Electric Car Batteries Lasting Longer Than Predicted Delays Recycling Programs
Journalists test drive the Nissan Ariya in Stockholm.
Nissan/Sebastien Mauroy
Almost all of the batteries weve ever made are still in cars, said Nissan executive Nic Thomas.
And weve been selling electric cars for 12 years, he added.
The worry was once what the world would do with millions of spent electric vehicle batteries after they no longer powered the cars and vans they propelled. But this glut of EV batteries has not yet materializedNissan has been making the electric Leaf since 2010and automotive industry initiatives to recycle the lithium-ion cells bundled in EV batteries are slow to go mainstream in Europe and the U.S.
Electric cars have sophisticated battery management systems that guard the long-term health of their batteries. Most manufacturers offer battery warranties of seven or eight years or around 100,000 miles of driving, but theres an industry expectation that EV batteries will last longer than that they should outlive the cars themselves.
EV batteries consist of more than 2,000 individual lithium-ion cells working together. Battery management systems, or BMS, allow the cells to be gently topped up, preserving efficiency and life EV lithium-ion batteries live much longer than lithium-ion phone or laptop batteries which sport less sophisticated BMS.

Why Recycle Old Batteries
You might be wondering why some companies and places might pay you to recycle auto batteries.
To put it simply, batteries can be harmful for the environment when theyre thrown away even those small batteries you find in toys, remote controls, and other household items.
Companies that are eco-friendly are happy to help you recycle your vehicle batteries to help save the environment.
They have practices in place that follow regulations about recycling batteries to make sure theyre broken down and disposed of properly, and that any materials that can be saved are saved to use for other things.
Thats why some recycling centers and companies are willing to offer incentives to people who help the environment by recycling their old auto batteries.

How Are Batteries Recycled At Oreilly
Our parts professionals are trained on how to dispose of batteries correctly, and follow the guidelines for careful handling, storage, and collection specified by our OReilly Battery Recycling Program. With certain states like California encouraging customers to return dead household batteries, OReilly has also taken steps to ensure all types of batteries can be disposed of properly and recycled where possible. When household or dry cell batteries are recycled through our stores, we take the time and care to mark and date-label these items and place them in hazardous waste containers with lids to ensure proper, isolated storage for these types of batteries.Once batteries have been placed in the appropriate waste bucket, our parts professionals wear protective gear to inspect each battery, and take the needed steps for proper storage. For dry cell batteries, we ensure that each terminal contact is taped and sealed in a plastic bag to prevent contact with other batteries or metals. After they have been stored, all batteries are transported from the stores to the nearest OReilly distribution center . There, they will be reclaimed or recycled by an independent vendor specializing in sustainable and consistent battery recycling.

Different Kinds Of Batteries
Single-use batteries are usually alkaline batteries with zinc, manganese or lithium chemistry. Rechargeable batteries are commonly nickel cadmium, nickel metal hydride or lithium-ion. Rechargeable batteries are found in the same shapes and voltage as single-use batteries, as well as specifically designed for laptops, mobile phones and electronic equipment.
Buying rechargeable batteries is a great way to reduce battery waste. Each battery can be recharged up to 1000 times, saving you money and reducing pollution from discarded batteries. There are many retailers who sell battery rechargers, which conveniently take less than 15 minutes to recharge.

Recycling Car Battery Process
To begin the recycling process, used batteries are collected from drop-off locations and transported to recycling centers.
- There, the lead is separated from the polypropylene and fed into a furnace to be melted down.
- The lead is then reused to manufacture new batteries. The polypropylene is washed and also recycled.
- Lastly, acid is treated and neutralized.
- New automotive batteries are typically made with up to 80 percent recycled materials.

Environmental Impact Of Lead Acid Battery Recycling
At first glance, lead acid battery recycling seems like the crowning achievement of the recycling industry. According to trade groups, 99% of all lead acid batteries are safely recycled making them the most recycled consumer product in America.
But when you look into how some lead batteries are recycled, problems start to crop up.
In many countries, unregulated small businesses recycle the lead in unsafe and polluting ways. The consequences may be greater than we had previously estimated.
According to a report from UNICEF, children around the world are being poisoned by lead on a massive and previously unrecognized scale. One in three children around 800 million children globally have blood lead levels associated with developmental issues such as decreased intelligence and learning problems.
The report cites the unsound recycling of used lead-acid batteries as one of the most concerning sources of the lead exposure.
Of course, we shouldnt stop recycling lead batteries. But we need to recycle them better at a global scale. The public health consequences are enormous.

Preface: Ev Batteries Can Outlive The Cars They Power
When mass production electric cars began to nibble away petrol and diesel sales, there were concerns in some quarters that their batteries would need regular replacement. Some looked at mobile phone batteries, which often experience significantly reduced performance after only a couple of years, and worried a similar paradigm might apply to EV power packs.
The reality has been fairly far from that, however: EV batteries do indeed degrade over time, holding less charge after several years than they did when new, but the rate of degradation is far less significant than was expected by some, with capacities dropping only by 2% or so each year in most cases.
And while there have been isolated cases of failing batteries, and they are expensive to replace when this happens, equivalent fates can befall petrol and diesel engines in rare instances but snapped timing chains and the like havent prevented people from buying cars with internal engines. Car makers also offer lengthy EV powertrain warranties, with policies typically guaranteeing that these batteries will maintain 70% of their capacity for seven or eight years and 100,000 miles.
These are far lengthier warranties than the policies typically applied to the cars as a whole, and in many cases EV batteries will outlive the vehicles to which they are fitted.
How Much Can You Get For A Used Car Battery
There are lots of factors that will determine how much money youll make selling a battery.
These include things like:
- Whether the battery is dead.
- How much charge, if any, the battery has.
- How much it cost originally
- And where you plan to sell it.
Now, Ive included prices for each place below, so you can get a sense of how much money to expect.

Electric Cars: What Will Happen To All The Dead Batteries
“The rate at which we’re growing the industry is absolutely scary,” says Paul Anderson from University of Birmingham.
He’s talking about the market for electric cars in Europe.
“It’s something that’s never really been done before at that rate of growth for a completely new product,” says Dr Anderson, who is also the co-director of the Birmingham Centre for Strategic Elements and Critical Materials.
While electric vehicles may not emit any carbon dioxide during their working lives, he’s concerned about what happens when they run out of road – in particular what happens to the batteries.
“In 10 to 15 years when there are large numbers coming to the end of their life, it’s going to be very important that we have a recycling industry,” he points out.
While most EV components are much the same as those of conventional cars, the big difference is the battery. While traditional lead-acid batteries are widely recycled, the same can’t be said for the lithium-ion versions used in electric cars.
EV batteries are larger and heavier than those in regular cars and are made up of several hundred individual lithium-ion cells, all of which need dismantling. They contain hazardous materials, and have an inconvenient tendency to explode if disassembled incorrectly.
Recent proposals from the European Union would see EV suppliers responsible for making sure that their products aren’t simply dumped at the end of their life, and manufacturers are already starting to step up to the mark.
Other Ways You Can Help
- Buy Rechargeable Batteries and a Battery Charger. Devices powered by ordinary AAA, AA, C, D, and 9-volt batteries can be powered by rechargeable batteries of those sizes.
- Look for Portable Electronic Devices that Do Not Use Batteries. Some devices instead use a capacitor that is recharged, typically by shaking the device or by normal use rather than batteries. See Alternative Power Products for details.
- Reduce. Use single-use batteries wisely to avoid unnecessary replacement and disposal.

What Are The Environmental Impacts
The question of the environmental impacts of battery manufacturing is perhaps even more important. Even if there are enough materials, the impacts of their use must be seriously considered.
Studies show that battery manufacturing can have serious impacts in terms of human toxicity or ecosystem pollution. On top of this is the need to monitor labour conditions in certain countries. Furthermore, analysing environmental impacts requires full knowledge of battery composition and manufacturing processes, but this information is difficult to obtain for obvious reasons related to industrial property.
