When Marine lithium batteries are compared with lead-acid batteries, lithium batteries can be charged at a higher current and more efficiently. That means they can charge more quickly. Lithium-ion batteries have other advantages: they do not need to be recharged if they are partially discharged. Unlike lead-acid batteries, lead-acid batteries sulphate when partially charged, which greatly reduces performance and life.
We recommend using multiple chargers so that each 12V battery can be charged separately to ensure they are balanced and fully charged. Ideally, use a charger with a lithium charging profile, but most AGM charging profiles will work fine.
LiFePO4 Marine batteries can also be charged using most alternators. Depending on the quality of the alternator, it should be used with LiFePO4 batteries. A low-quality AC generator with poor voltage regulation will cause the BMS to disconnect the LiFePO4 battery. If the BMS disconnects the battery, the alternator may be damaged. To protect your LiFePO4 battery and alternator, be sure to use a compatible high quality alternator or install a voltage regulator.

Proper storage of a trolling motor battery can extend its lifecycle. So here are some helpful tips on how to properly store one:
- Before you store a trolling motor battery, always make sure you have charged it. If you store it without charging it, there is going to be a sulphate build-up which can cause corrosion. As a result, your battery is not going to hold much charge. Also if the battery is corroded, its life reduces significantly.
- When a battery is stored in a hot environment, it is going to expand pushing out energy more quickly. So its discharge rate is going to be high and it may also lose its electrolyte. If you store in a cold environment, this is going to result in a low discharge rate. So the battery is forced to work harder straining the battery and as a result, reducing its lifespan. For a 12 volt trolling motor, the amp hour capacity of the battery should be equal to or greater than the pounds of thrust of the trolling motor, as shown below:
- 20 to 55 lb motor thrust: 50Ah battery capacity
- 70 to 112 lb motor thrust: 100Ah battery capacity
When in doubt, get a battery with at least 100Ah, since that is usually enough to last a whole day with a 12 volt motor, unless youre mostly planning to spend only a few hours on the water at any one time.
For 24 or 36 volt trolling motors, its best to get a single 24 or 36 volt lithium battery, since that reduces total battery weight, and also costs less than getting several 12 volt batteries to set them up in a series.
The main exception to this is if you have a dual voltage trolling motor, such as the Garmin Force or Lowrance Ghost, which can operate with either 24 or 36 volts.
The nice thing about these trolling motors is that you can change their thrust by changing the voltage of the battery system, in which case its great to have three 12 volt batteries that you can set up as either a 24 or 36 volt system.
V 50ah Lightweight Lithium Batteries
These small lithium batteries are great for kayaks, canoes, and inflatables.
Although there are smaller and lighter batteries available with less than 50Ah capacity, they are not always suitable for a trolling motor because of the maximum current a BMS can deliver. Make sure to check the amp draw of your trolling motor.

Do Lithium Marine Batteries Need A Special Charger
Yes, you do need a special charger for lithium marine batteries. In general, you tend to need a special charger for any type of marine battery due to its unique design. But, lithium marine batteries need a special charger because they require charging in series with a multi-bank charger.
A multi-bank charger is a type of charger that allows all the batteries in the chain to charge simultaneously. While these batteries charge at the same time, they are completely independent of one another, so the batteries charge on their own.
You can use a regular battery charger to charge your lithium batteries, but this isnt ideal. If you have to do this, it is very important that you set the voltage on the charger to the absolute max. This allows your lithium batteries to charge to the best of their ability.

- All RMA shipments must be sent with proper Hazardous Goods Paperwork. Shipping your battery back to Abyss Battery without proper paperwork and RMA identification may lead to the loss of your item or the denial of your warranty claim.
The customer bears the responsibility to properly package the warrantied item so that it will not be damaged during the shipping process. We recommend keeping the original boxing or request a replacement box and use a approved hazmat certified shipping department. Abyss Battery will not bear responsibility for the customer not following the regulated rules and guidelines in returning a battery for a warranty claim. This includes the classification of certifying your warranty claimed item as Dangerous Goods along with the proper packaging, labeling, and using qualified shipper to return the product back to us for assessment.

Bms Battery Management System
Besides buying your battery from a trusted supplier, make sure it is also equipped with a built-in Battery Management System.
A BMS will preserve the lifespan of a lithium battery and ensure its safety. It will protect your battery from a voltage that is too high or too low. It will stop discharging your battery if the temperature is too high or prevent charging in freezing temperatures.
It also has protection from high current, so make sure the maximum current output is higher than your motors maximum amp draw.
A BMS will also look after individual battery cells to make sure they are balanced and have the same voltage.

How Long Do Lithium Trolling Motor Batteries Last
Run time testing has shown that lithium batteries tend to last 30% to 100% longer than lead acid batteries with comparable amp hour rating. For example, tests by Flux Power showed that their lithium battery has a run time that is 45% longer than a similarly rated lead acid battery.
The reason why lithium batteries last longer with the same amount of charge is because their voltage output remains constant until they are completely discharged, while the output voltage of lead acid batteries rapidly declines during discharge, and falls below the required threshold long before they are empty.
In other words, a lithium battery can keep on running your trolling motor until it is 100% depleted, while a lead acid battery stops being able to do so before it reaches even 70% depletion.
Its also worth noting that because of this, the amount of runtime that you get for your trolling motor per pound of battery weight is much higher for lithium marine batteries, compared to that of lead acid marine batteries.
Finally, lithium batteries also have a longer battery lifespan, as they degrade less during the charge/discharge cycles. This usually translates into a 2 to 3 years longer lifespan, which is important to keep in mind when deciding whether their higher price is justified.
