Wayne Wss30v: Best Battery Backup
Most battery backup pumps dont offer a high flow rate to pump water and last only as long as the battery does. Essentially, youre paying for redundancy to keep water out of your basement when the primary sump pump loses power. Like other submersible sump pumps, you can expect quiet operation from the Wayne WSS30VN. The primary pump has a powerful 1/2 hp motor that can move up to 5,100 GPH, almost as much as our top pick, the Wayne CDU980E.
For such an expensive bundle, it doesnt come with some vital components like a battery and a check valve. The check valve is usually a separate $10$30 purchase for sump pump installations, but buying a battery for the backup pump adds around $275 to the overall cost. This is a big detractor if you want to save money.
A check valve is a one-way valve between your sump pump system and the discharge pipe. It keeps leftover water from flowing back into your home after the pump turns off.
Even though the battery backup sump pump is a nice feature, its unnecessary unless your house has a history of simultaneous power outages and flooding. Still, if you must have a battery backup, we think the Wayne WSS30V is an excellent option.
What Kind Of Pump Do I Need
As we previously stated, sump pumps are immensely valuable for homes that are located in areas that experience frequent heavy rains or flooding. Similarly, they can be used as a safety precaution in the event of a plumbing emergency such as a burst pipe. The pump is placed in the lowest lying area of the basement, which is referred to as a sump pit. Excess water drains into the sump pit and the pump transports it out of the pit and away from the house.
There are a few different types of sump pumps available. Depending on your needs, budget, location and house structure. They include:
Primary Sump Pumps – These pumps are commonly used for home installations. They are able to pump out a maximum of a few thousand gallons per hour. Primary sump pumps come in two varieties.
The pedestal pump is a type of pump that is not placed inside of the sump pit but is rather situated in a location slightly above the water. These pumps are efficient because of their flexibility, however the motor is exposed and therefore cannot be submerged in water.
The submersible pump is intended to be placed directly inside of the water in the sump pit. These are generally more efficient and also more effective as they can easily detect excess water issues. Additionally they are more aesthetically pleasing because they are submerged at all times.
Key Features Of Wayne Backup Pumps
A reed vertical float switch is used for the Wayne Battery pump models. Since the float is vertical and is to be attached to the discharge pipe, it takes no additional room in the sump pit. The magnetic reed float switch is more reliable than a mechanical vertical float switch. The switch turns the pump on as a magnet moves up and down passing two contacts. When the contacts touch each other the circuit is completed and the switch activates the pump.
An audible alarm sounds for each model when the battery backup system is in use. LED lights are also used to indicate battery status. A green light indicates the battery is charging. A yellow light indicates the voltage is low that the battery is partially charged. A red light indicates the battery is depleted and needs to be recharged or replaced.
The battery charger keeps the battery in ready state but does not over charge it. The battery charger for all models is less than 1 amp so it takes at least three days to recharge a fully depleted battery.

How Long Does A Battery Run A Backup Sump Pump
A new or well-maintained deep-cycle battery rated at 75 amp-hours will run a backup sump pump for around six hours without stopping. That’s about two days of continuous, real-world use. Add or remove about one hour of continuous run time for each 10 amp-hours of higher or lower battery rating. Poorly cared-for batteries, as well as older batteries, will perform worse.

Wayne Backup Pump Models Available
The three Wayne battery backup sump pumps that used to be available are the ESP15, the ESP25 and the ESP45. But Wayne no longer makes the ESP15 and the ESP45. But the good news is the ESP25 is still available and has been upgraded to model ESP25n.
The Wayne ESP15 is comparable to a 1/6 HP primary sump pump and at a 10 foot lift can pump 12 gallons per minute or 720 gallons per hour. The pump housing, volute, impeller and shaft are made from thermoplastic. Wayne no long makes this model.
The Wayne ESP25 is comparable to a ¼ – 1/3 HP primary sump pump. The old ESP25 at a 10 foot lift can pump 38 gallons per minute or 2,280 gallons per hour. The pump housing, volute, impeller and shaft are made from thermoplastic. This model is upgraded to the new ESP25n. The old model is still available however, we are not sure how long though.
Learn more about the Wayne ESP25n. Read the Wayne ESP25n review below.

Can You Add Battery Backup To An Existing Sump Pump
Yes, many brands sell battery backup pumps that sit next to an existing sump pump. The backup pump isnt very powerful and doesnt replace your existing pump.
It removes water when the power goes out but eventually stops when the battery dies. Only a primary pump with an uninterrupted power supply can keep pumping in the long term.

Recommended Battery For The Wayne Wss30v:
The manufacturer recommends the Wayne WSB1275 75Ah AGM Sealed Lead Acid Battery for use with this sump pump. The battery is pre-charged and requires no maintenance.
- If your sump pump runs once per minute, this battery will give you 23 hours of pumping to protect your property.
- If your sump pump runs ones every five minutes, youll get 100 hours.
- If your sump pump runs once every ten minutes then youll have 172 hours of protection from flooding.
- Supports up to eight hours of pumping continuously.
This battery is priced higher than generics and bargain brands but youll have the added peace of mind of knowing that youre using the recommended battery thats the best on the market for this application. Thats worth a little extra upfront cost in my opinion, when it comes to avoiding serious damage in your home. I have enough life experience at this point to say that buying the best batteries available is generally a good strategy. Especially when youre talking about powering something as important as a sump pump.
Now that you know what kind of battery youll need, lets get back to talking about the pump itself.
How Do Wayne Model Backup Pumps Compare
Many of you are familiar with the three original battery backup sump pump models so we include them in this comparison, but if you are intereted in the only battery backup sump pump model Wayne makes right now, the ESP25n model, you can jump to that review.
The new ESP25n weighs 20 pounds. That is more pounds that the original ESP25 model. The differece in weigt is the carbon steel for the pump housing and the cast iron base. The ESP15 weighed less weighing in at 9 pounds. The ESP25 weighs 13 pounds and the ESP45 weighs 30 pounds. Since the ESP15 was very light weight it can be installed above a primary pump by cutting into the discharge pipe and using a T-connector the pump will hang in midair. The ESP25 can not be installed in line with the discharge pipe. It has to rest on the bottom of the pit or an L bracket for support. The heavier the pump the stronger and more durable it is it has more pumping capacity per minute.
The new ESP25n is 7.25 inches wide so does not take a lot of basin space. The ESP15 has the smallest width – 5 .5 inches wide. The ESP25 has 6 inches wide and the ESP45 is 8 ¾ inches wide.
The ESP25n runs only by battery. Only the Wayne ESP45 backup pump runs on both AC or DC power. This capability is especially helpful when your primary pump fails and the electrical power is on. The pump will not use any battery power if electrical power is available.
The Wayne ESP25n is an updated model for the original ESP25. Here’s what’s changed.

Best Sump Pumps Of 2022
Its a submersible sump pump, making it quieter than pedestal-type pumps. This is useful if you spend a lot of time in your basement and dont want a noisy pump to interrupt your movies and projects.
Durability is another standout feature of the Wayne CDU980E. It has a cast iron and stainless steel body that protects the internal motor from water damage. Wayne is confident enough in this design that the pump has a five-year warranty, the longest warranty among sump pumps.
Because this submersible pump rests in the bottom of a sump pit, its harder to reach for regular maintenance than a pedestal pump. This isnt enough of an inconvenience for most folks but matters if you have trouble bending down or laying on the floor for occasional debris removal.
The Wayne CDU980E costs around $170, making it more expensive than most competitors we looked at. Still, we think the powerful motor and durable design are worth the extra cash.
The Wayne company has over 70 years of experience making water pumps, making it one of the most experienced companies we reviewed. The company takes its name from Fort Wayne, Indiana, where it operated for the first 63 years of its existence.

Superior 9: Best Value
We chose this pump because its an upgraded version of the popular Superior 91250. The main difference is that the 92250 has an automatic switch, so you dont have to activate it manually when water starts to build up. Its around $10 more expensive, but the automatic operation is worth every penny.
This small sump pump doesnt have a particularly powerful motor, only 1/4 hp, but moves up to 1,800 GPH. This is almost as much water per dollar as more expensive pumps. We also like that this unit has a small size thats easy to move and lift out of the sump basin for maintenance.
Unfortunately, the cheap sump pumps light frame comes from a plastic construction that isnt as durable as the metal casings on other brands. You might replace this more often than an expensive model, but its an excellent option to save money for other home improvements.
