sunlight than panels with southern exposure. That level of complexity rules out the standard string inverter as those northern panels will reduce the overall power production of the entire string of panels. A good bet for this situation would be either the optimized string inverter or, better yet are microinverters.
  • Is your system grid-tied? Depending on how the system ties to the grid, you may be better off with a hybrid inverter that can handle different types of energy input at the same time. Suppose the system has a designated switch that shuts off access to the grid while the solar array is functioning. In that case, you might be okay with micro-inverters, power optimizer string inverters, or even a standard string inverterproviding there is not a battery backup system tied to the array.
  • Does the array include batter storage? If so, then a hybrid inverter is the best option, especially if the system is also grid-tied. The hybrid inverter is most capable of dealing with different types of energy at the same time.

    The final piece of equipment you need to calculate the specifications for is the power inverter. In simple terms, the power inverter converts the DC power your solar panels generate into more practical AC power, which is what most electronic devices and appliances require.

    Since, by this point, you would already know the maximum load wattage, you would want to choose a power inverter that would be capable of handling that wattage comfortably.

    In the case of our example, the maximum load wattage is 100 watts, which means that you would just need to choose a power inverter that is rated at 100 watts, or slightly over, as spikes do occur.

    You will also want to factor in your chosen power inverters voltage rating, as it is important to match the voltage rating of your power inverter to the voltage of your battery bank. So, if you were running a 12V battery bank as part of your solar power system, you will want to buy a 12VDC power inverter, as this will allow your inverter to convert that 12V DC power into 12V AC power.

    Although there are several factors impacting solar panel power output, irradiance or the suns energy, is by far the biggest.
