Can I Replace My Tesla Model 3 12v Battery Myself

Replacing The Battery Pack On A Tesla Model 3 Costs More Than You Think

The answer is yes, as Tesla has released guides on DIY maintenance. However, if you do not have the tool, skill, or time, you can drive to a service center, or an authorized Tesla mobile technician can come down to where you are. You must note that this will increase the cost of your battery replacement.

How Much Does It Cost To Replace Your Tesla Model 3 12v Battery

The cost depends on when you need to do the replacement and where you are sourcing the replacement 12v battery from. If your Tesla Model 3 is still under warranty, the cost to replace the 12v battery is zero. However, the story is different if you do not have a warranty cover.

You may spend between $100 and $500, including the cost of parts and professional labor. A high-performance 12v battery costs more, so if you upgrade your Model 3s electrical demand, you may have to pay more for your replacement battery.

You can shop for a 12v battery on Amazon, where you can compare prices and brands. You can also shop in a physical store. The cost of the 12v battery varies from one brand to another. Note that the 12v battery is not made by Tesla, but you shouldnt have any problem finding a suitable replacement.

Tesla Model X Battery Replacement Cost What You Can Expect To Pay

Weve honestly not seen any repair bills for the Model X that give details on a full battery replacement, but its safe to assume that the price is similar to battery replacement on the Model S.

With reports of Model S repairs for the same issue taking between 3-13 hours, battery repair labor costs on the Model X could run at about $500-$2,500 at a labor charge of $175-$200 per hour. These numbers really depend on the reason for the battery replacement, as the replacement itself shouldnt be an overly complicated procedure.

A new Tesla battery for a Model X with a 100kWh battery pack should run over $13,500 if we base our pricing scheme solely on current $135 per kWh estimates. As Tesla almost exclusively uses remanufactured packs, the true price should be slightly lower. This scenario places our lowest Model X battery replacement estimate at $13,000 for the battery, $100-200 for miscellaneous parts, and a potential $500-$600 for labor. In other words, the lowest estimated price for an out-of-pocket, uncomplicated battery replacement on the Model X is about $14,000.

Tesla Model 3 12v Battery Replacement Cost

A Canadian man who purchased a $140,000 Tesla Model S claims the battery died and Tesla said its going to cost $26,000 to replace. The man, Mario Zelaya, posted a video about the fiasco to TikTok, causing quite the uproar as he detailed how hes locked out of his own car thanks to the battery dying.

Learn why Stellantis CEO isnt a huge fan of EVs here.

Zelaya is mad, claiming a recall is necessary. His Model S is a 2013, so its only about a decade old. The man says 2013 and 2014 Teslas have problems with fluid from the AC system leaking onto the battery, which in turn ruins the cells to the point the whole battery needs to be replaced. In his TikTok video, Zelaya claims to have involved Transport Canada in the matter, claiming the government agency is going to be investigating the American automaker.

Here comes the real kicker: Zelaya says his vehicle warranty expired a year ago, so hes on the hook for the full replacement cost of the battery. The man cant sell the car since he apparently has the title locked inside. In case youre wondering, keeping the title inside a vehicle is incredibly stupid, so please dont do this.

Just buy the EV: we hear that all the time. We also hear how owning an electric car lowers the overall cost of ownership versus those dirty dinosaurs which run on gasoline or diesel. Then stories like this one come out and we really have to wonder what the switch to electric cars is really all about.

How Much Does Tesla Supercharging Cost

If you charge at a Tesla supercharger, the cost is typically about $0.25 per KW if you purchased a Model S or Model X after January 2017. Supercharging is free for cars purchased before, January 2017. The average supercharger cost of $0.25 per KW also applies for Model 3. A full recharge to about 250 miles of range costs approximately $22.00. More typically, a half charge would cost about $11.00. Cost varies based on the region of the country and local electricity rates.

Is The Tesla Battery Replacement Covered By A Warranty

After looking at the price for a Tesla battery replacement, you are likely trying to figure out how to save as much money as possible on this vital component. That leads you to wonder if you can have the replacement covered by the warranty.

Tesla currently offers an 8-year/150,000-mile battery warranty. Its void as soon as one of these milestones is met. While it has a warranty, the battery is only covered if there is a proven manufacturing defect. If the high voltage cable or a battery cell fails, Tesla will cover the cost of the parts and labor. You may also be able to get reimbursement for other related expenses, such as towing or a loaner vehicle.

This battery warranty does have some exceptions worth noting. If you drive a pre-2020 Model X or Model S, the battery warranty is or 8 years or unlimited miles. However, if the car contains a 40 kWh or 60 kWh pack, the warranty is 8-year/125,000-mile instead.

Theres also a clause with the warranty that covers the replacement if its due to degradation. The battery is covered by the warranty replacement if it has lost more than thirty percent of its factory capacity. The only exception to this rule is the first Tesla Roadster, but these original models are no longer covered by the warranty anyway at this point.

Is Tesla Battery Cost Expensive

Yes, Teslaâs batteries are among the most expensive on the market but also some of the most advanced. The cost of a Tesla battery will vary depending on the size and type of vehicle. For example, replacing a Tesla battery for the Model S premium sedan costs around $13,000-$20,000.

A few things make the tesla battery expensive:

  • Tesla batteries are of higher quality, making them more durable and longer lasting.
  • Tesla batteries come with a warranty, which adds to the cost.
  • Tesla batteryâs production costs are high due to the companyâs focus on quality.
  • Tesla batteries are made with lithium-ion cells, which are more expensive than lead-acid cells.
  • Tesla batteries have a higher capacity than lead-acid batteries to store more energy.

However, Tesla batteries are designed to last for many years and miles, so they may ultimately save money in the long run.

Read Your Warranty Closely

Teslas warranty is designed to cover things like manufacturer defects that cause battery failure or drastically decreased performance through no fault of the driver. The companys warranty actually covers fire damage as well, even if a battery fire is caused by external factors.

If the damage to your Teslas battery pack isnt covered under warranty, itll get kicked over to insurance to pay some of the cost. The driver is left to pay the difference, if their insurance pays anything at all, out of pocket. If insurance wont pay up, youre stuck with the entire bill.

That can be compounded by the fact that Tesla sometimes suggests complete battery replacements for problems that dont require it. Automotive YouTuber Rich Rebuilds experienced that for himself when he helped someone avoid a $22,500 repair bill for a total battery replacement on their Model 3.

Tesla wanted to replace the whole pack, but after diagnosing the problem, replacing a couple of bad modules for only around $5,000 was a better fix. Stories like this and others have generated quite a lot of flack for Tesla and spurred discussions around a consumers right to repair similar to what happened when Apple released the iPhone.

Tesla Battery Replacement Costs Tips And Owner Lessons

This is part of the EV battery replacement cost series. If you have replaced the battery in your Tesla, we would love to hear from you.

âBatteryâ and âreplacementâ are some of the two scariest words for a Tesla owner. No one wants to discover that their EV needs a battery replacement because the battery is the most expensive part in the vehicle.

  • The bad news is the high cost associated with an EV battery replacement â weâll talk plenty more about that below. Aside from the material costs, the labor costs can add up.
  • The good news, however, is that battery replacements are a lot more rare than many people think. Most of the original 2012 Model S cars are still putting miles on their original batteries.

But the need for a replacement can happen. This article examines Tesla batteries, common reasons for replacement, and the typical costs associated with a high-velocity battery replacement. For the first few topics, weâll cover all Tesla models together. For the replacement section, weâll talk about each model separately â Model S, Model 3, Model Y.

How Does A Car Battery Work

TESLA MODEL 3 Battery 1129182

The battery in your vehicle is there to provide a jolt of electrical energy to start the engine and to provide engine-off accessory power for a limited amount of time. Once the engine is running, the alternator takes over to power the accessories and charge the battery. Car batteries typically feature six connected cells in a lead-acid formulation, or up to 12 cells in a 24-volt system found in heavy trucks or other large vehicles.

What Is The Cost Of A Tesla Battery Replacement

Tesla does not provide public information about the costs of replacing a damaged battery of any of their available models .

However, some owners whove replaced their battery pack at a Tesla Service Center have published their service invoices on social media. Based on that information, we can estimate average Tesla battery replacement costs.

Assuming a constant price for a Tesla battery replacement would be inaccurate. The money youll spend to replace the battery will depend on many factors, such as:

  • The battery cost itself
  • Miscellaneous expenses

Nowadays, it would be acceptable to estimate an average cost range of $13,000 for the most basic models and easy replacements to $20,000 for the more expensive models and complex replacements.

However, the exact amount would depend on the conditions of your model.

How To Check Tesla Batterys Degradation

  • Charge the cars battery to 100 percent capacity.
  • Turn on the vehicle. Find the cars estimated range. You can locate this on Model S and Model X in the bottom left corner of the instrument cluster.
  • Divide that by the original battery range and multiply by 100 to determine how much capacity is available.

However, if the battery pack gets damaged while on the road, you will more than likely be on the hook for the repair.

If you want to keep your Tesla Model 3 as safe as possible, youll want to avoid all debris on the road. Since sharp objects can potentially puncture the battery pack, it is worth keeping that in mind. From there, there isnt much else you can do. If you find yourself in a situation like this owner, you can lean on your insurance to cover the repairs.

How Many Batteries Are In A Tesla

Since 2013, Tesla has used 18650 cells manufactured in Asia by Panasonic in its S and X model cars. Tesla battery packs with 18650 Panasonic batteries can charge in 20-40 minutes, depending on usage. It is, however, the fastest any battery pack can charge. The most popular Tesla battery pack has nearly 7,104 18650 cells divided into 16 444 cell modules. The 18650 batteries can store around 85 kWh of energy.

Recently, Tesla engineers reconfigured the battery structure of the pack to hold 516 cells in each module for a total of 8,256 cells. This restructured battery pack can hold slightly more than 100 kWh of energy, driving up to a 300-mile range.

How Do Tesla Battery Packs Die

A Tesla battery pack can fail due to fuse problems, voltage problems, or other minor issues. The entire battery pack gets affected if the issue happens within a single battery module. The voltage across all battery modules needs to be steady. If the voltage values differ across modules, the entire battery pack will get defective. Get your car to the company if this happens. Instead of replacing a module, they will install a new or refurbished battery pack on your car. They will send the damaged one to their battery plants for repair and refurbishing.

What Is The Price Range For Used Teslas

TESLA MODEL 3 Battery 1129182

The cost of any used car is predicated on the model year, the car’s condition and options, and the vehicle’s mileage. Teslas are no different. Older, moderate mileage Tesla Model S vehicles can be acquired for between $24,000 and $40,000.

A 2- or 3-year old Tesla Model S is often in the $40,000 to $60,000 range. A 3-year old Tesla Model X is often in the $50,000 to $60,000 range. Newer Model X vehicles can be acquired in the $65,000 to $90,000 range. A used Tesla Model 3 can be purchased in the 36,000 to 47,000 range.

How Do I Replace The Battery In My Tesla

A confident do-it-your-selfer can replace a vehicle battery. Start by checking your vehicle owners manual for the batterys proper size and location. Find the positive and negative posts. The positive post will have a red plastic cover over it. Look for a + sign stamped onto the battery or printed on a nearby label. Loosen the negative terminal bolt and remove the cable. Be sure not to touch the positive post. Once you loosen the bolt, use a terminal puller to remove the cable. Repeat the sequence with the positive post.

Now remove the clamp or retaining system that keeps the battery in place. Carefully lift out the old battery. Look for any corrosion on the cables and remove it with a wire brush or terminal cleaning tool.

Drop in the new battery so that the positive post lines up with the red cable. Secure it with the battery retaining clamp that you removed earlier. If the battery has anti-corrosion washers, put them in place now and use a thin layer of anti-corrosion grease to prevent buildup. Tighten the positive cable and then do it all over again with the negative black cable.

Make sure the battery is secure and congratulations: youve replaced your cars battery!
